Bears take down Raiders, 11-3 Van Wade The Orange Leader LITTLE CYPRESS — Playing everybody on Senior Night, long-time Little Cypress-Mauriceville head baseball coach Steve Griffith now has the Bears just one win away from yet another district title as the Bears pounded the Lumberton Raiders 11-3 in District 22-4A action at Don Gibbens Field Tuesday night. The Bears (24-4, 11-2) pounded out 12 hits against three Lumberton (7-17, 2-11) pitchers and also took advantage of six Raider errors and six walks. The Bears can clinch the 22-4A crown by winning on the road against the Vidor Pirates Friday. Vidor currently holds the third-place spot at 8-5 in district, one game ahead of fourth-place Nederland. Port Neches-Groves remains in second with a 10-3 mark and finishes the regular season at Dayton. Nederland, meanwhile, travels to Lumberton. Tim Barry powered the Bears at the plate against the Raiders, going 3-for-4 with a double and two runs batted in and scored twice. Chad Richard was 2-for-4 and drove in two runs, one off a solo home run in the Bears’ seven-run third inning. Phillip Richard also went 2-for-2 and scored twice. The Bears utilized five pitchers in the victory. Starter Ben Jones worked the first three innings while Barry, Taylor Thompson , Aaron Milligan and Steven Maldanado each threw an inning. The quintet combined on a six-hitter, striking out eight and walking five. Maldanado struck out the side in the seventh. The Bears struck for three runs the bottom of the first. Chris Hearn had a leadoff double and scored on a single to left by Barry. After Chad Richard drew a walk, Stefan Cloeren reached on an error on a gounder to third as Barry raced in. Adam Leggett scored Richard with a single to left to up the margin to 3-0. Lumberton answered with a run in the second as Jonathan Walker reached on an error and scored on a single to right by Jacob Wells. Everything went downhill for the Raiders in the bottom of the third as the Bears sent 12 batters to the plate. Richard got it going when he led off with a solo blast off Raider starter Tyler Wilson that sailed over the leftfield wall. After hitting Cloeren with a pitch, Wilson was replaced on the hill by Stephen McDonough. McDonough immediately walked both Matt Johnson and Ben Jones to load the bases. Jon Gunn then put down a superb bunt and Raider first baseman Hunter Howden had problems fielding it as both Cloeren and Johnson scooted in to score to give the Bears a 6-1 edge. Hearn plated courtesy runner Phillip Richard with an RBI groundout. Barry roped an RBI single to score Gunn and a deep Jake Rowell double to right scored Barry for a 9-1 Bear cushion. Chad Richard came around to bat again in the inning and scored Rowell with a single to left. The Raiders made it a 10-2 contest in the fourth as Wells drove in Walker again with a groundout after Walker had reached on a walk. Phillip Richard had a one-out single for the Bears in the bottom of the fourth and made it all the way to third after two Raider throwing errors. He promptly scored on a Gunn groundout to make it 11-2. Howden, who went 3-for-4 at the plate, had an RBI single in the fifth for the Raiders for the last run of the game. -

LOUIS — Ken Griffey Jr. hit his 564th career home run on Tuesday night, breaking a tie with Reggie Jackson for 10th place on the career list. Griffey's first homer of the season was a two-run, fifth-inning shot off Kip Wells that gave the Cincinnati Reds a 5-1 lead over the St. Louis Cardinals. Griffey did not start the previous four games because of diverticulitis, an inflammation of the colon diagnosed about six months ago. Griffey also missed most of the spring schedule while recovering from a broken left hand sustained in December. Griffey also hit his 500th career homer in St. Louis in 2004.
