Stroud tied for 6th in New Orleans By Bob West The Port Arthur News AVONDALE, La. — Even an overcooked 7-iron that that kicked into the water and led to a final hole double bogey couldn’t put a damper on Chris Stroud’s spirits Friday at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans. Stroud, who had made back-to-back birdies to pull within one shot of 36-hole leader Mark Calcavecchia, still walked away with a second-round 70 that left him three shots off the lead at 138. Not only had he made his first PGA Tour cut of 2007, he was brimming with confidence. “I got a little too aggressive on the shot into No. 9 (his 18th hole),†he said. “I tried to draw it in and it hooked a little too much, hit on the bank and hopped into the water. But I’m not mad. I’m playing great. I think I have a chance to win the tournament.†Stroud enters round three at the TPC of Louisiana in uncharted waters, locked into a six-way tie for sixth place. When he walked to the final hole Friday, he was in a three-way tie for second. “I’m more focused on all the good shots I hit to move up the leaderboard than that one bad shot,†he said. “I played some really good golf. I’m feeling better and better about my putting. I’m making the ones I’m supposed to be making.†Stroud certainly won’t lack for incentives today and Sunday. A top 10 finish would get him into next week’s Byron Nelson Classic in Dallas, anywhere in the top 25 would lower his number for an upcoming reshuffle of PGA Tour School qualifiers and hanging near the lead will get him some national TV exposure on CBS coverage that begins at 2 p.m. “I’m aiming high and I’m going to continue being aggressive,†Stroud said. “I’m still hitting awesome iron shots but the difference has been the putting. Really, I’m not playing much different than in Houston or earlier events. The success is in the putting.†Most of the excitement in the former Lamar University All-America’s round was packed into the final nine holes (the front nine). He’d started on the back nine, made eight straight pars, then stumbled to a bogey on the par 5, 18th. At the time he was three under for the tournament, and just two shots below the cut line. “I got to No. 1 and I was trying not to worry about the cut and all the other stuff that creeps into your mind,†he said. “I said to myself I was going to start making birdies and that’s exactly what I did.†Did he ever. Over the next eight holes, Stroud poured in five birdies. He went back-to-back at the par 4, 1st and the par 5, second, notched another at the par 4, 3rd, then went back-to-back again on the par 5, 7th and par 4, 8th. By then he’d caught or passed everybody on the leaderboard but Calcavecchia and people in the gallery were starting to ask, “Who is Chris Stroud?†“The birdie at 1 was huge,†he said. “I hit a 3-wood into the first cut and had 120 yards to the pin. The greens were firming up, so I tried to land my wedge about 108. I thought I hit it perfect, but the ball skidded over the green and into thick rough. “I’m standing there thinking ‘I’ve hit two really good shots and I may make bogey.’ But I caught a decent lie and chipped in from about 25 feet. That one got me going.†Stroud got up-and-down from a bunker for his birdie on No. 2, hit a 7-iron to 5 feet for the birdie on 4, knocked in an 18-footer from the fringe for the birdie on No. 7 and stuck a 9-iron to 3-feet for the birdie on 8.â€

Fla. crew lands 1,063-pound mako shark DESTIN, Fla. (AP) -- A 1,063-pound mako shark hooked close to shore in the Gulf of Mexico is being investigated as a possible world fishing record. The Sea Ya Later II was cobia fishing when its crew spotted the 12-foot 6-inch shark Wednesday afternoon between Pensacola Beach and Navarre Beach. The Mother Lode, a 45-foot charter boat, helped bring in the shark. They used flying gaffs to secure the fish and then tied the gaffs to the Sea Ya Later II, which was tilting. "If (the shark) hadn't been as tired as she was, this boat would be sitting on the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico," said Lindsey Stanley, the Sea Ya Later IIs captain, told the Northwest Florida Daily News. After the shark died, it took eight men to pull it aboard the Mother Lode and take it to Destin. The registered weight of 1,063 pounds makes the catch eligible for the world record in the 30-pound line class for a short-fin mako. The class record is a 997-pound, 11-ounce shark caught in Sydney, Australia, in 1995. The largest mako recorded in the all-tackle division was a 1,221 pounder caught in Massachusetts in 2001. "I'm investigating it as a world record," said Jim Roberson, who represents the Panhandle for the International Game Fish Association.

Bears edge past Broncos, 3-2 Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader LITTLE CYPRESS — Baseball can be a funny sport sometimes. The Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears escaped from Don Gibbens Field with a victory Friday night after walking 11 Dayton batters and being struck out nine times themselves at the plate. LC-M made just enough plays in the end and got out with a key 3-2 District 22-4A victory. The win pushed the Bears to 22-4 overall and 9-2 in the district race. Dayton falls to 14-8 and 5-5. After the game LC-M Coach Steve Griffith had nothing but compliments for Dayton starting pitcher Andy Dewey. “We have played two great games against those guys,†Griffith said. “Twice now the games have been great. That guy on the mound is one heck of a player. I can picture him in a Big 12 uniform somewhere next year. In the end our kids did what they had to do to get the win.†After scoring two runs in the bottom of the first, the Bears got the eventual winning run in the bottom of the third as LC-M catcher Jake Rowell kept up his hot hitting with a leadoff single to center. Courtesy runner Phillip Richard then quickly stole second and was moved to third by a missile off the bat of Stefan Cloeren that hit the center field fence. Matt Johnson then brought Richard home with a RBI ground out to second making it 3-1. The Broncos made it 3-2 in the top of the fifth as Dewey walked with one out and then stole his second base of the night to get into scoring position. In all Dayton stole five bases in the contest. LC-M then allowed the Broncos to load the bases on back-to-back walks and it set up Travis Smesny’s RBI fielder’s choice. With the win the Bears stay locked in a first place tie for the district crown with the Port Neches-Groves Indians who beat Lumberton 4-0 on Friday. Also around the district Vidor blanked Beaumont Central 10-0 and Nederlad defeated Beaumont Ozen 5-4. With all the top teams in the district winning on Friday, it sets up a nice showdown in Nederland today at 1 p.m. when the Bears travel to face the Bulldogs. “When I first looked at the schedule, I thought nine wins would be close to getting a team into the playoffs,†Griffith said. “We are getting close to the number of wins we will need. For this team to get in will be very gratifying considering nobody gave them a shot. If we finish 1-and-3 on the year that might secure us a playoff spot. Those teams at the three, four and five spots still have to play each other.†The Bears jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead after the first inning as Kris Hearn belted the first pitch from Dewey to left field for a leadoff single. Tim Barry then drove another Dewey offering into left for back-to-back singles. Rowell then drew a walk on four pitches and Chad Richard was then able to score Hearn on a RBI ground out to third. With two down and the bases loaded again, LC-M starting pitcher Adam Leggett drew a RBI walk scoring Barry. Dewey hurled all six innings for the Broncos on 99 pitches and allowed three hits and two walks to go with his nine strike outs. Leggett went two innings for the Bears and allowed one run on two hits with three walks and one strike out. Dallas Brown then went 2 2/3 innings with one run allowed on no hits with four walks and six strike outs. Tim Barry hurled 2 1/3 innings and gave up no runs on one hit with four walks and two strike outs.
