  13. BC seeks revenge on Bulldogs By Gabriel Pruett Southeast Texas News Group BRIDGE CITY — Jasper could be the exact opponent Bridge City needed to face in the Class 3A Region III Regional Finals this weekend at Lamar University’s Vincent Beck Stadium. Fresh off a two-game sweep of previously unbeaten Carthage, the Cardinals (27-6-1) meet the Bulldogs (30-6) starting at 7 p.m. Thursday in Game 1. Game 2 is slated for 7 p.m. Friday at LU while Game 3 is at 4 p.m. Saturday. The Bulldogs downed the Cardinals twice this season, 3-2 and 10-8, to take away Bridge City’s District 21-3A title. That gives the Redbirds a lot to play for. “We definitely want a little revenge,†Bridge City senior Phillip Meeks said. “It feels great to get another shot at them because we want to prove we can beat them.†Bridge City center fielder Johnny Dishon agreed with Meeks and is excited about the opportunity of taking out Jasper to reach the state tournament in Austin. “It’s nice to have played them before because we know we can play with those guys,†Dishon said. “In the first two games our defense was not in too good of shape. It has become a lot better through the playoffs, because we have been working hard and we are becoming closer as a team.†Bridge City’s path through the playoffs has seen some battles along the way which have made the Cardinals very battle-tested. The Cardinals first took out Splendora 6-0 in the bi-district round before knocking out Wharton 4-0, 3-5 and 9-2. Bridge City then ousted Needville 3-4, 8-5 and 6-3 in the regional quarterfinals before beating up on Carthage 6-2 and 4-2 in the regional semi-finals. Jasper’s road started in the area round with a 3-0 and 5-3 two-game sweep of La Grange. Jasper then took out Bellville 14-11 and 7-3 in the regional quarterfinals before ousting Lufkin Hudson 3-1 and 18-1 in the regional semi-finals to set up the all-District 21-3A regional final. “We want to show we are a better team than we were before,†Dishon added. “We have gotten better but so have they. The main thing we have to have happen is no errors, none whatsoever.†Meeks said the Cardinals are not sporting big-heads after handing the Carthage Bulldogs their first losses of the season. “We were confident even before Carthage,†Meeks added. “We knew that series would be tough but we all worked hard and went out and earned it. We were No. 1 last year and went out and got beat. It is good our opponent this week is Jasper. That gives us something to play for because they took our district title. “We have to maintain our pitching and not walk any of their batters. Then our defense and offense has to keep up its intensity levels.†Both Meeks and Dishon expect nice-sized crowds at Vincent Beck to cheer on the Cardinals. “I grew up in Nederland so I am sure there will be some support out there,†Meeks said. “We have all played with a lot of these guys in the area so hopefully they will come out and root for us. I am just glad it is not an hour or two hours away. It starts at Lamar on Thursday and we are not going to stop now.â€

  16. Hernandez named to Southland Conference All-Tournament team Daucy Crizer-Lamar University SID May 29, 2007 - 4:20PM BEAUMONT – After helping Lamar University post a 1-2 record, first baseman Dan Hernandez was named to the 2007 Southland Conference All-Tournament team, in voting by media representatives covering the SLC Tournament at Brown-Stroud Field in Natchitoches, La. A senior from San Carlos, Calif., Hernandez was hampered by injuries for much of the season. He came back to give the Cardinals a big lift in the final series of the regular season, helping Lamar take two of three from McNeese State to win the SLC East Division title. Hernandez hit .455 (5-for-11) with two runs scored, a double, a home run and five RBI at the SLC Tournament. He went 3-for-4 with a run scored in Lamar’s 12-2 win over McNeese State. He went 1-for-3 with a double and two RBI in a 7-3 loss to eventual SLC Tournament champion Sam Houston State. He was 1-for-4 with a 3-run home run that pulled the Cardinals within a run in a 7-6 loss to Texas-San Antonio. For the season, Hernandez hit .315 with 17 run scored, 12 doubles, four home runs and 22 RBI. For his two-year career, Hernandez hit .335 with 62 runs scored, 21 doubles, 13 home runs and 64 RBI. Senior outfielder Erik Kanaby also wrapped up his Lamar career in Friday’s loss to UTSA. Kanaby led the team with a .406 batting average, which ranks as the second-best single-season average in school history behind Jordan Foster’s .417 in 2003. His 91 hits also rank second in school history behind Foster’s 96 in 2003. He led the team with 62 run scored, which is tied for the second-most in a single-season behind Blake Justice’s 66 in 2002. His career batting average of .381 ranks as the best in school history. Juniors Michael Ambort and Collin DeLome are expected to be taken early in the 2007 Major League Baseball First-Year player draft next week and have likely played their final games for the Cardinals. Ambort, a native of Rockville Centre, N.Y., finished his career as the school’s all-time home run leader with 38 and his 173 career RBIs ranks second only to Kim Christensen’s 190. He posted a .329 average with 140 runs scored and 51 doubles, which ranks fifth all-time. He was named SLC hitter of the year in 2005, when he also earned American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) second-team and Baseball America third-team All-America honors. “I have no regrets about coming down to Lamar University to play baseball,†said Ambort. “Lamar has been a great experience for me. I have made a lot of good friends and I plan to stay in touch with all of them. Plus, I got a great education.†DeLome, a Buna native, also ranks among the all-time leader in several statistical categories, including the school’s career triples leader with 22. His .340 career batting average ranks seventh, his 220 hits rank sixth and his 150 RBIs ranks eighth.
