East Texas Top 20 (baseball)

This is according to insideprepbaseball.com

1.Brandon Belt

LHP, Lufkin Hudson, 6-5, 190, L/L

College: Texas

Notes: Brandon is one of the most projectible pitchers in the 2006 class – nationwide. He has a lot of upside, and he’s really good right now. Long, loose, athletic frame. Quick arm produces a fastball that has been up to 94 MPH. Breaking ball flashes as a plus pitch, and he is just cool as a cucumber when the pressure is on. In the regional semifinals last year against an outstanding Lorena team and in front of a packed stadium at Bryan High School, he came on to pitch the last 2-3 innings and mowed through a salty lineup that included two Division I signees and a high-level juco signee. He also delivered the game-winning hit in extra innings. He plays the game without fear.

2. Clayton Ehlert, RHP/OF, Little Cypress-Mauriceville, 6-0, 185, R/R

College: Texas A&M

Notes: One of the top overall ballplayers in the class. Clayton is a tremendous athlete. He’s strong, he can run, he has a live arm on the mound, and he hits the ball a ton. As a pitcher, Clayton is upper 80s, low 90s with a power breaking ball, and he is a bulldog – pounds the strikezone and challenges hitters. He covers a lot of ground in the outfield. Gets good jumps, takes good angles, and of course he has a strong arm out there as well. Very instinctive player. He should hit for average and power at the next level.

3. Kevin Angelle, LHP, Bridge City, 6-2, 185, L/L

College: Texas A&M

Notes: Kevin is a big, athletic lefthander who has been pitching in big high school games since his freshman year. As a junior, he was the centerpiece of a talented Cardinals team that reached the state semifinals. Right now he is upper 80s, up around 90 MPH with his fastball, and he commands three pitches for strikes. His breaking ball flashes as a plus, plus out pitch at the next level. His best is still in front of him. He can also swing the bat with some power.

4. Carson Middleton, RHP/IF, Lindale, 6-3, 180, R/R

College: McLennan Community College

Notes: Carson is an outstanding athlete. His place at the next level is almost certainly on the mound, but he can also run and swing the bat with some pop. His velocity was down the last time I saw him in August at Minute Maid Park, but he was in the upper 80s, flirting around 90 during the high school season. Also knows how to spin the breaking ball. He has reportedly added some muscle and rested his arm during the offseason. He could come on with a big spring.

5. Clint Helms, RHP, Whitehouse, 6-3, 210, R/R

Notes: I got Clint’s name when he was a sophomore and Josh Wilson, who was drafted in the second round by the Cardinals last June, was a junior at Whitehouse. Coach Danny Robey said Clint was a guy to watch. He was hurt last year, so he’s still flying under the radar a little bit, but he’s a big guy with a live arm.

6. Clint Stubbs, OF, Atlanta, 6-2, 175, L/R

College: Texas

Notes: Right now, Clint is very raw, but he is arguably the best runner in this Texas class (consistent 6.4 in the 60), and he shows a lot of natural power in batting practice. He’s still long and lanky, and he does not focus all of his attention on baseball yet. He will go to Texas and have a chance to fill his potential, and there is a lot of it.

7. Zach Harwood, RHP, Port Neches-Groves, 6-2, 175, R/R

College: Rice

Notes: Zach is an 87-89 MPH, pushing 90 MPH arm with a good breaking ball. He is just starting to come into his own as a pitcher, and he has a lot of upside. Rice has developed a reputation for taking pitchers who are right on the verge coming out of high school and turning them into dominators at the college level. Zach could certainly develop into that kind of pitcher.

8. Casey Whitmer, RHP, Kilgore, 6-0, 175, R/R

Notes: Casey is a power pitcher and an athlete with a chance to really do some special things at the next level, either as a pitcher or a hitter. He runs his fastball up there around 88-91 MPH, he spins a tight, power breaking ball, and he has command of a quality changeup as well. Casey can also swing the bat for average and power. Good feel for the game.

9. Brody Greene, Bullard, RHP, 6-0, 180, R/R

Notes: According to Coach Ronnie Dent at Bullard, Brody is a terrific competitor and a smart baseball player in addition to being a tremendous athlete. Coach Dent says Brody has been clocked up to 92 MPH with his fastball, and he throws a quality breaking ball for strikes in any count.

10. Ryan Proudfoot, RHP, Bullard Brookhill, 6-3, 185, R/R

Notes: Ryan is another one flying under the radar a little bit right now. Scouts and recruiters know about him. He’s a big body with a live arm – reportedly up to 90-91 MPH lately – but he still has not broken out as a big-time prospect. That could happen at any time. He projects to fill out, get stronger, and throw harder.

11. Josh Gill, IF, Texarkana Texas, 5-11, 180, L/R

Notes: Josh is an athletic, versatile infielder who should be able to play third, short or second at the next level. He is a 6.9 runner, he has an above-average arm, and he has a lot of raw power. Still rough around the edges, but he plays hard and he’s aggressive, particularly at the plate.

12. Cody Mire, RHP, Port Neches-Groves, 6-3, 175, R/R

Notes: Cody is a long, wiry righthander with a loose, quick arm that produces a fastball up around 88-89 MPH. He’s still putting it all together, and he will likely fill out and throw harder. Lots of upside.

13. Chad Sherman, RHP, Bullard, 6-4, 210, R/R

Notes: Bullard head coach Ronnie Dent says Chad is a versatile athlete who can play any position on the field. On the mound, he has reportedly been clocked up to 91 MPH, and he also commands a curveball and a good changeup for strikes. Coach Dent says Chad is a fierce competitor and a clutch player who has come up with big plays, both as a hitter and as a pitcher, throughout his high school career.

14. James Puckett, IF/RHP, Atlanta, 6-0, 175, R/R

Notes: James is a ballplayer. He is a quality defensive infielder with soft, quick hands and a strong arm, and he stings the ball at the plate. He also gets up on the mound and throws a fastball in the 86-88 MPH range with a quality breaking ball. He is a competitor and a hard worker.

15. Justin Coats, IF, Texarkana Texas, 5-9, 170, R/R

Notes: Justin is a solid middle infielder with good feet, quick actions and an above-average arm. He is a 6.7-6.8 runner in the 60, and he has good pop at the plate. He is not a real big guy, but he has great hand speed, and that creates some surprising punch as a hitter. He hit .433 as a junior and was the team MVP.

16. Corey Henderson, OF/IF, Tyler Lee, 5-9, 165, R/R

Notes: Corey has a lot of athletic ability and versatility. He plays shortstop and pitches for the Rebels, but he could also play in the outfield at the next level. He runs pretty well, has a strong arm, and he puts a good swing on the ball.

17. Cody Williams, LHP/OF, Pittsburg, 6-1, 225, L/L

Notes: Cody is a big, strong balllplayer who can reportedly swing the bat with some pop from the left side.

18. Will Alvis, IF/RHP, Jasper, 6-2, 210, R/R

Notes: Will is a big, strong, physical baseball player who has a lot of pop at the plate and a good arm on the mound. Great makeup, and he comes from a good baseball family.

19. Patrick Lewis, C, Bullard Brookhill, 5-11, 205, R/R

Notes: Patrick is a strong, thick catcher with a good arm and some pop at the plate. He threw home to second consistently around 2.0 seconds when I saw him and went as good as 1.97. Showed good bat speed and strength at the plate, consistently driving the ball to the gaps with authority.

20. Sean Benton, SS/RHP, Gladewater, 6-0, 160, R/R

College: Northeast Texas Community College

Notes: Sean is a mid-80s fastball command-type pitcher. He will not blow many people away with a fastball at 84-86, but he puts it where he wants it, and he also throws a good slider at 78-80 MPH and a plus change at 70-71 MPH. He lives on the corners and knows how to pitch.

Best of the rest: Kory Cleveland, RHP/IF, Carthage; Dustin Jones, OF, Tyler Lee; Corey Brown, SS/RHP, Marshall; Will Thomas, IF/RHP, Texarkana Pleasant Grove; Keith Allen, SR, LHP, Texarkana Liberty-Eylau; Cory Wells, SR, IF, Texarkana Liberty-Eylau; Josh Riley, IF, Sulphur Springs; Alex Aguilar, RHP, Sulphur Springs; Carlin Freeman, RHP/OF, Longview; Josh Reed, IF, Longview
