What a difference a coach makes, first 23 win season in 28 years. Go Cards

Recommended Posts

The Lamar Cardinals were 15-17 last year. The Cards didn't even qualify for their conference tourney in the last three years.  New coach, conference tourney champs, and now they are in the dance.  Thanks to coach Knight for bringing the program back.
Now, a few good recruiting years and we are back in the sweet 16.
This is how Lamar's athletics should be.
The program starts with the coaching.

Thanks to Coach Knight, are you serious. That team was good enough to win it under Roc. Knight didnt have nothing to do with that. Those kids were just that good. Sweet 16 wont happen. He wont make it out of conference next year.

He wasn't making a million. He made 600k. At Lamar he makes about 200k. I think he will stay awhile but he won't coach major college ball ever again. But he could leave for a Butler type school.

After what he did to Indiana and TT he wont be leaving LU anytime soon. At least not for a head coaching job. Lucky he got the LU job.

Indiana?? He never was the head coach there just his old man, Bob Knight. In college basketball coaches make the world of difference. He made that difference in this team. He called them out when they needed it and they responded in a big way. Most coaches don't have the guts to do that. Congrats to those players but big ups to Coach Knight as well. I agree with the Butler comment but I think he will stay at LU for a while and I do believe he will win a couple of championships. It will be a work in progress now because he has a lot of seniors to replace.

Like I said him calling his players out was good but some of the things he said should have stayed in the locker room. He was complaining like they were not even in the conference tourney. They had 18 wins when he went off like that to the public. Those kids would have won without him because  they had that much talent. But now since the seniors are gone and 3 out of the 6 seniors he was talking about have a chance to play pro ball somewhere will always be known for the college basketball players on drugs and that will coast them money overseas and scared to be touched by sports agents because of what they coach said on national television about them. Like I said him ranting about things he could of easily handled in the locker room or office had to be brought out in public because he didn't know what else to do. A father with no control over his sons running to a talk show.

I see your point but to me it says a lot when one of those seniors came to his office and apologized not just for his self but the other seniors on the team after the rant. I don't see this hurting their futures in anyway. Every basketball (or any athlete) has dirt that agents will for sure know or find out about. That isn't going to stop agents as long as they get money in their pockets. If there is one thing I would change about the rant would be the drug thing. Like I said it doesn't hurt their future in playing basketball overseas to me at all but people already have bad options about athletes so that doesn't make it any better. But what said was said and it was positive result for the team and to me those kids just because of how they reacted. They could of easily shut down and gave up but they didn't. They could of not walked in his office and apologize but they did. There is some very very positive result from this situation that to me you have to give Coach Knight a lot of credit for. Not saying his going to be next Bobby Knight or anything just appreciate him being bold not for his self but the betterment of the players.

I feel you but that was my biggest thing about the rant is him saying they were on drugs. I was saying the same  thing. Either they were going to shut it down or play harder than they ever have to prove him wrong. I just didnt like how he went on tv and just went crazy on them, but i guess every coach has his own way of doing things. But the drug comment could of not been said because I saw in the past cost alot of players overseas close to 5,000 a month until they proved they wasnt on drugs which took them a few years.

Here's the deal.  If you are on drugs, that is a YOU problem.  It's not the coach's fault if you get called out on it.  They're lucky no one went to the police and they got kicked out of school.  I don't feel sorry for college students on full scholarship that risk all they have going to take ILLEGAL drugs for recreation.  They have to be smarter.

And here's the deal, as a coach you are like the father away from home. the locker room is the family's house. You handle that kind of business inside your house, not in the public eye. Like I said before some things are not to be said for the world to know. If LU would of losss the rest of the games it would have been blamed on drugs and it would of been said Knight couldn't handle his team. Since they won he is almighty Knight. So if your son grows up and have a drug problem or tries drugs will you go out and tell your friends he is on drugs? I would hope not, and I would hope you would try to handle that privately in the comfort of your own home. Everything else he said was okay. But if they had been that bad all season why did he keep playing them is my question.
