  1. Kelly............1  2  3 Lumberton....0  0  0 Kelly goals: Yasmine Afshar, Mary Ellen Zummo and Teilor Long Kelly assists: Lauren Zeto and Zuri Prince Kelly saves:Chelsea Reid(2) Kelly record: 9-2-1(this was a scrimmage and did not count in standings) On a brisk night, Lumberton was impressive in their first action of the year. This scrimmage should really benefit them as they head into this weekend's tournament. Kelly was more organized throughout the game as you would expect since they have been playing for two months due to the offset private school season. Afshar scored on a nice assist from Zeto at the 16 minute mark. The game remianed 1-0 until the 70th minute with neither team mounting much offense. Lumberton played their best soccer at the start of the second half but seemed to tire a little toward the end. Zummo scored a punch in goal on a beautiful chip assist from Prince which glanced off the Lumberton keeper's outstretched arms. With 4:40 left, Long sent a blast to the net from just outside the 18 yard box. Kelly's defense led by Madeline Horning and the Long sisters held Lumberton and their star forward Stowe to 2 shots on goal for the evening.

  3. I apologize for the delinquency of this report. I was ony able to attend one game and then was out of town for the holidays etc. The stats are incomplete except for first game. Kelly advanced to the semifinals with a 3-0 pool record and then lost to a stronger Lafayette St. Thomas Moore squad. FIRST GAME Kelly..........................1  4  5 Shreveport Byrd...........2  2  4 Kelly goals: Zuri Prince(2) Yasmine Afshar(2) Teilor Long Kelly assists:Lauren Zeto, Julie Sherlock, Madeline Horning Kelly saves: Stephanie O'Neal(5) SECOND and THIRD GAMES: Kelly beat LC Barbe 3-0 and St. Louis 3-1 SEMI FINAL game Kelly...................1  0  0 St Thomas Moore..1  2  3 Zuri Prince had the lone Kelly score and Chelsea Reid had 8 saves Kelly season record: 9-2-1
  4. Conner McDonald has commited to McLennan County College in Waco where he will play infield for the Highlanders. MCC is a nice JUCO program which feeds D-1's throughout the state. Conner has worked hard for this opportunity and should have a great senior year. Congratulations to he and his family.
  5. Great job by the girls and Coach Hernandez. Congratulations on a very successful season. You have made Southeast Texas and the Spindletop Club proud.
  6. update please
  7. Mike Hughes has done a tremendous job managing this team, arguably Spindletop Select's most successful, since the girls were in their preteens. The proof is in the pudding. Many of the best soccer players in SE Texas have played for him and it is no coincidence. It takes an enormous amount of time and dedication to put together a top-level team for so many years. All the girls who have played for him have benefited tremendously and owe some amount of their success to him. Great job Coach Mike.  The current Spindletop trainer Jan Van Bevaren is also one of the best and this area is lucky to have someone of his caliber.
  8. 12/03/09 Kelly..................1  1  2 Duchesne...........0  0  0 Kelly goals: Zuri Prince(2) Kelly assists: Jenny Hernandez Kelly saves: Stephanie O'Neal(3) I did not see the game. Kelly obviously played strong defense as the Lady Dawgs secured 2nd place in the first half of district play. Prince scored on a nice cross from Hernandez late in the first half. Prince sealed the game with a long break goal away at the 70 minute mark. 12/07/09 Kelly..............................5  2  7 Lake Charles Barbe...........0  0  0 Kelly goals: Yasmine Afshar(2) Mary Ellen Zummo(2) Zuri Prince, Lauren Zeto, Madeline Horning Kelly assists: Afshar, Prince, Horning Kelly saves: Chelsea Reid, Stephanie O'Neal Kelly record 6-1-1 A rainy, wet, sloppy night. Kelly dominates a team it should have and takes care of business
  9. and ???
  10. Good list, somebody pay quite a bit of attention to SE Texas girls soccer
  11. Kelly won the PNG tournament 2 years ago including a wins over PNG and Dulles Foster, which if I am not mistaken, is a playoff team from Friendswood's district. Kelly started 5 freshman at the time. Last year at the Kelly Winter Classic, Kelly split two game with West Brook which dominated the 23 5A district. In different brackets, Kelly finished 3rd while PNG lost to West Brook in the finals and finished 2nd. Kelly started 7 sophomores and one senior at the time. Injunfan is correct that Kelly has the advantage of starting its season earlier and playing six games before the public school season begins. This apparent advantage is somewhat mitigated by the fact that many girls play club soccer in the Fall. Regardless, the games between Kelly with an enrollment of 225 girls and the annual playoff team from District 23 4A, PNG have been and will be competitive and soccer fans in Southest Texas look forward to the matches. FF, what is the enrollment of Friendswood?
  12. Depends on the classification, of course. Kelly can play with any similarly sized public school or even those twice as large. For a school with 225 girls and a team with no seniors, it can play with most 4A and many 5A teams as well. How many female students are enrolled in Friendswood? From a comparison standpoint, despite their past success, the Lady Mustangs would struggle to compete against the better, larger 5A schools such as FB Austin, Kingwood, Woodlands and Coppell. Also, I have real doubts whether Friendswood could beat Dallas Ursuline, the perennial TAPPS state champion.
  13. Kelly..............2  3  5 St. Pius..........1  0  1 Kelly goals: Zuri Prince(5) Kelly assists: Yasmine Afshar and Caitlin Quinn Kelly saves: Stephanie O'Neal Kelly record: 4-1-1 On offense, Prince, Prince and more Prince. Although the entire team played well against an overmatched Pius team, she was particularly dominate. On a sloppy wet field, Kelly passed well and controlled possesion opening up the field for Prince especially in the second half as they wore down the visitors from Houston. Once again, lots of contribution from from first year players Alyssa Henke, Reegan Long and Catherine Radford.  An important home game against district foe Duchesne on Thursday for control of second place. Congratulations Lady Dawgs.
  14. Gabe,     How many football, basketball and baseball games have you seen? Soccer is the same way. After you watch enough games to appreciate the rules, strategy and skills required, it is as enjoyable as any other athletic contest. It took me a couple of hundred games through youth soccer but I'm there. Never too late to broaden your sports horizon.
  15. Kelly...............................................3  3  6 Incarnate Word Academy(Houston)......0  0  0 Kelly socres: Zuri Prince(4)Jenny Hernandez, Caitlin Quinn Kelly assists: Yasmine Afshar(2)Madeline Horning(2) Kelly record: 3-1-1 A cool, windy night although the wind was not a factor. Kelly dominated from the start. Afshar and Lauren Zito maneuvered the ball into the offensive end all night. Hernandez scored an early first goal and Prince scored 3 of her 4 goals in the second half. Horning and Taylor Long led a suffocating defense which limited IWA to one shot on goal. Lots of first year players saw significant playing time which will help this team in the future. Next game is another district foe, St. Pius on December 1st. Congratulations Lady Dawgs
  16. Kelly...............0  0  0 St Agnes.........2  2  4 Kelly saves: Stephanie O'Neal(6) Kelly record; 2-1-1 After tying their match last week, this game answered the question of which team is better. It is good for a maturing Kelly squad to play a game such as this to see where they need to be. St. Agnes is a classy, well-coached team.
  17. Kelly............................1  2  3 Lake Charles St. Louis.....1  0  0 Kelly goals: Claire Dykeman, Yasmine Afshar, Mary Ellen Zummo Kelly assists: Madeline Horning, Zuri Prince Kelly saves: Stephanie O'Neal(4) Chelsea Reid(3) Kelly record: 2-0-1 Another beautiful Southeast La. night. St. Louis has a nice field in good shape. It is a soccer school with large sign of past championships. The Lady Saints scored 3 minutes into the game and were then held scoreless for the remaining 77 minutes. At 25 minutes, Dykeman intercepted a kick for a rebound and took it 1/3 of the field for a touch shot past a charging goalie. Just after half, on a Kelly corner, Horning had beautiful set kick to the front of the goal which Afshar headed to the net. Kelly out-passed and out-pressured St. Louis in the second half. The last score was a left-footed assist from Prince to freshman Zummo. Kelly opened their season with 3 road games including 2 of the toughest games it will have in the regular season. Teilor Long had a really good game at fullback. It is fun to watch the young freshman and sophomores growing in confidence. Congratulations Lady Dawgs.
  18. Kelly...........0  1  1 St. Agnes....0  1  1 Kelly goal: Zuri Prince Kelly assists: Caitlin Quinn Kelly saves: Stephanie O'Neal(6) Kelly record: 1-0-1 The St. Agnes field was under repair so the game was played on the Strake Jesuit practice field. It is small and was poorly marked which affected both teams and slowed the game. The game was evenly matched in the first half although Agnes had 5 corners. In the second half, Agnes had the wind and spent more time in their offensive end and took more shots. Kelly's freshman goalie, O'Neal did a great job. Madeline Horning and the Long sisters frustrated Agnes all afternoon with good positioning. Prince broke through at 60 minutes on a cross from Quinn. Agnes kept pressuring and tied the game with 3 minutes left. It was a highly competitive affair, vastly different from many of the Kelly matches with Agnes in the past. Due to a scheduling quirk, the teams meet again next Tuesday at Kelly. It will be interesting to see if this is a turning of the tide or an aberration. Congratulations Lady Dawgs
  19. Dykeman plays the forward position which receives the most stat notoriety but understates the other equally valuable parts of a team. She has a lot of talented teammates. Ideally, there would be other recognizable statistics to account for the great defensive plays by defenders such as Madeline Horning and Teilor Long and midfield decisions by Yasmine Afshar and Zuri Prince. These contributions and those of others all result in placing the ball to a forward in scoring position and just as importantly, preventing the other team from scoring.
  20. Kelly...........................5 3 8 Lake Charles Barbe........0 0 0 Kelly goals: Claire Dykeman(3)Caitlin Quinn(2)Lauren Zeto, Zuri Prince, Mary Ellen Zummo Kelly assists: Dykeman(3)Yasmine Afshar, Anna Katherine Wied, Jenny Hernandez A beautiful weather night at the nicest high school soccer complex in which we play. Barbe has a great high school facility with a field in excellent shape. Technically, this was a scrimmage under La. rules but played under game conditions with referees and score kept and the maximum time played under La. regulations. It was a pretty lopsided event as the score reflects. On one hand you could consider Kelly young with no seniors on the team, on the other, they return nine starters, five of whom are now three year starters. Reality check next week with Lake Charles St. Louis and St Agnes on the schedule. Both schools usually have outstanding teams and I don't believe Kelly has ever beaten Agnes.
  21. I see many fine players on these lists. Congratulations to all of them. As with any exclusive selection in any sport, there is always going to be some disagreement. If these discussions help generate more interest in area soccer, then that is a positive. In all fairness to Mr. Clark, he covers a number of sports and soccer is not the top of the Bmt. Enterprise's focus. He is undoubtedly spread thin and could not possibly have seen all these teams play. And, even if he did, it was probably a single game or very few. I am sure there are other players who are not on the team or honorable mention for whom a comparison could be made or a position taken that they should be listed. He tried to do the best he could. In my limited experience, perception of a player's abilities often varies depending on the observer's perspective.
  22. Hey FF, to the victor go the spoils(or bragging rights). Scoreboard and all that. Congrats to FW Now, how about a new topic for a scouting report on the other teams in the state tournament and your predictions?
  23. I assume Kelly players were considered since several were named as honorable mention and some have made it in the past. Don't know what the criteria is but difficult to say those athletes on the team didn't deserve it. They all had fine seasons and should be proud. Congratulations. On the girls side, I note that many of those on the team and honorable mention are a few juniors and mostly sophomores who have played with Mike Hughes' Spindletop 93 team. For many years, he has successfully managed perhaps the most consistent and best club in Southeast Texas.
  24. The score indicates they lost to a very good team. No shame it that. They had a great season and all the girls should be proud of their accomplishments. I hope most of them will continue to play in the Spring and Fall.
  25. It is pretty well established that college coaches primarily recruit from club teams. As FF notes, they can see more of the players who may interest them and watch them play against talent that is superior to most high school teams. They may attend a few high school games to observe a player who interests them if it is local but their travel budgets and time is better utilized going to where the best collection of talent is located such as club tournaments. Typically, the higher the level of play, the more coaches who will attend. I think it is important for kids(young men and women) to play for their high school. These programs provide some lessons and experiences which can not be gained at the club level. I completely disagree with clubs not allowing or discouraging kids from their high school programs. On one hand, club players tend to be in better condition and have higher skills which reduces the risk of injury. On the other, the more you play, the more opportunity for injury and it will happen some time. That fact is true of all sports and their are life lessons to be learned from overcoming injury as well. Also, athletes need to be careful about overextending themselves. It is also true that injuries occur more often to a tired athlete with tired legs. Frequently, an athlete may play club and high school soccer as well as other high school sports; again, thereby increasing the risk of putting too much stress on themselves. To SETXGAL, I would point out that statistically, girls suffer ACL injuries at a rate 7X greater than boys and concussions incurred by girls are something like 10X the rate of those suffered by boys. I quote these figures from the book "Warrior Girls" which I recommend if you have a daughter who is interested in college soccer.
