Young Bears rip past 'Stangs, 18-0

LITTLE CYPRESS — Being as it was the first varsity game for many of the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Battlin’ Bears, Coach Steve Griffith was pretty pleased with what he saw Tuesday night at Don Gibbens Field.

The Bears stroked out 18 runs against the West Orange-Stark Mustangs and the Bear pitchers hurled a shutout in a 18-0 five-inning victory.

LC-M (1-0) did most of its damage in the second inning when 13 batters went up to the plate.

Jon Gunn laced a two-run homer to center in the second while Tim Barry later pounded a three-run triple to right field plating Chad Richard and Adam Leggett, who started on the mound for LC-M and went two innings giving up three hits and no runs.

Leggett struck out three batters in his time on the hill.

The Mustangs’ (0-1) started Terry Veitch but the starter could not contain the LC-M bats as the Bears scored three runs in the first off a three-run bomb from Jake Rowell.

Rowell, who is headed to McNeese State University next season, took a 1-1 pitch to deep right field for his first homer of the season. The home run plated Ben Jones who walked and Chris Hearn who reached on an error.

The LC-M catcher finished 2-for-3 in the game with a walk and a double.

The Mustang bats were silent in their first game under first-year coach Derek Rivers collecting just six hits and leaving 11 runners on base.

LC-M pitchers struck out 11 WO-S batters.

Jacoby Franks got three of the Mustang six hits and also stole a base in the third inning.

“We put the ball in play with some hard hits and I am proud of our kids,†Griffith said. “Our pitchers came out and threw strikes and that is what you hope for early in the season. We keep doing that, we will have a chance.â€

Barry made it 4-0 in the second when he scored on a sacrifice fly by Gunn.

After Jones’ homer, Hearn ripped a double to left field and would later make it 7-0 when he scored as Cloeren reached on an error.

After Barry’s three-run triple, Leggett kit a RBI double to center making it 11-0 Bears.

Gunn plated Leggett on a RBI double giving LC-M a 12-0 lead after the second inning.

LC-M did not let up in the third as Josh Garza plated Aaron Milligan on a RBI single to left and with the bases floated Dallas Brown stepped up to the plate.

Brown took the third pitch he saw over the center field fence for a grand slam making it 17-0 Bears after three innings.

Rowell collected his fourth RBI of the game in the bottom of the fourth with a double to right which scored Milligan who reached on a fielder’s choice.

“You never expect to score that many runs,†Griffith said. “They (WO-S) have a lot of kids still playing basketball so they are still going to be a good baseball team down the road when they get those guys back. Coach Rivers is a good baseball coach who will bring in some good things. With us graduating 11 kids last year, we will take any win we can get.â€

ALL we had to do was put the ball inplay. Not impressed with the cubbies starting infield ! It looks like we need Earl and Bevil real real BAD ;D I think Gearhart should start on the mound and not behind the plate ??? We need a 2nd baseman and EARL in center.. HELP ;)

You guys didn't score a single run on that unimpressive infield.  Also, I doubt Earl and Bevil can help cover 18.

1st game jitters on the starting infield...as to Andre and Earl, that's only 2 guys...and neither is a pitcher.  Andre might be, but that still leave the ponies shallow in that position.  Remember, that even if Earl had been there in center...he still would have been looking at the ball going over the fence at least 4 times.  And he can't cover the WHOLE outfield.  It's not a matter of 2 or 3 outstanding athletes, it's a matter of a whole team of good athletes.

We're a Football school. We have no big Little Leagues in West Orange like we did years ago. 90% of the kids at memorial field in Baseball go to LC-M.

So does that mean that LCM doesn't do so well in football because 95% of the kids in the Orange County Cobras go to WOS (props, Coach Bim  ;D)...come on...you had WESCO, and y'all let it die...there was no community support for it.  There was also Twin County, where some of the kids from the bancroft area played at...same thing.  At times, it felt like a baby sitting service, rather than a league.  To have good players, you have to have PARENTAL support to get those kids to practice and games.  Memorial is a great organziation, but the LL organizations became like the "welfare" leagues, where parents wanted a whole lot for a little money, and NEVER wanted to help with field upkeep, maintenance, or other things that Memorial EXPECTS out of their parents.  You may think I had kids at Memorial, but I lived the LL experience up through Senior Leauge.  I worked while others sat in the stands complaining...so if there are no leagues to develop talent...blame yourselves...you let them die...

Well said.  However, all those kids are now eligible to play in Bridge City LL.  Still no excuses.

      It has been frustrating seeing the lack of coverage from virtually EVERY media outlet.  We (Chester) are in the SE Texas coverage area.  There are no radio broadcast from our area, and Ch 12 is the only one that has even mentioned it.   I know I could have gotten donations to cover a SETX Sports broadcast.  Oh well, water under the bridge - we aren’t as big as Silsbee, WO-S or PN-G.
