Lamar needs to hire a coach, recruit women swimmers, and join CUSA in that sport now.

That would be nice but it won't happen.  They'd never vote to let us compete in just one sport.  But 5 years from now, who knows what opportunites will be out there.  Lamar should be just about finished with all of it's facility upgrades and it's athletic budget should be closer to $10M a year than just $5M now.  Lamar should be able to make a jump to a better conference at that time.

CUSA?  You people are dreaming.  Lamar needs to be very successful in the Southland Conf first and foremost.  Compete for and win a FCS(D1AA) championship.  There are too many other options for CUSA to add.  Why Lamar when you have all of the SunBelt schools (read established D1A) to choose from.  Troy, Arkansas State, North Texas, etc., to name a few.  Besides, a $10 million athletic budget is nothing these days.  That's probably the very bottom end for an FBS program.

Besides, CUSA is not looking to add another football any time soon.

Coach, CUSA only have 5 schools with womens swimming; Houston, Rice, SMU, Marshall, and ECU. CUSA would welcome Lamar with

open arms. Conference allow one sport members all the time. Check out CUSA mens swimming, they have Hawaii as a one sport member.

Just a question mffl and name is a hidden myth. Outside looking in but what does Lamar or Beaumont offer CUSA?

The University of South Alabama may be next to join the CUSA:

Once a coach is named, Stokes said a plan will be set in motion.

“Next year we’ll sign 30 players and ‘greyshirt’ all of them,†he said. “We’ll do the same thing the next year. In 2009, we’ll play for the first time, as a club-level team. The next two seasons, we’ll compete in Division I-AA. Then in year four, we’ll play as a member of Division I and compete in the Sun Belt Conference.“

However, residence in the Sun Belt may be relatively short-lived. Conference USA, which has a far more recognizable membership, has already made overtures to South Alabama.

“They’d like to establish a relationship because of their tie-in with the GMAC Bowl,†he said. “They are very interested in South Alabama joining their league.“

Stokes said the city and county of Mobile have pledged “significant†financial support. The city will allow South Alabama to use 40,000-seat Ladd-Peebles Stadium free of charge for the first five years of the program’s existence, and nine luxury boxes will be constructed to help raise additional money.

Lamar's not looking to join the CUSA anytime soon.  They have their hands full starting football and upgrading their facilities the next 5 years.  After that, if there's a big shakeup of conferences then they'll probably try to move up to a better conference.  But it's always fun to talk about this stuff.

Whew! I was thinking the same thing. Luckily he was referring to swimming and not the whole athletic program.
