  4. Orioles awarded a run .......... three innings after the fact !! I've NEVER seen this before: Baltimore Orioles 7 Cleveland Indians 4 April 28, 2007 CLEVELAND (AP) -- Score it: E-umpires. Veteran umpire Ed Montague took the blame for a run being added to Baltimore's total three innings after it appeared to be waved off in the Orioles' 7-4 victory over Cleveland on Saturday night. The Indians played the game under protest after Montague, the crew chief, called the official scorer in the bottom of the sixth to add the third-inning run which scored on a sacrifice fly. "There's going to be a tremendous follow up with this and we'll see if we can get it figured out," Cleveland manager Eric Wedge said. The bizarre sequence started with Baltimore leading 2-1 in the top of the third. Nick Markakis was on third base and Miguel Tejada on first with one out when Ramon Hernandez hit a line drive to center field. Indians outfielder Grady Sizemore made a diving catch. Markakis tagged up, headed for home and appeared to cross the plate before Tejada doubled off first. Plate umpire Marvin Hudson waved off the run. Orioles bench coach Tom Trebelhorn disputed Hudson's call before the start of the fourth, and Hudson then conferred with Montague and the other umpires. "We kicked it around and now I'm having a brain cramp on it," Montague said. "So I sent Bill (umpire Bill Miller) in, I said 'You know what, cause we're debating, you go in. Lets make it 100 percent sure."' Miller checked the rule and said the run should have counted. Montague was vague about why it took until the sixth to make the change, saying "it kind of went on" with the umpires conferring with the managers. "It was my screw up and we can't go off of umpire's error," he said. "What's right is right. We have to score the run." Montague said he couldn't remember anything like it happening and didn't blame Wedge for his protest, which will be decided by commissioner Bud Selig's office. If the protest is successful, the Indians and the Orioles could have to replay part of the game. It was unclear whether it would resume in the third or the sixth. Wedge protested the game because the change was not made immediately. "I know the umpires have a tough job to do, but there is a process and there are rules," he said. "When the next pitch is thrown, that's it. The fact is the home plate umpire waved it off. I've never seen runs put on the board three or four innings later." Baltimore manager Sam Perlozzo said Trebelhorn alerted him that the run should count. "I told Sammy it's never too late," Trebelhorn said. "That's our run. I've seen runs put on the board after the game." Corey Patterson and Ramon Hernandez both had two-run doubles to help the Orioles snap a five-game losing streak and end the Indians' winning streak at six. The Indians took a 4-3 lead in the sixth on Jhonny Peralta's two-run homer, but Baltimore scored twice in the eighth. Tejada started the rally with a single off Fernando Cabrera (1-1). Jay Payton singled with one out before a groundout moved the runners to second and third. Patterson doubled to right on an 0-2 pitch from Aaron Fultz. Jamie Walker (1-0) pitched one-third of an inning for the win. Chris Ray worked the ninth for his seventh save.

  6. LC-M’s Bean superior again Tom Halliburton The Orange Leader HUNTSVILLE — Little Cypress-Mauriceville senior Drew Bean made it comfortable enough in the final lap, coasting to double gold medals Friday and Saturday at the Class 4A regional track and field championships. After setting a new Region III mark in the boys 4A 3,200-meter run on Friday night with a time of 9:23.44, the determined LC-M standout simply followed it up by producing his season-best outing in mid-afternoon on Saturday with a 1,600-meter run time of 4:20.39. The winning time easily outdistanced Chase Rathke of Katy Seven Lakes in second place at 4:25.57. Bean's previous season-best had been 4:22.56 Another season-best and another regional gold medal from the Golden Triangle was produced in Friday's mid-afternoon hot sun as Vidor sophomore Jared Parker cleared the bar with a personal best 14-9 to win the boys pole vault. Beaumont Ozen freshman A'Lexus Brannon continued to impress, bringing home three regional gold medals. Brannon won the long jump in 18-10.75, the triple jump in 38-2 and the 100-meter hurdles in 14.44. Brannon already owned the Golden Triangle-area lead with better performances in two of those three events. She established a new Golden Triangle season best in the long jump by going 18-10.75. Brannon was the lone Beaumont winner but not the only Ozen athlete to become a state qualifier. Lady Panthers sophomore Sojourner Brown was a close second in the 800 meters with a time of 2:18.28. The area leader in that event, Sojourner's previous season-best time had been 2:25.58. The lone BISD state qualifier was in the 4A boys ranks was Ozen sprinter Damien Celestine, a silver medalist in the 200 meters with a time of 21.58. Celestine had clocked a 21.18 earlier this season. Ozen also sported two bronze medalists — Tiara Robinson in the girls long jump (17-5.5) and Jarrade Lee in the boys discus (162-11). LC-M junior Phillip Richard eqauled a season-best 6-4 in the high jump to tie for fourth place. The closest brush with a state meet berth for the Nederland Bulldogs occurred in the boys 800-meter run where senior Philip Rogers missed a state trip by less than a second. Rogers duplicated his season-best with a third-place time of 1:57.94. Brenham's Justin Preuss won the race in 1:57.36, followed by Houston Yates' Joseph Anderson in 1:57.87. One of the more pleasing Nederland developments came from encouraging sophomore Justin Krautz who finished fifth in the 400 meters with a time of 50.65. Nederland senior Chelsea Yaws ended a very impressive high school career with a fifth-place finish in the 3,200 meters and a season-best time of 12:12.54 on Friday evening. Yaws bounced back and also delivered a season-best in Saturday's afternoon heat but she finished sixth in the 1,600 meters with a time of 5:32.00. The two hurdles races had to be a disappointing conclusion for Nederland senior Brock Walker who had expected to advance into the state meet. The Golden Triangle area leader in both events, Walker ran a 15.01 in the 110-meter hurdles and a 40.89 in the 300-meter hurdles. Both times were seventh-place finishes and not near his season-best clockings of 14.00 in the 110s and 39.53 in the 300s. Walker ran slightly faster times at Bowers Stadium in Friday night's prelims, going 14.83 in the highs and 39.69 in the intermediates. The Nederland girls also showed fine marks in two events. Ashley Washburn recorded her season-best with a sixth-place time of 2:25.06 in the 800 meters. Savannah Desmarais was seventh in the triple jump with a hop, step and a jump of 34-10.5 While the 4A regional was held at Sam Houston State's Bowers Stadium once again, the Huntsville campus also hosted the 1A regional meet which previously had been held in Nacogdoches. Sabine Pass did not qualify any contestant for the 1A state meet but the Sharks did succeed in bringing home one medal in the girls division. High jumper Tabitha McCray cleared 5-0 and captured the bronze medal by having having fewer misses in her tie for third place. Sabine Pass sprinter Aaron Clark finished fifth in the 100-meter dash with an 11.54 in Friday night's qualifying race.

  8. WO-S wins region meet By JOHNNIE WALTERS, The Enterprise 04/29/2007 Updated 04/28/2007 11:19:06 PM CDT Email to a friendPrinter-friendly HUMBLE - The West Orange-Stark boys track team was tired and exhausted by the time they headed to the middle of the field Saturday evening. Advertisement But it didn't seem to put a damper on the Mustangs celebration at Humble's Turner Stadium. The Mustangs had enough energy to crowd the top of the podium and flash big smiles and make No. 1 hand gestures. Some even jogged around the podium to celebrate. For the first time in school history, the Mustangs won the Class 3A, Region III title. "I am very proud of the way everyone on the team performed at this meet," said WO-S coach Toby Foreman. "It's the first time since we have been in 3A that we won a regional title." WO-S won the regional title with a total of 56 points. Wharton finished in second place with 46 points while West Columbia was third with 42. "It's kind of crazy that we won the regional title because we finished in third place at the district (21-3A) meet," said Foreman. "But I knew that we were going to win the title after we qualified our 800 relay for the state meet." The Mustangs were able to win the title with strong performances in the 400- and 800-meter relays, 200 meters and long jump. Dominique Rhodes, Jacoby Franks, Josh Gloston and Earl Thomas came across the finish line in 41.59 seconds to win the 400 relay. Palestine finished in second place to qualify for state in 41.98. "We ran our personal best at this meet," said Rhodes. "Everything just came together for us today. The weather was nice, and we had good hand offs. We just did what we had to do to win." Rhodes, Gloston, Franks and Thomas finished in second place in the 800 relay with a time of 1:27.39. Palestine won the event in 1:26.85. "I think we picked a good time to run our best time of the year," Franks said. "We were able to do it twice in one day. We were able to make it happen because we had good exchanges in both races." Thomas finished in second place in the long jump with a leap of 23-5 1/4 to advance to Austin. He missed a chance to compete in the 200 meters with a third-place finish in 22.08. But Thomas' finish in the 200 meters was good enough to clinch the regional title for the Mustangs. "We pretty much turned this track meet into the Mustang relays," Foreman said. "We pretty much dominated the two relays. The kids really gave their maximum effort today." Silsbee's Donovan Harris will also represent Southeast Texas at state. He won the 110 hurdles in 14.50. Harris, who has won the District 21-3A title for the last three years, will make his first appear-ance at state. Harris is the only member of his team to qualify for the state meet. "I am very excited about going to state," Harris said. "I put my all into it today and I am very happy with my performance. It's a lot of pressure to be the only member of my team to go to state, but I be-lieve I will represent the team well in Austin. I hope to win the state title."
