Vidor boys 2, Port Neches-Groves 1

VIDOR -- Payton Smith pounded home a header off a Vidor corner kick with 12 minutes to play as the Pirates delivered a 2-1 home upset of Port Neches-Groves in Pirate Stadium.

Vidor scored 1:15 into the game as Jeremy Wollam roared through a lethargic PN-G defense. The Indians (12-5-4 and 11-4-2) countered in the first half's 20th minute as Evan Johnson fired home a shot from near the penalty box. Johnson had intercepted a Vidor clearing pass for PN-G before he delivered his shot.

Although PN-G led in shots on goal, 8-6, Indians first-year head coach Don Sandell labeled the night as one of his team's most disappointing performances of the year.

"I don't think we wanted to be there tonight," Sandell said. "It was obvious that we weren't mentally into the game. We were just still on spring break."

PN-G completes its regular season on Tuesday at Nederland in a 7:30 boys game which follows the 5:30 varsity girls game.
