MONT BELVIEU — The Sterling Rangers and Lee Ganders basketball teams each opened up with a win in the Gulf Coast Classic Monday at Barbers Hill. The Ganders defeated the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears in a 48-44 final. The Rangers got their first win in a 49-44 final over the Montgomery Bears.

However, the Ganders later fell short to C.E. King in a 65-61 final. Jaevon Richardson led the Ganders in both games with 13 in the first and 17 in the second. The Ganders record now stands at 5-10.

“The kids played well but made some mistakes at crucial times,” Lee coach Trent Manuel said. “We were trading baskets with them. We would come down and hit a shot and our defense wouldn’t get back quick in time and that allowed them to score. We can’t be doing that if we want a chance to win.”

The Ganders next game is scheduled for a 10:30 a.m. start today.

The Rangers’ win over Montgomery was their only game of the day. They were led by Andre Corley, who finished the day with 14 points. DeShawn Williams scored 12 and Karrion Glover finished with 10.

“I thought we were sluggish in the first half but picked it up a bit in the second,” Sterling coach Mark Patton said. “It’s a win and we’ll take it of course. There are still a lot of areas we need to improve on.”

The Rangers next game is slated for a 10:30 a.m. tipoff today against Nederland.

“I expect it will be a tough game against Nederland,” Patton said. “We beat them at their tournament last year and I’m sure they remember it and will want to get us back for it.”

The Barbers Hill Eagles defeated the Anahuac Panthers 50-27.

Carson Asbury led the Eagles 15 points and 10 rebounds. Jordan Tarver led the Panthers with 16 points.

Monday night’s game gives the Eagles a record of 14-4 and the Panthers are currently 5-9.

Barbers Hill will take on Dayton today at 3 p.m. and Anahuac will take on Pasadena at 4:30 p.m.

Basketball is 5 on 5....so it's not really a sport where 2a vs 5a is going to make as big of a difference.  If you got 2 guys that can play out of 200 boys in school, then what's it matter if the other team has 1,000 boys from which to choose.?
Whole different animal from football, where you need at least 25+ guys to field a team.

Up until last year, when BH won by beating a very good Cleveland team, they had not won the Gulf Coast Tournament since 2005.

Regardless as it may seem, you still have to play good basketball and win games, to get to the Championship game!

Baytown Sterling - 61
Nederland - 54
[/quote] Bulldog sould have handled the Rangers. As good as Golden Triangle teams are...

I watched the game. Bulldogs are the better team but Sterling made shots and Nederland didnt. That was the story of the game.
