  1. [Hidden Content] High school football player burned while siphoning gas 11:22 AM CDT on Sunday, October 7, 2007 Associated Press MESA, Ariz. – A high school football player from Chandler suffered third-degree burns on 30 percent of his body after he tried to siphon gas from an inoperable car, according to the boy's coach. Chandler High School football coach Jim Ewan said Dion Jordan and his friends were trying to remove the gas Saturday to put into a vehicle that was working. But a fire ignited and burned Jordan up and down both arms and shoulders and from his knees to his toes. He was rushed to the burn unit at Maricopa County hospital in Phoenix. Chandler athletic director Dave Shapiro said Jordan likely will be hospitalized at least a month for skin grafts and related care for the burns. Ewan said Jordan was in good spirits, and his aunt, Yative Tiger, told Ewan her nephew was able to move fingers and toes. Jordan is a standout receiver and defensive end who has been recruited by Stanford, Nebraska and Southern California, among others.

  6. Report: Steinbrenner says Torre's job on the line against Indians As the Yankees stand on the brink of elimination in the first round of the playoffs for the third season in a row, owner George Steinbrenner says longtime manager Joe Torre needs his team to advance to the ALCS if he wants to keep managing the club. "His job is on the line," Steinbrenner told The Bergen Record. "I think we're paying him a lot of money. He's the highest-paid manager in baseball, so I don't think we'd take him back if we don't win this series." Torre makes $7 million a season and is in the final year of his contract. Teams Up 2-0 in Best-of-5 Series Won in 3 games 34 4 games 8 5 games 3 Lost in 5 games 7 The Cleveland Indians lead the Yankees 2-0 in their American League Division Series. In Sunday's Game 3 at Yankee Stadium, Roger Clemens will take the mound for New York while Jake Westbrook will start for Cleveland. Torre was hired before the 1996 season and led the Yankees to four World Series in his first five seasons but none since. New York last reached the World Series in 2003, wasted a 3-0 lead to Boston in the 2004 ALCS, then was eliminated by the Angels and Detroit in the first round the last two years. During his 12 years leading the Yankees, Torre has taken the Bronx Bombers to 12 consecutive playoff appearances. "He's been good for us over the years," Steinbrenner acknowledged to the paper. Steinbrenner also had some choice words about retiring veteran umpire Bruce Froemming and his decision to play through the late-game bug infestation during Friday's Game 2 extra-inning victory for the Indians. "The umpire was full of [expletive]," Steinbrenner told the paper. "He won't umpire our games anymore." The wide-ranging interview with The Bergen Record also touched on Alex Rodriguez's future and Steinbrenner's health. "I think we'll re-sign him," Steinbrenner said of A-Rod. "I think he's going to have a good run the rest of the [postseason]. I think he realizes New York is the place to be, the place to play. A lot of this [postseason] is laying on his shoulders, you know, but I think he's up to it." The 77-year-old owner, who told the paper he maintains full control over the Yankees, downplayed reports of his ill health. "I'm doing all right," he told The Record. "I'm fine." The Associated Press contributed to this report.

  10. West Brook wins but might lose star running back HUMBLE - Coasting to an easy victory, the West Brook football team may have suffered a major blow Saturday. Advertisement Click here to go to JK Chevrolet Standout running back Albert Williams Jr. was helped off the field with what at least one coach feared might be a serious right knee ligament injury in the final minutes of West Brook's 56-14 knockout of Kingwood in Turner Stadium. West Brook athletic trainer Chip Whiteside declined to comment on the seriousness of the injury. He added that Williams' knee will be examined Monday. "When I saw he was hurt, my first thought was I can't do it without him," said junior running back Christine Michael, who shares the rushing workload with Williams, a senior. "He's like a big brother to me on the field." Williams and Michael each rushed for more than 100 yards against Kingwood. Williams scored the team's first touchdown, and Michael reached the end zone four times, three times rushing and once on a 19-yard screen pass. Williams rushed 21 times for 129 yards. His last carry was for 3 yards late in the fourth quarter, and the injury occurred one play later, on a keeper by quarterback Christian Louis. After Williams was helped to the sideline, Whiteside tended to him while he lay on a track surrounding the artificial-surface field, slick from rain showers in the second half. "He didn't get hit," West Brook coach Craig Stump said. "He wasn't even carrying the ball. He just kind of stopped, and his leg kind of slipped." Michael carried the ball on the next play and immediately knelt by Williams after leaving the field. Michael said he felt Williams would be OK. "I had to immediately go over there and see what was wrong with him," said Michael, who rushed 16 times for 140 yards. "When I found out he was alright, it kind of cooled me down a little bit. At first, it looked like he was in pain." Senior receiver Joshua Powdrill was among a group of players to surround Williams. "He's a big part of the team," Powdrill said. "He's one of the best leaders we have, so I don't want to see him go out like that. I want to see him succeed, because he wants to go on to college. I want to see him do good, but that happens. We'll see what happens, and I hope he gets better." Offensive lineman Gerald Moulton checked on Williams after post-game handshakes. "I'm worried," said Moulton, a senior. "He is a big part of the team. I just want to check on him and see if he's OK. I hope it's just minor. It would be bad for him to end his senior year like this." Williams and Michael are the only two West Brook backs to carry the ball this season. Williams has 467 rushing yards, and Michael has 400. Also for West Brook (4-1 overall, 2-0 District 21-5A), Jordan Garrett returned a fumble 43 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter and Louis rushed for two touchdowns in the fourth. Kingwood (0-5, 0-2) was limited to five first downs. West Brook plays Friday against Baytown Lee (3-2, 2-0), predicted in a preseason poll of coaches to win District 21-5A. Michael said he's ready to enter the game without Williams, his tag-team partner. "I'll have to do it for him," Michael said. "I'll carry him on my back as if he's in the game with me. I'll have to grind it out and fight for him."
  11. Texas is big, your right. If WOS can get by Giddings and Liberty Hill there're in the Big Dance. Cuero (3A) nearly beat Liberty Hill and Bay City beat Cuero, so i think WOS has a shot along with Newton. Nederland could go far as well.
