/2/2011 - No. 18 Roadrunners take two from Northeast Texas
Greening, Robson Solid in Mound Starts

The 18th-ranked Angelina College Roadrunners made it nine wins in their past 10 games with an impressive sweep of Northeast Texas College Saturday afternoon at Roadrunner Complex in Lufkin.

The ‘Runners used a four-run sixth inning to take the opener by a score of 5-4, then pounded out 13 hits to take the nightcap 11-1 in eight innings.

In the early game, Todd Wallace drove in two runs with a single off the glove of Eagle pitcher Ethan Cole in the bottom of the sixth, K.J. Semien drove in another run with an infield groundout – with Grant Clyde gambling and scoring from third on the play – and Austin Land singled home another run as the Roadrunners rallied from a 3-1 deficit to make a winner of starter Chase Greening, who got big help from his defense, specifically shortstop Zach Taylor and second-baseman Seth Spivey. Each of those middle infielders made run-saving plays to keep the game close, allowing the Roadrunner offense to mount a comeback.

Greening went six innings, giving up a two-RBI double to the Eagles’ John Maldonado in the third and an RBI single to Justin Creel in the fifth. Greening left after the top of the sixth with AC trailing, but the Roadrunner rally in the bottom of the inning lifted the Lufkin native to his eighth win against no losses. NTCC’s Will Wagner hit a solo homer in the seventh to cut the AC lead to 5-4, but Jerin Spikes and Nick Wright closed out the game, with Wright earning the save.

Robson, a surprise starter in the nightcap, completely shut down the Eagles over his 6 2/3 innings. The sophomore from League City has thrown most of his innings from the bullpen, but showed no effects of the limited work in holding the Eagles to one run on seven hits. Robson struck out three and walked four, allowing nothing but singles to a hard-hitting NTCC lineup.

AC’s offensive outburst included a solo homer from Jay Young, who drove in two runs in the game; Keith Cormier, whose double, single and groundout accounted for three RBI; Seth Spivey, who drove in two runs while scoring twice; and Zach Taylor, whose two-run single in the eighth completed the mercy killing. Austin Land and Tommy Henk also drove in runs for the red-hot Roadrunners.

In addition, the Lady Roadrunner softball team split a doubleheader with Galveston, dropping the first game by a 3-0 score before taking the second game 5-3. The Lady ‘Runners travel to San Jacinto for a doubleheader scheduled for a 2 p.m. start.

The Roadrunner baseball team (26-12, 9-3) will host Texarkana in a Wednesday doubleheader featuring the first- and second-place teams in Region XIV’s East Zone. Game time is 1 p.m.
