  10. Hargraves Named Bullard Boys Basketball Coach Hank Hargraves, who has led East Chambers to four straight regional tournaments, has been named the head boys basketball coach at Bullard. Hargraves went 149-58 at East Chambers, which has also won four district titles in the last six years. Hargraves takes over for Ryan Tomlin, who went to Whitehouse after guiding Bullard to a 26-8 record and berth in the regional quarterfinals last season. “I’m excited about being part of this community,†said Hargraves, 30. “I want to come in and add to what coach Tomlin has done for this program. But I don’t want to take anything away from what he’s done.†Bullard, expected to return six players next year, was 121-46 in five seasons under Tomlin.

  16. Eagles overcome slow start in win By Michael Pineda Baytown Sun Published July 11, 2008 For the better part of the first quarter, the Barbers Hill boys’ basketball team looked like it was on siesta. Once they woke up, it was all over for Northeast Christian. The Eagles overcame an early deficit and handled Northeast in a 48-36 win in the third week of action in the Lee College Summer Basketball League. Barbers Hill outscored the Warriors 14-7 in the second quarter and cruised to the win thanks to its defense and outside shooting. Chris Patareau had the hot hand early for Northeast with five points as it jumped out to a 9-2 lead. The Eagles had an answer in Daniel Mitchell who scored five of his own and helped draw his team to within 11-7 at the end of the first quarter. Barbers Hill turned up the pressure with its man-to-man defense and pulled even then ahead of Northeast. Mitchell added six to his tally with Robby Bragg and Richard Minnick each adding 3-pointers to help give the Eagles a 21-18 lead into the half. Momentum proved to be a kind friend for Barbers Hill as it began to put the game away in the third quarter. Ian Hamlin, who had been out with an injury during the first two weeks of league play, drilled a three to help boost the Eagles to a 32-25 lead. George Foreman had several opportunities to keep Northeast in the game, but could not finish off near the basket and struggled with his free throw shooting. His defense and rebounding were a benefit to the Warriors as they closed to 30-25 on a Max Robinson basket. Mitchell answered with a lay-up to make it a seven-point game entering the final frame. Minnick stepped up for Barbers Hill in the final quarter with a couple of 3-pointers as the lead went out to double digits and ended in a 12-point win. Mitchell paced the Eagles with 15 points with Minnick and Bragg each scoring nine. Patareau led the Warriors with 13 points and Robinson scored nine. In next week’s action, Northeast will open against Crosby at 5:30 p.m. Barbers Hill will take on Goose Creek Memorial at 6:30 p.m. and Sterling blue will take on Liberty at 7:30 p.m. Sterling white and Lee will face off in that nightcap at 8:30 p.m.

The South squad led 50-37 early in the second half. The North squad went on a 15-3 run and cut the South led to 53-52. The South would never relinquish the lead, however. Temple’s Kaetlyn Murdoch kept the South ahead by dominating the defensive boards. Murdoch, a University of Denver signee, recorded seven of her eight rebounds in the second half. Martin’s last 3-pointer with 1:50 remaining gave the South some cushion as its lead rose to 68-60. Elonu added a layup following a North turnover to give the South a 70-60 lead. Rockwall’s Shelby Adamson scored 13 of her team high 15 points in the second half to keep the North squad close. 19. THOUGHT I WOULD RE POST THIS SINCE IT JUST SUDDENLY DISAPPEARED! Foreman back home with Mustangs as QBs’ coach Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader WEST ORANGE — Toby Foreman knows the system and knows what it takes to be a West Orange-Stark Mustang. Foreman is back at West Orange-Stark High School as quarterbacks’ coach and head track/cross country coach. Foreman was at Baytown Lee High School last season and worked under Dick Olin. When an opening came up back at WO-S, Mustangs Athletic Director Dan Hooks did not have to twist Foreman’s arm too hard to fill it. “I gladly came back,†Foreman said. “Coach Hooks and I stayed in contact throughout the year I was gone. There was a two month period when I was interviewing for a few other jobs but then when I realized Coach Hooks had a spot, I told the other places where I would be this year and in the future. This past year while I was gone, there is no telling how many phone calls I got wondering when I was coming back. “This is my home. My dad (Mark) coached here and I grew up in the blue and silver.†Foreman is returning to a team which went 11-2 a year ago and lost in the regional semi-finals to Waco La Vega, a game in which Foreman was on the sidelines to take in the action. The Mustangs are the heavy favorites in District 21-3A this season and bring back six starters on offense, including senior quarterback Ortavious Hypolite. “I had a chance to work with Hypo on the junior varsity level,†Foreman said. “We have a good relationship already. He has great leadership and I look forward to being his mentor. Also there is Reggie Garrett a sophomore and I’ll be around him for the next three years. Trey Franks is our other backup so you can’t go wrong with those three guys.†Foreman also takes great pride in the Mustangs track program. “When I went to school, we won the district all four years,†he added. “Track can sometimes be overlooked. My expectations are always high for our track program. This should be a real special group of kids and we want to bring the whole thing home.†Now that Foreman is back, do not expect him to go anywhere anytime soon if is plan for the future stays on the right path. “In the long run when Dan and Cornell (Thompson) move on, there needs to be someone to keep the program going like it has for so long,†Foreman said. “I have been around this place as a ballboy, a player and now as a coach. I know the process and I want to keep it moving in the direction it is. I don’t plan on going anywhere. This is where I want to retire because I want to be head coach one day. I know the ends and outs and I have seen it from every angle.†Foreman credits Hooks, his father Mark, Thompson, Barry Norton and Jasper’s Thomas Brooks as his mentors in the coaching business. WO-S opens the season Aug. 29 with a road trip to face the Nederland Bulldogs. The Mustangs start district play Oct. 10 against the Silsbee Tigers.
