  6. Gamble Stars work overtime By Dave Rogers The Port Arthur News West Orange-Stark’s Richard Netherly and Jamal Fenton of Houston Chavez provided fireworks, Ozen’s Kris Richard and two timeout-loving head coaches provided plenty of drama, and Kountze’s C.J. Busby brought down the curtain in the most exciting Port Arthur News/Gamble Game yet. Busby put back a Ryan Donahoe miss with one second left in the second overtime to give the 11 finalists for the 2007 James Gamble Awards a thrilling 89-87 win over the South Texas Slam before a near-capacity crowd at the Carl Parker Center. “My whole intention was to get my teammate an open shot by any means necessary,†Donahoe, the Class 3A player of the year for Hardin-Jefferson, joked about his late miss that set up Busby’s game-winner. “I aimed it to the back of the glass where Busby was waiting.†Donahoe’s was the first shot of the second three-minute overtime. Gamble, the coaching legend and event namesake, had his team of Southeast Texas’ shooting and dribbling stars hold the ball for the entire period. The South Texas Slam, a team featuring some of the top talent in Houston and getting help from a quartet of locals, was content to sit back in its zone while Donahoe stood with the ball near midcourt, and the Gamble Stars readied for their one shot at avoiding a third OT. “We were already being outrebounded when we lost Richard Netherly,†Gamble said of the 6-7 senior who led the locals with 18 points and nine rebounds before fouling out with 11 seconds left in the first overtime. “After we lost Richard, we lost our inside presence. We felt it would be to our advantage to play for one shot.†The Gamble Stars ran their record to 4-0 in this annual game, a warmup to tonight’s 6:30 p.m. James Gamble Awards Banquet, which will honor the area’s top two high school players, Mr. Inside and Mr. Outside. Finalists for Mr. Outside include Donahoe, East Chambers’ Tramain Thomas, West Brook’s Roman Antoine, Memorial’s J’Covan Brown and Richard, who is also last year’s winner. Mr. Inside finalists are Netherly, Busby, West Brook’s Jeremy Pitre, Terrence Jones of Silsbee and Ozen’s Jacoby Joseph. Five Gamble Stars scored in double figures, with the 6-6 Busby following Netherly with 17 points. Richard and Brown scored 12 points each and Donahoe finished with 11. Jones scored eight points, Antoine five, Joseph four and Thomas two. Adrian Fontenot of Baytown Sterling led the Slam Stars with 20 points and 14 rebounds. Fenton, the super soph point guard, scored 19 and 6-10 Anthony Jones, a junior at Houston Yates, added 15 points to his eight rebounds. Memorial High senior Jeffrey Joseph, playing for the Slam, scored nine points and grabbed eight rebounds. Kelly High junior Kheeston Randall contributed seven points and three boards to the Slam. The team coached by Marks, an associate of Memorial High head coach Terrul Henderson when Henderson was running a Houston AAU program, won the battle of the boards 66-58.

  8. Bordelon heads solid Memorial performances at 21-5A meet By Tom Halliburton The Port Arthur News HUMBLE -- They may seem as baby steps compared to Port Arthur's remarkable past but Memorial's boys tracksters could gain more momentum from this week's accomplishments. The Titans of coach Darrell Granger sported one of two boys Golden Triangle gold medalists at the District 21-5A track and field championships and they amazingly outscored West Brook's program for a fifth-place team finish. Memorial garnered 71 points, reaching the 5A regional level in two relays and three individual events. The Lady Titans of coach Sandra Bradford finished sixth with 29 points and qualified for regionals in only two individual competitions. Kingwood stormed to the team titles in both boys and girls divisions. The deep and tradition-rich Mustangs compiled 151 points to down Baytown Lee at 118 for the boys title. Kingwood's girls proved even more dominant this year, compiling 219 points and nearly doubling runner-up Baytown Sterling's 114. Turner Stadium also will host the top three finishers in each of these events at the regional meet Apr. 27-28. This is still a far cry from the success level established by Hall of Fame coach LeRoy Leopold in Memorial's first three years but it's a positive continuation of encouraging numbers in Granger's second season. Those numbers first began to surface last month at the Texas Southern Tiger Relays. Sam Bordelon got to wake up, knowing he won Port Arthur's lone district championship in track and field. Bordelon cleared 6-2 in the high jump on Tuesday to surpass three Baytown Lee contestants at 6-0. West Brook also won one boys and one girls individual event. Both WB district champs established new area-best performances in their events with their gold medal performances. Jeremy Blueitt won the boys long jump in 22-8 and Whitney Williams the girls shot put in 38-8. Memorial's girls brought home silver medals in two field events. Junior Terrell Robertson closed out her district meet with a season-best 18-6, still a good ways from the winning leap of 18-11.5 by Baytown Sterling's Kieyana Wright. Robertson's previous 2007 best had been 18-4. Lady Titans' Danielle Smith was second in the shot behind West Brook's Williams with a throw of 37-6. The duo of Craig Bailey and Freddie King soared to second and third in the boys triple jump. Bailey was a silver medalist with a season-best 44-1.5 followed closely by King at 44-0.75. Rashaud Brown continued his strong season in the open quarter by nudging under the 50-second clocking once again. Brown was timed at 49.71, slightly less than a second behind 21-5A champion Steven Tillman from Baytown Sterling at 48.96. Brown was the third-fastest qualifier in Tuesday's prelims with a 49.60. Memorial's relays -- ranked among the area's best all season -- took home silver medals in the 400- and bronze medals in the 800-meter exchanges. The team of Jordan Charles, Patterson Clay, Decovan Gorrer and Brandon Harrison combined for a 42.89, exactly one-half second behind champion Baytown Lee's 42.39. The 800-meter relay squad of Craig Bailey, Jordan Charles, Solomon Delaney and Decovan Gorrer did not challenge Ozen's area lead (1:28.34) but outlegged Kingwood for a regional trip and a third-place time of 1:31.81. Kingwood ran a 1:32.29. Granger and his athletes had to feel the worst for senior hurdler Keary Armour, who qualified third in Tuesday's 300-meter hurdles prelims at 40.21. Armour finished fourth in Thursday's finals with a similar time of 40.20.

  15. Cardinals nab 21-3A track meet Van Wade The Orange Leader ORANGEFIELD — To have a solid track team that wins championships, you have to not only be deep, but talented as well. Bridge City proved just that again Friday at the District 21-3A Track & Field Championships as the Cardinals stormed to the team title with 154 points at Orangefield High School. West Orange-Stark senior Jacoby Franks was a tremendous point recorder for the Mustangs as the standout walked away from the meet with five gold medals after he ran legs on all three first-place relay teams after winning the long jump and triple jump on Wednesday. BC held off second-place Silsbee (143) and WO-S (134) to claim the title. The Hamshire-Fannett Lady Longhorns captured the girls division with 136 points with Silsbee (125) nabbing second and Bridge City (112) third. The Mustangs walked away with all three relay crowns as they prepare for the Class 3A Region III Track & Field Championships that will be held Apr. 27-28 at Humble High School. The 400-meter relay unit of Franks, Dominique Rhodes, Josh Gloston and Earl Thomas won with a season-best time of 41.99 seconds. The same quartet nabbed the 800-meter relay in 1:29.05 and Franks, along with Josh Gloston, Jerald Gloston, Jacoby Franks, and Nick Reed won with a 3:31.15. ‘Our relays, that’s what we hang our bread and butter on,†said Mustang head track coach Toby Foreman. “The kids really feel like they can get out at regionals and make some noise at state. They know they’re capable of big things. We like our chances in the 400 and 800 relays and I wouldn’t be surprised about the 1,600 relay. They came out and accomplished their goals today. Three of them got home at 11:30 p.m. last night from a baseball game and were here bright and early today. We wanted to be real careful with our exchanges and the kids ran extremely well in windy conditions.†As far as Franks’ performance? “It’s got to be extremely rare for one kid to go out and win five gold medals at one district meet,†said Foreman. “I think this could be the first time it’s happened in school history but we’ll have to check. It was just an amazing effort by an amazing kid.†Perhaps the best race at the meet came in the boys 400 meters. Bridge City junior Kevin Young (51.11) nipped both Orangefield’s Caleb Worthy (51.35) and WO-S’ Reed (51.45) in the final 20 meters as all three nabbed regional berths. “I knew it was going to be a trying race,†said Young. “Reed got a little bit ahead of me on that final turn and I was able to kick it in to an extra gear. It was really windy out here today so I feel good about my time. My kick has been really good for me the last few meets and hopefully that will carry over into regionals.†Another big race came in the 200 meters featuring, arguably, Orange County’s top athletes this school season as WO-S senior Thomas (22.36) outlasted Bridge City senior Johnny Dishon (22.46). “I didn’t know if I had enough energy left in me but I was able to pull it out,†Thomas said. “I could feel Johnny (Dishon) behind me and I knew it was going to be close. I don’t think I’ve ever been so tired. This has been a busy week.†Dishon also grabbed a second-place finish in the 100 meters with a time of 11.47, just getting nipped by teammate Cody Mills, who finished with an 11.46. Besides Young and Mills, the Cardinals racked up two more first-place finishes as Logan Stewart claimed the 800 meters in 2:05.56 and Ryan Kelly won the 1,600 meters in 4:51.52. Also landing regional berths included WO-S’ Jerald Gloston in the 800 meters (second, 2:07.20); and Bridge City’s Troy Bolton in the 110-meter hurdles (third, 16.05) and Tim Cude in the 1,600 meters (third, 5:01.47). Bridge City also qualified for regionals in both the 800 and 1,600-meter relays by placing second behind WO-S. The 800 relay foursome included Mills, Paeton Landry, Jerry Landry and Dustin Breaux. The 1,600 quartet included Stewart, Young, Dustin Chappell and David Blackshear. On the girls’ side, one district winning streak stayed intact as Lady Cardinal senior Morgan Broussard won the 800 meters for the fourth consecutive year. She won Friday with a clocking of 2:29.57. “I haven’t ran against some of the girls here today, so I didn’t know what to expect,†Broussard said. “I went out a little different, starting out fast to see what would happen and I really felt good all day. To win this event four years in a row, that’s a very special feeling. It’s something I’ll never, ever forget.†Broussard felt good as well in the 1,600 meters, finishing second behind teammate Erica Garza with a time of 5:55.58. Garza nabbed her second gold at the meet, running a 5:45.81 after capturing the 3,200 meters on Wednesday. WO-S freshman sensation Hannah Mobley continues to shine. Mobley won the 200 meters in 27.35. She was also a leg on the Lady Mustangs’ two second-place finishes in the 400 and 800-meter relays that also consisted of teammates Vanquanisha Jordan, Dominique Riggs and Brittney Scott. “I still can’t believe it’s happened,†Mobley said. “To be a freshman and to win district, it feels really great. I really appreciate all my teammates, who have rooted me on this season, especially the seniors, they’ve been a big help.†Orangefield’s Laura Riddick captured the Bobcats’ lone gold medal of the day when she dazzled in the 100-meter hurdles winning by almost a full second with a 16.33. “
  16. Lamar State Seahawks home for weekend conference games The Lamar State College-Port Arthur softball team will be home this weekend for conference doubleheaders with Paris Junior College on Saturday and Northeast Texas Community College on Sunday. Lamar State (2-24 overall, 1-17 in Region XIV) is looking to break a 16-game losing streak that started March 18 at Navarro College in Corsicana. The Seahawks lost twice Wednesday at Alvin Community College, 10-2 and 9-1. Lamar State head coach Vance Edwards said his team was just a couple of hits away from winning both of those games. “We’re just not getting timely hits,†he said. “We had the bases loaded twice in the first game. The first time, Ashley Lapeyrolerie hit a line drive that the second baseman just managed to snag. The second time, their third baseman corralled a hard grounder to stop us.†Lamar State pitcher/outfielder Brooke Teal had two hits and a run in three times at bat in the first game. Freshman catcher/3rd baseman Shauna Sicotte drove in two runs with a double in the second game. Errors also contributed to the Lady Dophins staying alive in some innings that should have ended earlier, Edwards said. Teal (.283), Lapeyrolerie (.281) and sophomore outfielder Stephanie Sanford (.273) currently lead the Seahawks’ offense. Paris (31-15, 11-7), currently second in the Region XIV East Zone, and Northeast Texas (12-21, 5-13) played Wednesday in Paris, with the home team wining both games, 7-3. This weekend’s games begin at 1 p.m. on Martin Field, 1000 Lakeshore Drive on the Lamar State campus. Admission is free.
