Lady Cards look to extend winning streak to four games

BEAUMONT - Riding a three game win streak, the Lamar University women's basketball team will look to continue their recent success on Tuesday night when they host the IUPUI Jaguars at 7:00 at the Montagne Center.

This will be the second meeting between the Lady Cardinals and IUPUI who faced off in Indianapolis, Ind. last year on December 13. The Jaguars handed LU a 65-57 loss at the IUPUI Gymnasium in their only meeting, holding off a late-game surge by Lamar.

The Lady Cardinals enter Tuesday's game with a 4-2 record, on the heels of a 71-47 victory over Wiley College at the Montagne Center on Saturday. The Lady Cards notched their third straight win behind freshman Tamara Abalde's record tying 44-point performance.

Lamar is led in scoring by Abalde, who is averaging a Southland Conference-best 19.5 points per game along with 7.3 rebounds per game, while sophomore Brittney Williams is averaging 12.2 points per game. Junior Nikki Williams is averaging 11.7 point s per game and has a team-high 17 steals while senior Aida Bakhos leads the team with 7.5 rebounds per game. Junior Agnija Reke has also been solid for the Lady Cards, passing out a team-high 24 assists.

As a team the Lady Cardinals are shooting .388 from the field and have out scored their opponents 66.2 to 61.5. Lamar has also controlled the boards this season, out rebounding their opponents 41.2 to 37.5.

IUPUI enters the game with a 3-3 record after picking up road wins over USC Upstate and Gardner-Webb in their last two games. They defeated Gardner-Webb 66-54 on Saturday night and took down USC-U 65-56 on Wednesday.

 

The Jaguars are led by Jernisha Cann's 12.8 points and nine rebounds per game, while Julia Whitted is averaging 11.3 points per contest. Christin Cunningham has also been an offensive force for IUPUI with 10.2 points per game, while Brykeesha Tate has passed out a team-high 20 assists.

As a team the Jaguars, who are shooting .402 on the year, are averaging 56.5 points per game, while allowing their opponents to score 58.8 points per game. IUPUI has also been out rebounded this season, giving up 34.2 boards per game while averaging 32.2 rebounds of their own.

After Tuesday's game the Lady Cardinals will return to action on Saturday afternoon when they take on the Chicago State Cougars at 2 p.m. in Chicago, Ill.
