  3. Lady ’Cats survive Lady Horns, 57-52 Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader ORANGEFIELD — If Hamshire-Fannett is the fourth best team, first-year Orangefield Coach Chris Jost is very impressed with District 21-3A already. The Lady Longhorns gave the Lady Bobcats all they could handle Friday night before Orangefield was able to pull out a 57-52 victory. The win pushed Orangefield to 14-9 overall and 5-0 in the district standings while Hamshire-Fannett falls to 14-7 on the year and 2-3 in the district loop. Hamshire-Fannett took a 41-39 lead late in the third period and only trailed 43-41 heading into the fourth. Orangefield went 8-for-12 from the free throw line in the game’s final minutes to secure the victory. “Hamshire-Fannett came ready to play,†Jost said. “They knew what we wanted to do and they attacked it. They gave us everything we wanted tonight. If that is the fourth best team in this district, it is going to be tough from here on out. It is going to be interesting.†Senior guard Kaylin Little scored a team-high 18 points to go with four steals while junior Jessica Weldon finished with 15 points, four steals and three assists. Allie Beach aded 12 points and nine-critical rebounds. Senior Laura Riddick added seven rebounds and three steals in the victory while Olivia Wagner put in three steals, three assists and three rebounds. Aimee Scales added a nice block, four rebounds and three steals off the bench. Hamshire-Fannett dominated the boards early in the contest by holding a 22-10 rebounding margin at the break. Orangefield was able to close the gap in the second half as Hamshire-Fannett out-rebounded the Lady Bobcats 34-28. The Lady Bobcats went up 34-26 at the break before the Lady Longhorns’ Kendra Wright caught serious fire in the third to help close the gap. Wright scored 10 of her game-high 21 points in the third. “Wright is a great ball player,†Jost said. “We kept leaving her open and she kept draining shots. They (H-F) will definitely be tough at their place the next go around.†The Lady Bobcats started out hot from the floor hitting 4-of-5 three-pointers in the first period as they built a 18-16 lead heading into the second. Little and Weldon each had two of the four three-pointers. Orangefield finished 19-for-56 from the field while Hamshire-Fannett was 20-for-47. The Lady Bobcats’ defense caused 27 turnovers while Orangefield gave the ball away 17 times. Hamshire-Fannett’s Brittney Cooper finished with nine points and seven rebounds while Kayla Dotson added seven points and nine rebounds. Orangefield will travel to face West Orange-Stark on Tuesday. In an upset in District 21-3A, Silsbee downed No. 4 Hardin-Jefferson 73-68 to push Orangefield into sole possession of first place in the standings.

  10. Nederland comes from behind to beat LC-M By Orange Leader Sports The Orange Leader NEDERLAND — A week ago the Bulldogs wheels came off in an 18-point second half let down to Little Cypress-Mauriceville who went on to beat Nederland in overtime at the Barbers Hill Tournament. In Friday night’s rematch and District 22-4A contest, the tables turned and the Dogs had their vengence. Nederland was down by as much as 18 with three minutes to play before halftime. The Dogs rallied to close the game to eight before the break and then went on to a 58-51 victory in the Dog Dome, improving their district mark to 2-1 on the season. With the win, Nederland also moves to 12-9 overall and will square off with Dayton in the Dog Dome on Tuesday night at 7:30. Trailing 26-18 at the break, Nederland’s Chris Hammond went nuts in the second half to lead the Bulldogs to its crucial victory. Hammond led all players with 30 points. He hit three of his four 3-pointers in the second half and shot 6-of-7 from the free throw line in the fourth quater. All English could really say about Hammond’s performance was that big time players simply make big time plays. Hammond scored a bucket near the end of the first quarter to cut the Bears’ lead to 12-7. Hammond went down hard on the shot with a knee injury that caused him to miss the rest of the first quarter and nearly all of the second period. When Hammond returned, Nederland was in the midst of self distruction, trailing 26-8. But the Dogs spirits were lifted when Hammond stepped back on the floor. The Bulldogs scored the final 10 points of the second quarter, highlighted by 3-pointers from Evan Fitch and Hammond. Nederland kept rolling at the start of the third period. Hammond scored the first points, striking from 3-point land again cut the score to 26-21. He hit another three just two minutes later to cut the score to 30-26. Then Hammond hit again with 3:10 left in the third period to give Nederland its first lead since the opening bucket of the game. Hammond’s third tre gave the Dogs a 33-32 advantage. The Bears did not go away, however. LC-M tied the game at 37-37 with 6:44 to play in the contest and then took the lead when C.J. Champine nailed a three of his own at 5:49 to take a 40-37 advantage. The lead changed hands two more times before Nederland grabbed it for good when Buddy Cooper pushed the score to 43-42 after hauling in a rebound and sticking in the put back bucket. Cooper’s shot was the first two points of a 10-0 Nederland run that gave the Dogs an overwhelming 51-42 lead. The Bears responded with a 9-4 run, capped off by a score from Kevin Cooper that cut Nederland’s lead to 55-51; but that’s as close as LC-M would come as Hammond converted three more points from the charity stripe to close the game out. The Bears won the rebound battle by a margin of 29-27 and had four players in double-digits. Justin Kinsley led the way with 17 for the Bears. He was followed by Cooper and Champine, who both had 12, and Dallas Bean dropped in 10 points. Hammond was the only Bulldog in double digits but Jordan Pitts and Cooper both scored six while Fitch scored five points.
