Friendswood tops Lake Creek, 4-1, in region finals opener Ted Dunnam, Staff writer Friendswood moved within one victory of a Class 5A state baseball tournament berth with a 4-1 victory over Lake Creek Wednesday night at Reckling Park. The triumph, the 10th consecutive for the Mustangs, gives them a 1-0 lead in the Region 3-5A best-of-three championship series. Friendswood (28-7) scored four runs in the fourth inning to overcome an early 1-0 deficit, and Mustang pitcher Jacob Rogers was dominant over the final six innings in earning the complete game win. Rogers struck out five and allowed just four hits in silencing the Lion bats while Dane Perry had two of Friendswood’s five hits. The Mustangs fueled the decisive inning with three consecutive two-out walks to Collin Goolsby, Ayden Pearcy and Tatum Black. The third base-on-balls of the inning, issued to Black, brought home Perry, who had singled, to knot the game at 1-1. Goolsby then scored on a balk and Kyle Lockhart followed with an RBI-single for a 3-1 score. Black then came home on a wild pitch to produce the 4-1 lead. Lake Creek (28-6) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first after Jaron Lyness walked, Ethan Davis singled and a passed ball put runners at second and third. Samson Pugh then delivered a sacrifice fly to right field.

Not sure the total years Wiggins has teaching for retirement but he has 17 years as Crosby Head Baseball coach. He might want a change of scenery, better paying job, maybe some one higher up did not want him at Crosby anymore or it could be a mutual decision on both sides to move on???

Calallen’s Steve Chapman Becomes Texas All-Team Leader in Baseball Coaching Wins Calallen’s Tress Vasquez hit an RBI triple in the top of the 7th of Game 3 to give Calallen a 2-1 lead and Brayden Sprencel shut down Boerne in the bottom of the 7th to give Calallen the victory and a rematch with Sinton in this year’s Region IV Finals. The win also gave Calallen Head Baseball Coach Steve Chapman his 1,116 win making Chapman the winningest high school baseball coach in Texas history. Chapman’s win eclipsed the 1,115 wins held by Bobby Moegle of Lubbock Monterey. Moegle held that spot for almost 30 years. Moegle coached from 1960-1999, all at Lubbock Monterey. He took his teams to the state tournament 13 times, winning the state championship in ’72, ’74, ’81 and ’96. Coach Chapman got his first and only head coaching stint at Calallen in 1983 and is in his 40th year there. Chapman’s Calallen teams have won 3 State Championships (2000, 2005, 2008) and have been to the State Tournament 12 times. Calallen has been to the playoffs 31 straight seasons. They have been to the playoffs 33 of Chapman’s 40 seasons there. They have won or shared 27 District Championships. There were only 20 baseball players in the program when Chapman first came to Calallen in 1983. Now, 75-80 come out to make one of the three teams for the 4A school. Baseball is big in Corpus Christi and the Coastal Bend area and the Calallen program has been well supported by local fans. Robstown and Calallen district matchups have drawn close to 4,000 in attendance over the years. In 2007, Calallen played Corpus Christi Moody in the Area Round of the playoffs at Whataburger Field in Corpus Christi. Attendance was over 8,000 for the first two games of the series and over 9.000 for the Game 3 matchup. Last year’s Regional Final game vs Sinton was scheduled for a one-game playoff at Whataburger Field. With both teams ranked #1 and #2 in the state, a large attendance was expected for the one-game playoff. Rain forced the series to Laredo, a game which Sinton won 2-1 in 8 innings. Chapman’s record-breaking win last Saturday gives Calallen a rematch with Sinton in the 2022 Region IV Finals. Game 1 and Game 3 of the Regional Finals are scheduled at Cabaniss Field and Game 2 will be played at Whataburger Field. by Tim Baugh

Cards Season Ends on Third Day of Tournament James Dixon, Assistant AD/Media Relations The best season for Lamar University baseball since 2013 came to an end Friday afternoon with a 9-4 setback to Abilene Christian at Hohokam Stadium in Mesa, Ariz. The loss puts an end to a year that saw LU post a 37-21 record, and just miss a WAC Divisional title by one game with a 20-10 conference record. Big Red jumped out to a 3-0 lead, but ACU answered with nine-straight runs before the Cardinals could get back on the board. The Cardinals made the most of their four hits scoring four runs with two errors, while ACU plated nine runs on 10 hits with an error. Matthew McDonald, Josh Blankenship, Kirkland Banks and Reese Durand each recorded a hit on the day, with Blankenship and Durand each driving in two. Senior Joe Buckendorff got the start and went 3.1 innings for the Cardinals allowing three earned runs on three hits with four strikes. When Buckendorff exited the game in the fourth inning he left with a one run lead but a four-run fourth and seventh from the Wildcats was too much for the Red and White to overcome. The Cardinals wasted little time Friday getting the scoring started. With two outs and runners at the corner, Blankenship took an 0-2 pitch deep to right center getting it just beyond the outstretched arm of the right fielder. The hit scored both runners as Blankenship went racing into the third with his second triple of the season. Classmate Reese Durand made it a 3-0 lead for the Cardinals in the second inning when he led off the inning with a no doubter to right field for his third blast of the season. ACU managed to get one back in their half of the second inning but the result could've been worse. The Wildcats had the bases loaded with no outs but Buckendorff worked his way out of traffic with two strikeouts. Unfortunately, the Wildcats' lone run of the inning came off one of the strikeouts as the pitch got away from the catcher. The score remained 3-1 until the bottom of the fourth when the Wildcats struck for four runs on three hits and took advantage of an LU error to claim their first lead of the game, 5-3. ACU made it a six-run lead with four more runs in their half of the seventh. The Cardinals managed to get one-run back on a sacrifice fly to score Deric LaMontagne who led off the ninth by reaching on an error and advancing to third on two wild pitches.
