QB Cody Green Update

Recommended Posts

Heralded Nebraska freshman quarterback Cody Green will miss the Cornhuskers' first several spring practices with a soft tissue injury in his hip.

Nebraska coach Bo Pelini described Green's injury as a "freak accident" that occurred while he was lifting weights earlier in the Cornhuskers' winter conditioning drills.

"It's not a very serious injury but just a soft tissue deal that he aggravated and that will need a little bit more time," Pelini said. "He'll be out there pretty quick, we anticipate, but we just don't want to rush him out. Because if we do it too quick, it will aggravate the injury and that's not something we want to do."

Green skipped his final semester in high school to join the Cornhuskers' program in January to get a head start in the quarterback competition to replace Joe Ganz.

The competition was already shaken up when Patrick Witt announced earlier this spring he will transfer. That means that Zac Lee, Kody Spano, converted junior linebacker Latravis Washington and walk-on Ron Kellogg Jr. will share snaps when practices begin Wednesday.

Green, a 6-foot-4, 220-pounder from Dayton, Texas, was expected to challenge for a starting job this spring because of his athleticism. He produced nearly 5,000 yards of total offense and accounted for 62 touchdowns by rushing or throwing last season, leading his team to the Texas Class 4A state championship game.

Pelini doesn't expect Green's injury will keep him too far behind in the competition.

"He'll be in the meetings and going through things," Pelini said. "He's really a high school senior and shouldn't be here anyway is the way I look at it. I look at him as a bonus that he's even here at all."

Team doctors have told Pelini on a scale of 1 through 10, with 1 being the lowest, Green's injury is considered a 1.

"Obviously when he's here, we'd like to see him practicing, but the most important thing is that it's not something long-term," Pelini said.
