Lamar Escapes Lake Charles With 5-4 Win Cardinals score five runs in the last three innings May 15, 2008 LAKE CHARLES, La. - Lamar scored five runs in the last three innings, including the eventual game-winner on a Nik Gumeson pinch-hit sacrifice fly in the ninth as the Cardinals defeated McNeese State 5-4 at Cowboy Diamond Thursday. Lamar improved to 30-21 overall and 18-10 in the Southland Conference while maintaining its half-game lead over Northwestern State - who won 3-2 at Central Arkansas - in the race for the East Division crown. The Cardinals tied their season-high with 13 runners left on but it wasn't until the seventh inning when they started to get some results from their base runners. Tyler Link walked on four pitches and Brian Taylor singled to left to open the inning. Steven Tucker then snapped an 0-for-3 night with a two-run triple to left center before scoring on Travis Dunson's single to right center. Dunson scored to make it 4-1 Lamar on Chris Dunkin's double. But McNeese, who took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, responded and tied the game at 4-4 with three in the bottom of the eighth. Mace Hebert and Sam Merrill each singled and then scored on Taylor Freeman's double into the corner in left. Freeman moved to third on a sac bunt and scored on Nick Eubanks' single back up the middle. Jeff Vickers led off the ninth with a double to the wall in left and advanced to third on Jared Hill's pinch-hit sac bunt - his first of the year. Gumeson followed an intention walk to Dunkin with a fly ball to deep right field that allowed Vickers to come home easily. The win was number 1,099 for Lamar head coach Jim Gilligan and the school's 26th season with at least 30 win in the last 33 years. Tim Erickson (7-2) earned the win in relief after replacing Brian Sisk with no outs in the eighth. Sisk struck out three and scattered eight hits with three coming to the final three batters he faced. Erickson also struck out three. Justin LeBleu (2-4) took the loss after 1.2 innings of work. He was the fourth McNeese pitcher used. The Nos. 2-4 hitters for Lamar combined to 8-for-19 with four runs scored and three driven in. Dunson was 3-for-5 and extended his hitting streak to seven games. Tucker was 2-for-5 with his first triple of the year and a pair or RBI. Lamar won for the fourth-consecutive time over MSU and has now won 15 of the last 18 meetings. The final two games of the three-game set will be played at Vincent-Beck Stadium in Beaumont. Friday's game is set for 6:30 p.m. Lamar right-hander Brian Needham (3-4, 6.39) will oppose righty Jonathan Conrad (1-6, 9.05).

BC, Jasper done talking - time to play Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader BRIDGE CITY — The time to talk is over for the Bridge City Cardinals and Jasper Bulldogs. The day has come and just hours after this story its the paper, the two teams will be on the field in Nederland for the Class 3A Region III regional quarterfinals at 7:30 p.m. Casey Jackson can’t stop talking about tonight’s game, Jaden Dillon has found being in a classroom all day a very tough task and Matt Hicks can’t describe how the Cardinals have been able to play their best when it matters most. Rest assured, all three could be big parts to the puzzle for the Cardinals to move on and face either Carthage or Hutto next week. “It’s thrilling,†Jackson said. “Every time I talk to Jaden in class, our hearts start racing. Of course we knew we would see Jasper in district but we wanted to face them again in the playoffs. We want to give them a taste of their own medicine.†It is well known the Bulldogs knocked the Cardinals out in three games last year in the regional finals on their way to a state championship. This season the Cardinals were 2-0 against the Bulldogs on their way to a District 21-3A championship. “We have a lot of respect for the Bulldogs,†Hicks, who was the winning pitchers in both games, said. “Everyone on that team can hit and play defense plus their pitching is top of the line. They went on to dominate the state tournament last season so you have to respect that team. I always say a hit here or a hit there could have changed both games this season.†The Cardinals are no stranger from playing in Nederland as Bridge City often plays in the Nederland Bulldog Baseball Tournament each season. Dillon has certainly had success in Nederland, especially earlier this year. Dillon no-hit the Sulphur, La. Tors while striking out nine batters in a 6-0 Bridge City victory. “We are always confident in Nederland and always seem to do real well on that field,†Hicks said. “We are going to try to think like this is just another game. We cannot get too excited if we make an error and we can’t let up if we get a lead.†Jackson believes the Cardinals are in a great position to move on to next week’s regional semi-finals. “This is our year and we want to give them a taste of their own medicine,†Jackson said. “It is going to be great game from both teams. it will be a well-fought game. We are rivals even though we have really only been playing a lot over the last two seasons. Both teams know when we play each other — you better bring your A game.†Dillon is far from worried about having to win just one game instead of getting three chances to eliminate Jasper. “It really is just about who plays the best that day,†Dillon said. “It is kind of like Game 2 against Needville since we were down 0-1 but with a little more pressure. We wanted to meet this team in the playoffs and now we want our revenge.†Hicks wants the same revenge even after beating the Bulldogs on the mound twice this year. “Everyone on this team is very excited,†Hicks said. “After last year and it just being one game this season, everyone better be ready. We want to prove we can beat them in the playoffs and this time we only have to do it once. It might make it a lot easier because they really are a great team. I really can’t explain what it is about big games that brings out the best in a player. You just become more focused and everything seems to fall into place.â€

Prosecutor: Barkley faces felony if he doesn't pay back $400K LAS VEGAS -- Retired NBA star Charles Barkley will face criminal charges if he doesn't repay a $400,000 gambling debt to a Las Vegas casino, a prosecutor said Thursday. "We're in the process of sending Mr. Barkley notice that we're considering filing a criminal complaint," Clark County District Attorney David Roger said. "He'll have an opportunity like anybody else to make restitution to the hotel." The story was first reported by the Las Vegas Sun on its Web site. The posh Wynn Las Vegas casino alleges in a civil complaint filed Wednesday in Nevada state court that Barkley failed to repay four $100,000 casino markers, or loans, he received last Oct. 18 and 19. "To date, and despite repeated demands, Barkley has refused to repay the $400,000," the complaint said. Barkley is a basketball analyst for Turner Network Television who has made no secret of his gambling over the years. His agent in New York did not immediately respond to messages seeking comment, and a TNT spokeswoman in Atlanta declined comment. Wynn Las Vegas spokeswoman Dorothy Land also declined comment, citing ongoing litigation. Barkley, 45, played 16 seasons for the Philadelphia 76ers, Phoenix Suns and Houston Rockets. He was named MVP in 1993 and was an 11-time NBA All-Star. Barkley also played on the USA Olympic "Dream Team" in 1992 and 1996. Barkley estimated during a May 2006 interview with ESPN that he'd gambled away about $10 million over the years. "Do I have a gambling problem? Yeah, I do have a gambling problem," Barkley said. "But I don't consider it a problem because I can afford to gamble." He said he never bet on basketball, and only bet in casinos. He called it a bad habit that he intended to continue.
