A loss here will more than likely kick one out of a district champ bid, emotions will be high. If WOS comes out and plays like they have been, then there is no worry. But the same for HJ, they can play ball as well. Its going to be a great game and atmosphere. HJ got the "W" in their house and i assume the same for WOS. WOS squeaks by.........by 6. Guest SETXsports.comNews Posted January 22, 2007 Report Share Posted January 22, 2007 WO-S, H-J face vital 21-3A tiltBy Van WadeThe Orange LeaderWEST ORANGE — This week will provide the tale of where the West Orange-Stark Mustangs will fit as far as the playoffs go out of District 21-3A.Long-time WO-S coach Doug McCarter is calling it “Heck Week†and deservedly so.The Mustangs (16-8, 6-1) are currently in a three-way tie atop the 21-3A standings with both Hardin-Jefferson (19-6, 6-1) and Silsbee (17-6, 6-1).There has been no question that those three schools have been dominant in the loop, it’s just a matter of where they will fall in the final standings as the second half of district starts Tuesday night.The Mustangs will play host to H-J Tuesday and will try to get revenge for their only 21-3A loss when they fell to the Hawks late, 73-71, in Sour Lake back on Dec. 18. WO-S will then face a critical road trip to Silsbee Friday to face the Tigers, a team the Mustangs defeated 70-51 back at Mustang Gym Dec. 21.The Hawks trailed the Mustangs 71-67 with less than a minute left in Sour Lake but WO-S missed six straight free throws down the stretch and H-J tallied the game’s last six points. H-J also defeated the Mustangs 68-53 at the Barbers Hill Tournament late last month.Now, Coach McCarter is looking for a quality win against his long-time buddy Todd Sutherland, head coach of the Hawks. The two have ran various camps for kids across Southeast Texas in recent years.“Without question, this week will decide a whole lot as far as playoff positioning is concerned,†said McCarter, after the Mustangs wiped out Kirbyville 102-30 at Mustang Gym Friday night.“All three teams are pretty evenly matched and are pretty deep. Hopefully our pressure on defense will help us out. If we played like we did tonight (against Kirbyville), I really like our chances. We’ve got to keep that type of play up.â€The Mustangs forced H-J into 32 turnovers in that first meeting. The downside — the Mustangs converted just 16-of-35 from the free-throw line.“I liked what we did to them (H-J) pressure-wise at there place,†McCarter said. “Free throws though, they killed us. We let a golden opportunity pass us by that night but with the game here at our place, we’re hoping for a little different ending.â€H-J is led by the likes of senior guard Ryan Donahoe and sophomore forward Trey Burrell.“H-J has some size, and some quickness,†McCarter said. “They have kids that can get the basket quick. They execute well and they’ll certainly be a challenge for us again.â€In other District 21-3A action Tuesday night the Orangefield Bobcats (11-10, 2-5) will play host to Kirbyville (8-11, 2-5) while the Bridge City Cardinals (2-18, 0-7) will welcome Jasper (4-3 in district).In boys District 22-4A play Tuesday the LC-M Bears (13-12, 3-4) will host first-place Beaumont Ozen (17-5, 7-0) while the Vidor Pirates (8-15, 2-5) head to second-place Dayton (15-6, 6-1). In 24-2A play the Deweyville Pirates will travel to Warren.Several important games are on the docket Tuesday in the girls District 21-3A race.The Orangefield Lady Bobcats (21-6, 8-1) will try to keep up the first-place pace with Silsbee (23-5, 8-1) as they face a stern road challenge at third-place Kirbyville (18-7, 6-3). The WO-S Lady Mustangs (16-7, 5-4), who dropped a tough 70-54 decision to Kirbyville Friday, will head to Sour Lake to take on the H-J Lady Hawks (18-12, 5-4) with both teams currently tied for fourth in the standings. The Bridge City Lady Cardinals 16-11, 1-8) will hit the road to face the last-place Jasper Lady Bulldogs (1-17, 0-9). In District 22-4A play the LC-M Lady Bears (12-14, 3-6) will travel to Beaumont Ozen (11-7, 7-2) while the Vidor lady Pirates (2-24, 0-9) welcome Dayton (10-16, 3-6). In District 24-2A play, the Deweyville Lady Pirates (10-12, 4-4) look to stay thick in the chase with a road date at Warren.In Friday’s boys action LC-M will host Dayton, Vidor will visit Beaumont Central, Orangefield hosts Bridge City, Silsbee visits WO-S and Deweyville entertains Anahuac.On the girls side Friday LC-M goes to Dayton, Vidor hosts Central, Orangefield is at Bridge City, WO-S welcomes Silsbee and Deweyville hosts Anahuac.
