Saw this article on Middlebrooks on a Tyler site. Will Middlebrooks Just got the new Baseball America mag and it has Will as the #36 overall prospect for the upcoming draft. The scouting report is as follows: "Kevin Ahrens isn't the only blue-chip third base recruit Texas A&M could lose to the draft. Where Ahrens gets compared with Chipper Jones, the more athletic Middlebrooks draws Cal Ripken Jr. and Scott Rolen comparisons. Selected to play in a Texas high school football all-star game, Middlebrooks drew college interest as a quarterback and punter. He's also a 6-foot-4, 215 pound righthander with a low-90s fastball and an occasional plus curveball. But his future is at the hot corner. He's not quite as polished a hitter as Ahrens, but he's not far off and his size gives him leverage that will produce power. He's an athletic third baseman with good range and a strong arm, and he runs exceptionally well for his size. Middlebrooks is a consensus supplemental first-rounder, but he could sneak into the first round with the right club." -

LC-M grad Rowell excited about All-Star Game Van Wade The Orange Leader LITTLE CYPRESS — He may have received his diploma already, but Little Cypress-Mauriceville catcher Jake Rowell will get one last chance to represent the Bears and long-time head coach Steve Griffith one more time. Rowell, the District 22-4A Most Valuable Player on the Coaches All-District Team, was selected to play for the South squad in the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association Class 4A-5A All-Star Game June 16 at Dell Diamond in Round Rock. “It’s such a huge honor,†said Rowell, who signed to play college baseball for McNeese State University. “I was real fortunate to have a good year. Everything really came together well for me.†That would be an understatement for a young man that helped guide a young Bear unit to a surprising 26-7 record and a second straight District 22-4A championship. Rowell was a tremendous defensive catcher in his four-year run a Bear. It’s his bat that really got hot as a senior. After hovering around a solid .300 at the plate as a junior, Rowell made the baseball look like a grapefruit as a senior. He batted a whopping .535 for the season. Even more impressive was his average in 22-4A play, where he batted an amazing .640. He racked up 11 home runs and drove in almost 50. “I knew I could hit better as a senior but I didn’t realize I was going to have a ‘light it up’ type of season,†Rowell said. “Coach Griff (Griffith) gave me the green light and was fortunate enough to have a lot of great teammates get on base.†Rowell will become the sixth Bear to participate in the annual All-Star encounter. The other five Bears include Mike Perkins (1982), Charlie Nichols (1996), Beau Hale (1997), Knox McCorquodale (2003) and Adam Jaynes (2005). “It’s an awesome feeling to be along the side of those guys,†Rowell said. “It’s been great to be a part of a program that has such a rich tradition. I don’t think I’ll be the last one to play in it. There was so much young talent on our team this year and any of those guys coming back can do the same. Plus, there are some even younger guys coming up that are excellent players.†Rowell will be the only Southeast Texas player playing in the 4A-5A All-Star Game. However, three local players will participate in the Class A-3A All-Star tilt at Dell Diamond. Bridge City senior outfielder Johnny Dishon, who signed to play college baseball at Louisiana State University, along with Silsbee outfielder Rocky Calhoun and Woodville shortstop Braden Riley will compete in the elite game. Dishon and Riley are still in the playoffs, trying to help their squads punch a State Tournament ticket. Dishon and the Cardinals will take on fellow District 21-3A rival and district champion Jasper in a best-of-three Class 3A Region III Finals series at Lamar University’s Vincent-Beck Stadium. Game One is Thursday at 7 p.m. Game Two is Friday at 7 p.m. Game Three, if necessary, is at 4 p.m. Saturday. Riley and Woodville will face Hooks, which ousted District 24-2A champion Buna in two games in the regional semifinals, in a best-of-three series in the Class 2A Region III Finals. All three games will be played at the University of Texas at Tyler. Game One is Thursday at 7:30 p.m. Game Two is Saturday at 3 p.m. with Game Three, if necessary, will follow 30 minutes after Game Two. In Class 4A action, former long-time Bridge City head baseball coach Chuck Young has his Texas City Stingarees in the Region III Finals against a powerful Montgomery unit in a best-of-three series. Game One will be Thursday at 7 p.m. in Texas City. Game Two will be Friday at 7 p.m. in Montgomery. Game Three, if necessary, will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at the University of Houston. The Stingarees, District 23-4A champions, have defeated Huffman (4-0), New Caney (4-1) and McCallum (4-1, 6-4) in the playoffs thus far. -

Lakers owner arrested! Buss also booked for driving with BAC of 0.08 or higher Associated Press CARLSBAD, Calif. -- Los Angeles Lakers owner Jerry Buss was arrested early Tuesday for investigation of driving under the influence of alcohol. The 74-year-old Buss was taken into custody shortly before 1 a.m. after he drove his gold Mercedes-Benz station wagon the wrong way on a street in an unincorporated section of Carlsbad that has double yellow lines, California Highway Patrol officer Tom Kerns said. Although I was driving only a short distance, it was a bad decision and I was wrong to do it. Lakers owner Jerry Buss "Although I was driving only a short distance, it was a bad decision and I was wrong to do it," Buss said in a statement issued by the Lakers. "It was a mistake I will not make again." A 23-year-old woman in the vehicle with Buss wasn't arrested, Kerns said. He said Buss was "relatively cooperative" when placed under arrest and was booked into the Vista jail for investigation of drunken driving and driving with a blood alcohol content of 0.08 or above. Buss was released around 10:30 a.m., according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department Web site. Kerns said the final results of Buss' blood alcohol test won't be available for about three weeks. Highway Patrol officers Sal Gutierrez and Julie Cahill administered field sobriety tests using an alcohol screening device, Kerns said. Lakers spokesman John Black said Buss was in the Carlsbad vicinity because he has a home in north San Diego County. Buss' primary residence is in the Los Angeles suburb of Playa del Rey.

Dallas Morning News: Dirk for Kobe Dump Dirk? For Kobe, Mavs should 10:02 PM CDT on Monday, May 28, 2007 It doesn't matter whether Mark Cuban or Donnie Nelson makes the phone call, but one of them needs to contact Lakers GM Mitch Kupchak today and find out what it takes to get Kobe Bryant. If the answer is Dirk Nowitzki, then so be it. Straight up. No frills. A simple blockbuster. One first-team All-NBA star in his prime for another. Bryant has been dropping subtle hints for a week that he wants out of Los Angeles. Superstars have been dealt before. Wilt Chamberlain was traded. So was Oscar Robertson. And Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Don't forget to add Shaquille O'Neal to the list. So don't act like it's blasphemous to consider trading Nowitzki, the league's MVP. Or have you forgotten Philadelphia dealt former MVP Allen Iverson this season. If you think it's laughable to move Dirk Nowitzki (foreground) for Kobe Bryant, think again. VERNON BRYANT / DMN If you think it's laughable to move Dirk Nowitzki (foreground) for Kobe Bryant, think again. No one said it would be an easy decision. Or a popular decision. Or that Cuban even has the courage to trade his favorite player. But it must be considered. This is not a knee-jerk reaction to Nowitzki's performance in the Mavericks' shocking first-round playoff loss. This is about positioning the Mavericks to win a championship by acquiring a player who embraces pressure and plays best in big games. Besides, I've already made the trade on a Web site that analyzes the feasibility of trades to make sure there wasn't any problem with the salaries. There isn't. Kobe is scheduled to earn a little more than $17 million this season, while Nowitzki is supposed to get about $15 million. According to this Web site, the deal is fine. Just to make sure, I proposed a deal of DeSagana Diop, Greg Buckner and Jason Terry for Bryant and the computer GM promptly rejected it. Over the holiday weekend, an ESPN report quoted Bryant as saying he would consider waiving his no-trade clause unless the Lakers re-hired Jerry West and gave him full control of the organization. As you would expect, he's denying the story. Too late. Bryant is mad at the only franchise he's ever played for because they haven't gotten him enough help to make the Lakers a legitimate contender. And nothing is going to change this off-season because Lamar Odom's shoulder injury means he has little trade value. Neither does Kwame Brown, the only other player on the roster worth more than a Wal-Mart gift card, though his contract expires at the end of next season. It's Bryant's fault he's in this predicament because he's the one who chased off O'Neal, so he could be the focal point of the team. Now that it's not working out, he wants to wear a new uniform next season if he doesn't get what he wants. We all know Cuban has a soft spot for Nowitzki because of the 7-footer's work ethic, talent and ability to lead the Mavericks from the abyss of the '90s. Nowitzki is the most decorated player in franchise history, with a low-maintenance personality to match. Those are just some of the reasons Cuban was so emotional at the news conference to announce that Nowitzki had been named MVP. But he also loves the Mavericks and he'll be doing his club a disservice if he doesn't explore every avenue to make it a better basketball team. You can't convince me adding Bryant doesn't improve the Mavericks. I'll worry about who's playing power forward later. It's not that Nowitzki isn't a great player. Winning the MVP proves that just in case you weren't impressed that he averaged 24.6 points and 8.9 rebounds for a team that won 67 games. But we all know he doesn't always embrace the moment and deliver in the Mavericks' most important games. We all know he has a reputation for being soft, perhaps because he didn't learn the game on inner-city black tops, where you call your own fouls, or spend a summer playing at Rucker Park in New York. He's had huge games in the playoffs before – 37 in Game 7 against San Antonio in 2006 comes to mind as does a 50-point performance against Phoenix – but pro sports is a what-have-you-done-for-me-lately business. Miami's Dwyane Wade outplayed him in the final four games of the 2006 NBA Finals as the Heat rallied from a 2-0 deficit to win the championship. And Nowitzki was tentative and ineffective against Golden State as Dallas became the first No.1 seed to lose a best-of-7 series against a No.8 seed. Bryant has never won an MVP trophy, but he understands how to impose his will on a game. He demands the ball in clutch situations and consistently attacks the bucket. He is the NBA's best player. Others like Nowitzki and Wade are part of the discussion, but we all know Bryant is the NBA's most feared player. He wouldn't go 2-for-13, score eight points and passively hang around the perimeter in the most important game of the season. Bryant's confidence never wanes. Nowitzki, the best European player ever, will be inducted into the Hall of Fame one day. But he lacks the arrogance to lead the Mavericks to a championship. Bryant does not.

Senators' No. 1 line shut out in Stanley Cup opener ANAHEIM, CALIF. — The NHL's highest-scoring line got shut out in the opening game of the Stanley Cup finals. Dany Heatley, Jason Spezza and Daniel Alfredsson managed only two assists between them in Ottawa's 3-2 loss to the Anaheim Ducks on Monday night. Ottawa's goals, both on the power play, were scored by Mike Fisher and Wade Redden, who have a combined seven goals in the playoffs. Game 2 is Wednesday night in Anaheim. The goals were the first for Fisher and Redden since May 12, when each scored against Buffalo in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference finals. The Senators had been idle for eight days since that series ended, but they started quickly enough, scoring first in the opening two periods. Alfredsson and Spezza assisted on Redden's goal to give Ottawa a 2-1 lead in the second. But the Senators' top line didn't convert during a 5-on-3 advantage later in the period. Alfredsson, the team's career leader in playoff goals, assists and points, brought an NHL-leading 10 goals into the finals, including four game-winners. Heatley was a 50-goal scorer in the regular season, and the team leader in playoff points with 21 — one more than Spezza. But was Fisher who scored the game's first goal on a shot that hit the right post and went in with Anaheim's Scott Niedermayer off for high-sticking in the opening minutes. Redden scored during a furious flurry in front of the net in the second. Anaheim goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere lost his stick and instead of sliding it toward Giguere, teammate Chris Pronger flung it. A distracted Giguere saw the stick spinning toward him at the same time as the puck. Ottawa was held to 20 shots.
