For so early in the district season, a couple of big volleyball matches are set to be played tonight.

At Mont Belvieu, Goose Creek Memorial will carry a 2-1 league record into Eagle Field House to play Barbers Hill, which is also 2-1.

And at Crosby, the Lady Cougars will try to fend off pesky Dayton. Both matches are scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m.

Crosby, 25-2 overall, leads 19-4A at 3-0. Four teams are 2-1 – Barbers Hill, Memorial, Dayton and Galena Park. Kingwood Park is 1-2 in district and North Forest and C.E. King are 0-3.

Memorial stunned Dayton last Tuesday to get off to a 2-0 start in league play and the Patriot girls were even with Crosby early Friday after splitting the first two sets of that match.

But the Lady Cougars made quick work of Memorial the rest of the night to win the match 25-16, 24-26, 25-9, 25-15.

Kacy Morris and Jordan Sparks each had 12 kills for Crosby and they also had 18 and 17 digs, respectively, with Meagan Veach getting 15 digs. Jessie Travis had 40 assists for Crosby.

Kingwood Park handed Barbers Hill (21-9) its first league loss Friday in a five-set marathon. All of the first four sets ended 25-21, with Kingwood Park taking advantage of the homecourt advantage to take the decisive fifth am 15-10.

The flu has been going through the Barbers Hill team, reports coach John Leonard.

“We are trying to get well, but it’s been a bit of a struggle for us lately. I missed four days last week and it got real hard for us last week,†he said. “That’s athletics, I guess.â€
