[size=12pt]The Buna Cougars appeared to be primed to return to the Class 2A, Division II playoffs after they finished their predistrict schedule, 3-0.  However, some key late season injuries, a 4-3 district mark and some tiebreakers that did not go their way meant that the Cougars would be staying home for the playoffs.  In 2012, the rigors of 10-2A-I are behind Buna.  However, awaiting the Cougars is new distict 21-3A and its own set of challenges.  But Coach Bradley Morgan and thirteen starters are ready to face those challenges.

Returning starters: 6[/b]

This year, the Cougars will be counting on a veteran offensive line to protect the newcomers taking over at the skill positions.  Those veteran linemen, senior guard Chris Champion (2nd team all district in 2011), junior guard J.M Kelly and senior tackles Bryce Tippett and Justin Westbrooks, will be joined by sophomore center Justin Durden.  Glen Patrick (8-18, 164 yd, 1 TD passing; 39 carries, 65 yd., 1 TD rushing in 2011) will return for his senior season to guide the Cougars slot-T defense.  The hole left by the graduated Lynn Williams in the running game will be filled by senior running back Ethan Chandler (12 carries, 80 yd), junior running backs Sage Smith (10 carries, 89 yd. and McCrea Lopez (13 carries, 58 yd, 1 TD), and senior fullback Dalton Ford (13 carries, 84 yd, 1 TD).  Senior tight end Tate LeJeune will figure in the Buna passing game (1 catch, 26 yd, 1 TD)

Buna returns a veteran defense as seven starters come back.  Three of those veterans are on the line as seniors Champion, Tippett and Ford will be joined by junior Connor Dawson.  Smith, senior Bradley Arnold and junior Trace Williams return at linebacker for Buna.  Senior free safety Patrick (2nd team all district in 2011) will be joined in the Cougar secondary by senior strong safety Matthew Biddle and junior cornerback Lopez.

Buna will open up its 2012 season against Center on August 31st.  The Cougars' 21-3A district opener will be on September 28th as they host Bridge City.  The Cougars will end their regular season on November 2nd at Orangefield.
