            Tom Halliburton’s Track

Volume 38, Number 5

An abbreviated schedule with the overlapping spring break weeks delayed several of our region’s stronger track athletes from improving on their season-best performances but a few top numbers resulted from last week’s meets at Orangefield and Sour Lake.

Most interesting item could be Little Cypress-Mauriceville senior Dinah Tippins (handing the baton to Jordyn Chargois in this adjacent photo).

Tippins was timed at 24.70, improving her area lead in that event. She placed sixth in the state meet at the same event last year in a time of 24.60. Dinah’s Orangefield time outlasted teammate Brianca Barclay by nearly a full second.

Why do we list this comparison? Two reasons. First, our LC-M sprinter has two months to work on the possibility of lowering that time if she’s able to return again to state.

Second, and more importantly, track and field – when practiced properly – is HARD work. This sport lacks the team glamour of football, basketball and baseball. It generally attracts very little spectator or media interest. If people jump up and down about it, those people usually jump up and down after the athlete’s accomplishment.

LC-M’s girls have captured the team title in each meet they have entered this spring. That speaks to the work of coach Becca Peveto and the work habits that already have been in place. But hard work must continue. The margins in track success usually are extremely tiny.
