  1. LU baseball may not be Top 20 program at this time but Coach Gilligan some how seems to keep a few locals including some very talented players from Nederland. If he can do it, I see no reason Coach Rock can't do the same with a winning basketball program. Like you mentioned that is really the key to having talented players want to play for you. However, if Coach Rock can't keep the locals then he'll just recruit the best available on a national scale. He is very well known in the college basketball coaching community. Lamar is lucky to have him!
  2. Well, thanks for the heads up. If they want to bash me so be it. If they want to bash the school my kids attend that is a little different. See, they attend NISD and my son wears the Black and Gold proudly.
  3. Some of you people I thought really knew football. If you would take Micah over Jamaal you need to apply for a position with the Houston Texans. Micah is the BEST RB I've ever seen in twenty plus years to come out of Nederland or PN-G. Yes, that includes Troy and Ron McGill. What some of you are forgetting is there is a very small difference between very good (All-State) and great (All-American). You guys are comparing a 4A All-State player to a 2nd team All-Big Twelve major college selection and Freshman All-American not to mention a track All-American as well. I wish Micah the best in the future with or without DI football.
  4. Thanks for that long winded post Mr Scott. <snicker>. Yeah, you're correct in the next 25 years I can't see Lamar hosting a home game with Texas, A&M, TT, or any Top 25 team in the country. Are you a Lamar grad? Are you a UT alum? Why are you such a huge UT fan if you didn't attend UT? That is if you didn't. I know several people who didn't attend any college institution that are hard core Texas fan's. I don't understand the loyalty there. You would rather pay $1500 for season tickets to UT than $500 for Lamar, not to mention travel cost and the 8 hour round trip. Now, I really don't care if you agree or disagree. I want football back at Lamar because I attended the school and have a degree in nursing. Football will build school spirit, pride among alumni and civic leaders, and supporters of Lamar University. It is about more than money (spent or made). It is about seeing the unversity grow and that growth is limited by not having a football team. You bring up these major colleges, Florida, LSU, Texas, A&M and etc. Well, my question is what would those schools look like without football? Answer, a lot different. There wouldn't be 58 thousand students paying that kind of money attending UT. Now, in the span of about twenty-five years Lamar went from winning a bowl game to dropping the program. I don't want opinions. I want facts as to why in the next twenty-five years Lamar can't go from beginning a program to competing for a DI-AA national championship or for a DI bowl game victory? Facts please, not opinions. We all know the value of opinions. They are like (well you know what) everyone has one.
  5. I voted DI-AA. I agree we must start at this level with the goal of DI and possiblity of moving into a better conference which would help all sports to compete on the national level. Before you laugh at me, remember Lamar just finished 9th in the country in golf. Lamar has been to the sweet-sixteen in basketball, baseball has had near misses in Austin to make it to Omaha and at one time with Sonny Jolly as track coach Lamar sent several athletes to the NCAA championships. I think the leadership is in place to make this happen. Just do it!
  6. Good work there, thanks! Yeah, Lamar did better than I thought. We're 1-0 in bowl games. Now, bring back football!!!
  7. You both make good points. I like this football talk about Lamar University. Just one point, there hasn't always been a DI-AA division. Yes, Lamar competed at the DI level and one year played in a "Bowl" game. I'm sure Coop can get his hands on information about the opponent and the year Lamar played in a bowl game. I do think Lamar lost the game. Record 0-1 in bowl games. One other point, I wouldn't be so quick to write off the possiblity of Todd Dodge as a HC here. There are a lot of wealthy folk here in SE Texas and since the mis-givens created by Lamar dropping football and promises being broken haven't given a dime to Lamar Athletics. You bring back football and hire a guy like Todd Dodge Lamar could raise the funds to pay a HC in the area of $250,000 a year plus incentives. There are a lot more millionairs in SE Texas than most people realize and quiet a few of those are Lamar University alumni.
  8. 1984 LC-M beat Marine Military 77-0 on Homecoming. The Bears scored on the last play of the game. Backup QB calls the pass play in the huddle. Coach Ron Dupree had more class than to do something like that. I do remember the coaches for Marine Military saying a few words after the game to the Bears coaches that I can't put on here.
  9. Okay, let me start by staying I'm a Bulldog fan now. I just haven't always been. I can still replay most of this game in my mind. At least the last two minutes of the game. Anyway, here it goes. 1989/90 LC-M versus Nederland at Bulldog Stadium. As always Nederland had a great crowd on hand. Several plays stand out. One LC-M is down on the 2 or 3 yard line of Nederland. Rusty Brown LC-M's QB appears to fumble the ball and a LB for Ned starts running the other way with the ball. Finally he is ran down from behind by a RB for LC-M(no name mentioned)at about the 30 of the Bears. For some reason, the refs blew the play dead so LC-M got the ball back at the 2 or 3 yard line of Nederland. Next play LC-M scores on pass out in the flat to the RB. Fast forward to the last two minutes of the game. LC-M is tailing (can't remember the exact score) by less than a TD. LC-M is driving the ball into Nederland territory reaching the thirty of the Bulldogs with about 25 seconds left in the game. The Bears throw a screen pass to the RB who makes a tremendous run breaking about 4 tackles and scores or at least it appears. The refs threw a flag for a linemen down field. Well see, on a screen pass the linemen can go down field to block as long as the receiver catches the ball behind the line of scrimmage. I've watch video of that play at least fifty time and the receiver or (RB) in this case was two yards behind the line of scrimmage. Reason I watched so many times in because my brother is the RB that caught that pass. Anyway, the penalty was called and the coaching staff decides to run the same play to the other side of the field. Well, this time Nederland was ready and someone laid the leather to my brother knocking him out of the game. The last few seconds tick off and LC-M loses a heart-breaker to Nederland. Next week LC-M played the Mustangs of WO-S. LC-M again runs a screen pass but the ball is over thrown by the QB and the RB crosses the line of scrimmage but catches the ball and scores a TD on what should have been a penalty. Well, WO-S puts a hurting on LC-M by the tune of 42-7. I would have much preferred if the officials got those two calls right. The play vs Nederland and LC-M wins and take the score off the board versus WO-S and LC-M loses 42-0. Of course my wishes don't matter and history is what it is. LC-M loses both games.
  10. Kicker, how could you not mention these 2 great option QB's at LCM. 1. Cazzy Francis, ran for over a 1,000 and passed for another 800. The was voted the Orange County Athlete of the year by the Orange Leader. Played college ball at Arkansas State where after FX his Rt leg in first day of practice his freshman year they moved him to WR where he was All-Conference 2 seasons. Led the nation in punt return average and signed a free agent contract with Tampa Bay making it to the final cut. 2. Richard Pannell, could throw the ball over seventy yards in the air. Was 6-3, 210 and could run a 4.6. I know I was a WR on the team his season year. He signed with Southwestern Louisiana but my dropped passes probably cause him a scholarship to a even better school. He was awesome. Was voted the conference freshman of the year and lead Southwestern to a upset win at Oklahoma State.
  11. Ok casual sports fan, I asked a person I think is a casual college fan to name the location of these schools 1. University of Texas, reply Austin, Texas 2. Baylor, reply in Texas dont remember what city 3. TCU, reply Fort Worth 4. SMU , reply Dallas 5. Tulane, reply I don't know 6. Louisville, reply I dont kow 8. BYU, reply I don't know 9. Creighton, reply I don't know 10. Drake, reply I don't know 11. Air Force , reply I don't know 12. Army, reply I don't know 13. Navy, reply I don't know 14. Stanford, reply I don't know 15. Louisiana Tech, reply in Louisiana, don't know what city 20. Lamar University, reply Beaumont, Texas I don't think changing the name due to casual sports fans not knowing the location of a school is not a great idea. If so there are several here on this list that might need to consider a name change as well.
  12. St Gregory's is located in Oklahoma, near Tulsa. I think you would be suprised by the number of people at BYU that are aware of the location of Lamar University. One of their alum is a news anchor for a local TV station.
  13. The name has changed from Lamar Tech to Lamar University. I perfer the current name but would support a name change if it better suited the needs of the university and would have a financial impact. I do not like the name Southeast Texas State University. I think the University of Southeast Texas sounds much better and they could use the initals UST if needed. Just my opinion.
