  1. with his .235 average, sounds like a bright future : I was never refrring to his fielding I was referring to his lack of offense. He'll never be much if anything more than a .250 hitter with 5-6 HR and maybe 10 SB, those are stats for a role player not someone you expect to play every day, he strikes out far too much, he's not a contact hitter. This is his 4th year in the bigs... if he hasnt caught on by now chances are that he wont.
  2. the Astros should be completely blown up and re-done. The problem is no one wants anyone the Astros have. So they cant even be buyers for a "possible" but no where near likely playoff run. They need hitting and pitching. But who can you afford to trade? Berkman wont be dealt because he is a Houston guy, Rice ex if for no other reason. Lee just got that huge deal. You cant think about trades just because you're an Astro fan it has to work for BOTH teams and if you were the GM of another major league team who on the roster would you want? Outside of Berkman, Lee and Pence, there is not a starting player for Houston worth a major league pitcher on the roster. And the same holds true pitching wise if you tried to deal from the pitching staff. The only pitcher worth trading for would be Oswalt and you know that one isn't going to happen. There is not another pitcher on the roster worth an EVERYDAY player. You might trade someone for some pinch hitter spare part but no one that would really help their team. It's time to put down the Astro kool-aid and realize they're not any good this year. Biggio should be made into a coach 5 seconds after his 3000th hit never to play again, but would still be a valuable asset as a coach or manager. Ensberg should be flat out released, the same goes for Jason Lane and Chris Burke.
  3. I was fine with the title of the thread but the journalism integrity of whoever wrote it should be highly questioned. A dominant force??? Get real. Duke is a force, Carolina is a force, Florida is a force, Kansas is a force, Georgetown is a force, UCLA is a force, aggy not so much. So he cut and pasted it no big deal, lets add a poll on where it was cut and pasted from..... a) the battalion texags.com because no credible journalist for a real news outlet would refer to them as a force so it must be one the two sources above.
  4. maybe an up and coming program but doesnt it make sense to at least make a final four in school history before calling yourselves a "dominant force"
  5. I dont think they are better than the Bird era Celts, Magic led Lakers, or the Bulls with Jordan/Pippen. The Spurs are good but no better than those teams, pretty easy for the fresh prince of the riverwalk to say that since it is something that can never be proven decisively. But my opinion, no.
  6. out 4-8 weeks....any lineup change has to be a boost offensively since he was only hitting .228 and spare the fielding comments after his 2 errors this afternoon priot to the injury
  7. in a related story the team ERA just jumped up 3 runs per game when he pitches
  8. and also vaunted free agent pitcher Chan Ho Park, that should increase the opoosition's offense though they sent him to AAA, but you wouldnt think they signed him to keep him in Round Rock, so soon he'll be in Houston giving up home runs better than Light Em Up Lidge
  9. Got woken up this morning had to bring my wife her blood pressure meds at work and was listening to 610am talking about the ratings being down in the tank for the finals. One caller called in close to 9am and said it's NOT that the teams play this "great defense" but that the players today simply can't hit a 15-18 foot jump shot which I agree with. Are they better athletes today, yes. Better basketball players, no. And to take it one step further I think basketball as a sport has turned off the average white fan, and like it or not the majority of people with disposable income who could go to these games are white-collar predominately white working people, not all but the majority there of who aren't part of come corporate ticket deal. And if you look thru the stats as I did when I got home of the top 100 scoring leaders in the NBA this year, only 5 are true American white players. If you count Steve Nash (he is Canadian) that makes 6. The other 5 are Mike Miller from Memphis who was 37th at 18.5ppg in a small market, Kirk Hinrich from Chicago 56th at 16.6, Wally Szczerbiak from Boston who is by far at the tail end of his career only played in 32 games but averaged 15.0 placing him 69th, Kyle Korver from Philadelphia 14.4 ranking 74th and Mike Dunleavy 97th at 12.8. You could make the argument that Hinrich is the only one who plays for a major market team in the Bulls. But when there are only 5 out of the top 100 and 1 in the top 50 (Miller) the average white male doesnt relate to the sport anymore. Yes the European players may be better than the players coming out of college but that doesnt mean the population relates to them. When basketball was at its peak to me going back about 20 years, you had Bird (granted I never liked him) and his teams going to the playoffs and finals constantly, after him Detroit was the big deal and though Laimbeer was never a premier player people knew who he was. Chicago finally took over in the east and then look at the teams they faced in the west the Lakers were the Lakers, Phoenix had Dan Majerle, Utah had John Stockton. The Bulls themselves had John Paxson and Steve Kerr. When you add all that together with bad fundamental basketball, is it really any wonder that ratings are in the tank??
  10. Wonder how all those Budweiser swilling Junior fans are going to react to Gordon now that they will be teammates. As a Hendrick fan I hate this because I think Junior is nothing more than a gravy train off of his dad's name. You can't tell me he doesnt have the resources and budget with having Bud as his sponsor, so his budget is as high as anyone in the sport. He's just an offspring with a name, no real talent. To put it in football terms he is Chris Simms.
  11. pass the no-doz this game is making me sleepy. 64-49 end of the 3rd....now I remember why I quit watching basketball about 15 years ago, they can claim its good league wide defense all they want, the truth is its guys who cant hit a simple 15-18 foot jumper
  12. not saying it is right nor it is fair but Texas does tend to get a pass from the voters due to all of the national championships they have won in the sport and that they are still a very competitive program
  13. horns lost 9-6, the Dell Diamond curse continues, couldnt advance last year out of Dell nor this year, hopefully next year be back at the Disch if they get the renovations done
  14. Horns blow it open in the 8th hanging a 4 spot to go up 8-2 going to the 9th
  15. Chais Fuller hits a 2 run homer in the 6th, putting Texas back on top 3-2 top 7
  16. Horns up 1-0 top 3, Russell hits another bomb his 28th
  17. its not just their hitting, the pitching sucks. Woody Williams is a bust, the only real starter on the team is Oswalt, and the bullpen isnt much better. What could they have gotten for Lidge the year after the Pujols blast? And if you are another major league team who is on the roster that you want? They're not dealing Berkman, Lee, Pence or Oswalt, but outside of those 4 who would you want to plug in as an everyday player to give up something tangible?
  18. nice effort but how do you put Pistol Pete at #10 behind JJ Redick, Mayberry could stroke it him and Todd Day both for Arky. Dennis Scott is good one, and Glen Rice in his Michigan days. Or Chris Jackson in his LSU days. Mookie Blaylock and Tim McAlister from Oklahoma circa late 80s.
  19. i read a story a couple of years ago that baseball involves on average only about 20 minutes of physical exertion with all the time in between pitches and all
  20. if it could be done one for one it's a deal with all t-mac's back problems it would have to be considered
  21. A&M did not name the mascot the name Bevo dates back to a "near beer" from the early 1900s
  22. can't really say much except congratulations on their first MEN'S title since tennis 2001 and congrats on all those women's sports titles considering how ironic that is since the ags fought hard to keep women out of their school for decades. Now their women carry their athletic department, but at least they have been succesful at keeping their tradition of men only cheerleaders and didnt the atm yearbook used to be called "The Longhorn" and while we're at it, in the words of 'saw varsity's horns off" they openly refer to Texas as varsity, so does that make atm the JV??
