The East Texas State Champs leave tomorrow for Bay City and the 14 year old Southwest Regional Tournament. They play South Arkansas at 11am Friday morning.

When does Babe Ruth begin as far as registration and tryouts?

Start at halloween and count 6 weeks back and thats when it starts every year. So registration should start 2-3 weeks before then.

Did I miss something here!? Enjoy what moment? The moment of going to an allstar tournament, one you should have clearly won, and getting sent home packing. Im sure the guys on the team think every night before they go to bed about being a state semi-finalist. Come on... There was obviously some shady things that went on behind the scenes somewhere along the line. A Mid County allstar team should never lose the first tournament, and this 13 yr old team now joins the 15 yr olds (knocked out in the state round each of the past 3 years with one of the most talented teams ever assembled under the same coach, ill let you figure that one out) in their quest to blow talent.

You're missing the point here. Why is it about where the kids are from? It shouldnt be, and it cant be if any of the allstar teams are going to be successful. Its about the best players being there, and the best players being on the field. A good manager can "manage" attitude and not just throw a good ball player out of the mix because they would rather not deal with it. And to compare this 13 yr old team to the 14 yr old team is an absolute joke. The only thing that might be better on the 13 yr old team is the coaching staff, but as far as the level of play and talent its not even close. Im not sure what the "score" was the other day or if the entire 14 yr old team was even there, but in the end it probably wasnt even close. If it was an actual game that meant something it wouldnt have been for sure. And honestly, whats with the "Go 'Dogs" comment? Its not the Nederland Babe Ruth Bulldogs... Am I the only Nederland person that can see this? Its sad how short-sighted most of you "dogs" are.

No, Im not saying they didnt make it because they're not from Nederland although from the looks of things that might be the case. Im just saying 2 allstars are not on the roster. I know most of the kids in this group and the missing 2 are way above alot of this team. Its not my place to name names because neither of the missing kids are my own, but if you had anything to do with that 13 yr old league this past season you should know who they are.

Thats probly why they wont go very far. So what if there are alot of Nederland kids on the team, its allstars now. Its about winning baseball games, not where a kid is from. Two of the best players in the league, who arent from Nederland, were left off the team. Had a kid hit over .400 on the season not make it. Just when I thought things were going to start being turned around over there with the whole new board and alot of the selfish people leaving, this happens. Props to Senior Babe Ruth though. Both their 16 year old allstars and 18 year old allstars won their state tournaments this weekend and will be moving on to regionals in a couple weeks. That 18 year old team could win the whole thing. An 18 year old team thats made up of 5 Nederland, 5 PNG, 2 West Brook, and 4 Vidor guys. Everyone also needs to realize that Nederland Babe Ruth and Mid-County (senior) Babe Ruth are two completely seperate organizations. At Senior Babe Ruth theres none of the constant fighting between the adults who are supposed to be their for THE kids, not THIER kids. All the coaches stay every year, until they turn 65, and they also make up the board. Maybe its time for "little" babe ruth to take a page out of senior babe ruths book and get things turned around over there.

Whoa whoa whoa. Lets stop right there. Coach Williams was brutal. Especially his last 2 seasons at Ned. Where he INSISTED on not only starting his son, but playing him almost the entire game every game. If I was a parent of ANY of the other players on those teams I would have said stuff too. He wasted a pretty talented team his sons jr year. Then all his real talent transferred. Cant say I blame them. He may, and i use that word very very lightly, may have been a decent motivator. BUT he was a horrible x's and o's coach and had no relationship with his players. I once witnessed him sit in a coushioned, reclining chair to coach a basketball game. The guy was a slob. Thanks goodness I dont have to watch him twice a year any longer. English is the real deal for Ned. They will be MUCH better off.

I completly agree OF, but its not recruiting kids from football, but AFTER football. It may be difficult to have multi-sport starts carry you in 2 or more sports, but not impossible. If you have enough of them, and use them right, it will work.

Pat Abel has a kid that plays in the PNG Little Dribblers, but is NEVER around. And maybe these other coaches have parent problems every year because they do what it takes to win basketball games and dont let certain parents get involved, which causes friction. NOT because they are bad guys or coaches. Ever think of this!? The upper echelon kids coming into PNG dont play basketball because all theyve ever seen is how bad PNG gets its face kicked in ever year? Who wants to be a part of that? Its not about the number of kids that go out for bball at PNG its about the quality of kids. And the quality isnt there and will never be there unless someone puts a little more effort in getting them out there and turning the program around.

Ok ok, so weve got to give Ned a hard time. Just the way it has to be. How can you say most freshman football players at PNG have never played basketball before? I promise you 70% of them have. And I never said that these kids as freshmen would be able to compete with the jrs and srs who have been in the program for a couple of years already, some may be able to and some may not. BUT the whole point of the post was that IF he recruited these kids as freshman, by the time they were jrs and srs they would be alot further along and be better as a team because they are the superior athletes to the ones Abel is putting on the floor year in and year out. As far as Little Dribblers goes, Brian English does a pretty dang good job of running the Nederland Little Dribblers program, or at least helping out with it. By getting gym space and running all-star teams and such. Abel has done absolutely nothing in that way to help his program and it shows dramatically. English is going to make Abel look like a fool as long as they are coaching across the tracks from each other. English seems to have it between the ears, where as Abel doesnt. Abel once told one of his better young basketball players that he COULD NOT continue to play basketball for him if he chose to be in baseball athletics over basketball athletics, so he quit! I mean how ignorant is that? Wheres Phil Vergera when you need him?

First of all, Nobody cares about Nederland. Second of all, you cant even spell Coach Abel's name right, thats pretty pathetic for someone who loves him so much. Third, If you would have read all the posts prior to the last few, part of Abel's problem is that he just "uses what he has." He coaches 9th grade football, he gets to see the best "NEW" athletes that PNG has to offer every single year, even before school starts. Start working on them guys to come out for bball right then. You cant be successful in basketball at a school like PNG where Football and Baseball dominate athletics if you dont "recruit" the better athletes to come out and play for you. Its not like it would be all that difficult to turn things around at PNG. Hell their JV team last year almost went undefeated. If he would start now with the freshman and sophomore group and get 3 or 4 of the better athletes and do some of this almighty teaching you two have been raving about he could turn things around over there. And Fourth, Abel has done all but pretty much give up on developing younger talent. He ditched his basketball camp about 4-5 years ago. He does absolutely ZERO to help his Little Dribblers program. Its sad.

Yes Kirby, I am an Indian fan and have been my whole life. As have i supported all the athletic programs at PNG and will continue to do so through good times and bad. Convo was enjoyable thoughout the work day. Maybe well do it again sometime.

How about this, an even better question. Would PNG finish better this season with Andre Boutte or Pat Abel as coach? My point exactly. Just as PNG would finsih better with Coach Robertson, Coach English from Nederland, or Coach Rice from Central. Its that simple.

And it wouldnt be so hard to compete for places like that if they didnt just use what shows up at tryouts. Coach Abel, since he does coach football, sees all the athletes PNG has to offer every year. Talk to them about coming out. Get your best athletes on the court. Instead of just taking what shows up. Hes so hell bent on having guys who just play basketball that hes killed the program at PNG. Not saying that there are a ton of guys who want to play basketball at PNG, but with a little effort there could be more.
