2.
AW heck 4,000 is a small crowd for us, i can hardley wait to see it if we make it to the 3rd and 4th round. I see the defense getting key stops look at how many stops weve had inside the 10 this year esp recently, i just hope we use bertrand more and give the hugo kid a shot again, he tore central up on that last drive. Gohlke is now training my son and hes still aggressive, love it!
Its not the same Gohlke...its dereks older brother Chris....just letting you know
3. Obviously, they assumed by joining Ducks Unlimited that he could poach unlimited ducks.
4. 1.) Lumberton 2.) Nederland 3.) Central 4.) Livingston 5.) Vidor 6.) Port Neches-Groves 7.) Ozen 8.) Little Cypress-Mauriceville
5. Even if we did become a passing team, we don't have the speed to compete with the fast corners and receivers like Central and Ozen have. Call me what you like, my fellow Vidor fans included, but I am a realist. I think we have a potential to make the playoffs and a slim possibility of a district championship down the road. But I don't see us ever in the state championship, as the playoffs are where the faster teams from around the state end up. First off RustedCutlass, I am a realist as well. Vidor will NEVER become a passing team. Vidor does not develop passing QB's at the junior high level and therefore will never have a throwing QB. With the offense that Vidor attempts to run, all of the athletes prefer not to play QB. I can think of only one QB that was developed in the past 8 years. Second, you do not need to have speed to match up against Central, Ozen or any other team. Team speed does not win football games. Next, Vidor possibly will make the playoffs only because there is now four playoff spots. Hell, why don't we just take all the teams from each district and let them all in. The odds are just in their favor compared to three. This rule change was the best thing that could have happened to Mathews. It's a shame that he can win 3-4 games games a year and keep his job. If my productivity level at my job was at 30 to 40 percent, I would be fired. I'm just glad we aren't playing Gulf Shores Academy any longer. Vidor will NEVER win a state championship. Coaching wins championships.
6. Last season, we had some games where we never threw over 5 to 6 times. (Can't say all of them because I couldn't make them all due to my job.) While I would like to see more of an air attack, Mathews is going to stick to a bruising ground game and big guys opening holes. Whoever is placed in the QB slot will probably face the same amount of throws Teinert did. I would say a bigger deal would be if we didn't have a strong tailback coming back in '09. With Pittman back we should be able to function. We have never been a strong passing team so I guess I view it a little differently. For instance, the year that Roman Franklin was the QB/Kicker/Punter/Water Boy/Tackeling Dummy/etc... I would have rather us have snapped it directly to the tailback. (Don't get me wrong, Franklin was a good kid that was tough and durable for a lot of punishment, but he wasn't going to get any second looks as a QB.) As long as whoever comes in to play QB is able to make enough throws to open the running game, then Mathews will stick with the offense he has in place. Stick with the offense Mathews has in place? What offense?
7. Well, if that's the case, it's a good thing the applicant list got released. Now LH will know he is putting his hat in the ring for another job. Just think, if the list had never been released he wouldn't have had a bargaining chip. ;D ;D ;D From what I hear Danaher was the applicant that asked that they try and keep the list from the media. If true then it should say a little about his intentions. As far as Vance and is offense is concerned, PNG has been a run, run, pass, punt offense for so long now, I think alot of people are leary of running even more. I agree you can run to a state title if you are mixing it up and play good defense, but we had that here and it just wasn't getting it. I think we want something a little different. But if they do hire Vance I won't argue with the sucess! Danaher intended to keep it confidential from his athletes. If offered the position, he wanted to break the news to his team, not the local newspaper. His Superintendant was informed of his intentions before he applied. Danaher adapts his offense to the athletes in his program. If talent exists at the QB position he has been know to run a shotgun/spread offense. That's part of the reason his programs have been so successful. Thats all I could ask for is to run what your talent lets you.Let the talent dictate, you can't force the spread if O if you don't have the kids to do it, and same is true for power ground game. I am not hung up like some on throwing because it is different. Just do what works, if its running the ball then go for it and control the clock. Couldn't agree more. I wish Vidor would take note.
8. Well I already moved! So I have the right to bash. I have never bashed the kids once. Kids are going to fumble the ball and throw int's. Also to GO NED's comment about the SUPER BOWL. It's not just Nederland just a team that has kicked Vidor's tail in the past and have a playoff caliber program year in and year out. WO-S had a 4 or 5 game losing streak when playing in Vidor. The problem is people get so pumped up when Vidor plays a big game at home but then when the game is on the road no matter who it is no one shows up to support. Vidor needs a change to spark the interest again in Vidor football. 3-7 or 4-6 isn't cutting it like it use to. The reason it was ok in the eyes of Vidor was because 0-10 and 1-9 wasn't good before. So it's time to move on and make choice. We are almost there but seem to miss out barely the past few years. Lets quit being content with being competitive and make a move towards being an actual playoff program.
9. There is always going to be mistakes. Heck college and NFL players make mistakes constantly but it's coaching that wins games. Coaches have to put their kids in the position to win. Vidor is always trailing in every game. How many times have they had the lead due to 4 quarter heroics by a Pirate? Talent can only carry you so far and we all know this. The coaches have to push the kids to the limit and have discipline with in their team. Plain and simple, this isn't getting done by the Mighty Pirates. It's time for a change. Vidor never knows if Mathews is staying or going. You always hear he wants to go back to BC. Well let him go and we appreciate what he did while he was there. Vidor needed Mathews at the time when he was hired and the kids wanted him. Now it's time for a change. Vidor has suprised the whole district this year but 2-6 isn't it. With LC-M having a great year and Ozen getting some momentum it might be another 2-8 season for Vidor. I'm just glad they aren't playing Gulf Shores anymore just to get an easy win. That was a joke for the whole district and the city of Vidor. How much revenue did those games pull in? Would Hooks, Neuman, or Burnett play Gulf Shores?
10. Vidor could realisticly be 5-3 if not 6-2. So you are saying that it's the kids fault? In high school football it's all about coaching. I believe Vidor has always had talent but the talent level is never pushed to the extreme by the coaching staff. It's funny how Vidor's Junior High team wins every year. The Nederland game was just a great come back by the team, not the coaching. Central was just like the Ozen game last year. Vidor is winning with around a minute left and we run nothing but a prevent defense. Make the other team make a big play. Do not let them scramble for 30 yards. The Lumberton game Vidor fumbles 3 times inside the 20. PNG was horrific. Defense played great but the offense stumbles again until Vidor starts throwing the ball. They could have thrown the ball all night. It's all about coaching. Look at Dan Hooks and Larry Neuman? I guess they both have more talent than Vidor? Those coaches know who to play and where to play them. If I remember correctly the class of 2004 went 29-1 from 7th-9th grade with a last second loss to Ozen. I guess you're right it's not the coaches fault.
11. Mathews has been there long enough and it's time that he says his good-bye. Even though Mathews has always been a great motivator and always has his team believing that they can win. He hasn't been the coach the team needed. He sparked the whole city of Vidor when he became the head coach. This was all due to the support from his players because the school board didn't even want to give him the job. The players he once had do not feel the same about the coach any longer. Many still respect him as a man but not as a coach. I have thought of several reasons for the downfall. 1. Discipline-Where has it gone? I saw a kid throw some equipment on the sideline this past friday night. 8 years ago that would have never happened. Oh but the kid just ran back on to the field when it happened. Maines gets much respect because he has that fire and jumped all over that kid when he returned. Mathews needs to quit being the players buddy and start being a coach. 2. Coaches-Now not all of the assistant coaches have been horrible. Many were great but they are all gone. Though it's great to hire your friends but when the ship is going in the wrong direction you need to let go of wheel and jump overboard. Mathews stuck with his coaches/friends too long. In the end they all left and took other positions at other schools leaving him steering the burning vessel. 3. Motivator-Mathews are you still passionate about your job just like the day you were hired? I think everyone can see the evolution of his career. From the top to the bottom. All I see is smoke and no flame. Get back that desire and fire to be the best and maybe your players will follow like they once did. Vidor was close but now it's fading away. "Pirate Pride"? Where are you???
12. It will be the same as it has been all year long for Vidor. Vidor will be out coached once more in a close game. Ozen-20 Vidor-14
