LC-M Bears win District 22-4A championship Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader VIDOR — Simply amazing. Those words came out quite easily for Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears Coach Steve Griffith’s mouth Friday night after catcher Jake Rowell put on a show and the Bears won the District 22-4A championship. The Bears finished off the Vidor Pirates early Friday night with a 10-0 five inning pounding to give LC-M a 12-2 mark in the district standings, one game ahead of the Port Neches-Groves Indians. The Bears end the regular season 25-4. The Pirates (20-7, 9-5) are now tied with Nederland for third place in the district. Vidor and Nederland will decide the final playoff spot at 1 p.m. Saturday at Nederland’s Metreyeon-Delahoussaye Field. “I am glad the way it turned out and I could not be more proud of a team,†Griffith said. “When we started this thing we just wanted to get in (the playoffs). Nobody ever remembers what you finish in district, just how far you go. Our next goal is to play as far as we can.†Rowell finished off an impressive district season with an incredible hitting display on Friday with two home runs and six RBI. The senior catcher was 3-for-4 at the plate with three runs and a walk. He struck out just once in the 14 district games in 2007 and hit well over the .600 mark. Rowell was not the only hero on Friday as sophomore starting pitcher Dallas Brown allowed just one hit to the Pirates. Brown hurled all five innings and gave up no runs on one hit with five strike outs and no walks. “It feels great to win this district,†Brown said. “Having a great defense behind you makes your pitching job a lot easier. I was never paying attention to the one-hitter. I just was throwing and letting the guys make the plays. Then when you have an offense like ours my job is to let their people hit and let the defense go to work.†After leading 1-0 heading into the top of the third, the Bears bats went to work as Tim Barry led the inning off with a triple to the center field fence. Rowell then stepped into the batter’s box and took a 0-2 offering from Vidor starter Trae Hester past the right field fence making it 3-0. Chad Richard then ripped a double to center field and Stefan Cloeren was then able to move Richard to third with a sacrifice bunt. With two down, Adam Leggett got a RBI single to left making it 4-0 after the top half of the third. Kris Hearn, who was 2-for-4, scored the game’s first run after leading off with a hard double to center. He was moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and Rowell got his first RBI with a single to right. The Bears’ offense was not nearly done. With two down in the top of the fourth Barry and Rowell drew back-to-back walks. Phillip Richard came in to run for Rowell and Barry had moved to second on a stolen base and moved to third during Rowell’s at bat on a wild pitch. Both Barry and Richard made quick trips around the bases as Cloeren blasted a 0-2 offering from new Vidor pitcher Jay Nixon four a double to left. Barry and Richard’s runs made it 6-0 Bears. Then in the top of the fifth the Bears decided five innings would be enough to prove once and for all the belonged in the playoffs as district champions. Leggett, who was 2-for-3, led the top of the fifth off with a deep homer to center field giving the Bears a 7-0 lead. Vidor then was able to get two quick outs and the game looked like it would go on a little longer. Once again someone forgot to tell the Bears. Hearn singled to center and moved to second on a passed ball before Barry walked. This is when Rowell solidified his case as the District 22-4A Most Valuable Player of the Year. Rowell battled to a full count on Nixon and then fouled off two more pitchers. The eighth pitch of the at bat was blasted into right field over the Vidor score board giving the Bears the 10-0 lead. “It feels so great to win this thing especially back-to-back,†Rowell said. “We came out and proved everyone wrong. They (the younger Bear players) worked harder than any team I have ever seen. It is phenomenal. Dallas Brown is another hard worker and tonight he pitched his heart out. We proved tonight we are going to be a force to be reckoned with.†Griffith admitted his team skipped a lot of running and weight lifting this season to work on the baseball aspect of the game. “We did a lot of work on the baseball side,†Griffith said. “Next year they will not be so lucky. We lost Dallas for three weeks and he has come back strong. I am so proud of what he has done. Then it was a story book ending to the district career of Jake Rowell. What he did tonight was amazing.†-
Diamond success caps big season for Shark athletes Dave Rogers’ column for Thursday, April 26 The Port Arthur News They don’t hold ticker tape parades in Sabine Pass, but there’s plenty of excitement for folks in the fishing community about their high school’s baseball and softball teams qualifying for the state playoffs. Coach Johnny Vines’ baseball team punched its ticket to the playoffs Tuesday when it wrapped up a third-place finish in District 25-A. Coach Tracie Billeaud’s softball team assured its second-place district finish a week ago. It’s the first-ever playoff trip for the softball program, which just began playing in the UIL in 2004. The baseball program, which was discontinued for a while, hasn’t been to the playoffs since 1986, when the Sharks won the District 24-A championship. “It’s a great feeling for our kids to have success,†Sabine Pass principal Kristi Heid said Wednesday. “They’ve had some tough knocks the last year and a half with Hurricane Rita and trying to recover. Success is always good for student morale.†The softball team carries an 11-4 record into a Class A bidistrict matchup with Bremond Friday at 7 p.m. at Willis High School. “They’re on edge a little bit right now because they’re going into something they haven’t experienced before and they don’t know what to expect,†Billeaud, a first-year coach, said of her Lady Sharks. “But I’m certain they’ll put it all together when the time comes.†Vines, also in his first year at Sabine Pass after coaching Deweyville’s nine to three district titles and four playoff berths in five years, says his 11-6 team could be in for a rough playoff initiation in its bidistrict matchup next week against District 26-A’s runnerup squad. Going into Friday’s final 26-A games, the possibility existed for a three-way tie for first which would be decided, Vines said Wednesday, by a coin flip. That means the Sharks could be paired against defending Class A state champ Anderson-Shiro and its returning player of the year, junior pitcher Tim Harris. Regardless of how things turn out, getting into the postseason is a big accomplishment and will wrap up a big year for the school. In the fall, Sabine Pass competed in UIL football competition for the first time in two decades and remained in the playoff hunt until the final game of the season. This spring, Shark athletes qualified for regional competition in tennis, golf and track. “When you look at those teams, you look at young teams,†Heid said, referring to the diamond squads. “Both the baseball and softball teams are young. “We’re looking at the next few years being successful for our students in all sports. One of the things that have helped put us in the successful mode is we didn’t have middle school programs before and now we do

South Oak Cliff coach left two players in Austin S. Oak Cliff coach left two players in Austin They ignored his orders after game; he's disciplined 08:26 PM CDT on Friday, April 27, 2007 By DAMON L. SAYLES / The Dallas Morning News [email protected] South Oak Cliff boys basketball coach James Mays II was disciplined recently after he left two of his players in Austin after the UIL state tournament in March, school and district administrators said. Seniors Michael Berry, 18, and Cornelius Dawson were told to arrange for their own transportation back to Dallas after disobeying an order from Mr. Mays to remain at the team's hotel after the Class 4A state title game on March 10. The rest of the team returned by bus on March 11. "About 5:30 or 6 [a.m.], we got a wake-up call, and Coach Mays knocked on everybody's doors to get everybody up," Michael said. "He came in the room and told us to call our mothers to pick us up. Then he walked out. The rest of the team left." Reba Berry, Michael's mother, attended the game in Austin but returned to Dallas on Saturday night. She said she didn't learn that her son wasn't on the team bus until her daughter, Tameika, called her Sunday. Michael said he called his sister about the situation early Sunday morning. One of Michael's former coaches, who was in Austin for the tournament, drove the players home. Mr. Mays, who's won three state titles in eight seasons at South Oak Cliff, said he considered the incident resolved and referred inquiries to Dallas ISD athletic director Jeff Johnson. Michael, who played at Lincoln as a freshman and at Seagoville as a sophomore and junior, scored 15 points in the championship game. Michael said he and Cornelius, instead of remaining at the hotel as Mr. Mays instructed on Saturday evening, ventured to Austin's Sixth Street district hours after South Oak Cliff won its third consecutive state title. Michael said he received a text message from Mr. Mays around midnight to return to the hotel in 10 minutes or face further consequences but said he and Cornelius stayed out until roughly 4:30 a.m. Mr. Johnson and SOC athletic director Barbara Brown-McCoy said Mr. Mays was disciplined for the incident. Mr. Mays, Mr. Johnson, Ms. Brown-McCoy and SOC Principal Regina Jones declined to elaborate. "This was a personnel issue," Mr. Johnson said. "Everything has been handled accordingly. "We had our concerns and did our investigations, and now it's done." In addition, Michael and Cornelius were given in-school suspensions. Cornelius didn't return repeated phone messages for comment. Reba Berry said she spoke with Ms. Jones on March 23 and met with Area 5 Superintendent Vickie Mitchell on March 27. Ms. Mitchell assured her that Mr. Mays had been disciplined. Mr. Mays said he doesn't have a problem with any of his players and is helping Michael and Cornelius obtain college scholarships. Both players are unsigned but were vital to SOC's state title run. "I love all my players, them included, and I'm happy that they were able to take part in everything we did this year," Mr. Mays said. "I want all of my players to look back one day and say that they were a part of something special."
