Hendrick Motorsports & Chevrolet dominates at Richmond RICHMOND, Va. -- Jimmie Johnson led teammate Kyle Busch to a 1-2 finish at Richmond International Raceway on Sunday, the third consecutive victory for Hendrick Motorsports. Hendrick has won seven of the past eight Nextel Cup races and swept all four races in which NASCAR has used its new Car of Tomorrow. Jimmie Johnson passed Kyle Busch on a restart on Lap 382 to win the Crown Royal 400 at Richmond Int'l Raceway. It looked as if Hendrick would finish 1-2-3 for the final 100 laps of the race, as Johnson, Busch and polesitter Jeff Gordon battled for the lead. But Gordon faded over the final 15 laps and gave up third place to Denny Hamlin. Gordon, who won the past two weeks, settled for fourth as Chevrolets took the top four spots in the race that began briefly Saturday night with 12 laps run under caution before it was halted because of rain. It started fresh on Sunday. Johnson, the defending Nextel Cup champion, won for the fourth time this season but first at RIR. The .75-mile track has been among the worst on his resume, with Johnson having scored only one top 10 finish in 15 previous visits. "This means the world to me to win here," Johnson said. "We haven't been that strong here. It reminds me of Indy last year, and we beat a track that's been tough on us. We looked at it as a new opportunity for the team and myself to learn the right setup and for me to learn the right rhythm of the track and had some awesome racing with my teammate." In this year of Hendrick Motorsports, everything is clicking and the competition is admittedly frustrated. "You can argue that Hendrick has all the best drivers," Hamlin said. "It's tough to beat them when they've got four very, very good teams. We've got three good teams, but when you've got four like they have -- all competitive and all running up front every week, the information that they exchange is going to be better." Only Casey Mears, the fourth driver in the Hendrick stable, is struggling. He was wrecked early and finished 18th.

**Breaking news Jeff van gundy to retire**

Van Gundy not stepping down, but future with team unsure Coach has a non-guaranteed season left on his contract, but owner hasn't decided if he will return or be fired Complete Rockets coverage Amid reports that Jeff Van Gundy would not return as Rockets coach, Van Gundy said Sunday he has not decided to step down and Rockets owner Leslie Alexander said he has not reached any decision about Van Gundy's future. Van Gundy has one non-guaranteed season remaining on his contract. Told that there has been speculation that he would fire Van Gundy, Alexander said, "That's totally false. "There is absolutely no truth to that. That's false, totally false. That decision has not been made." Van Gundy strongly denied he had reached a decision. He has often said that the decision about next season was not only the team's, but said Sunday that he has not decided to step down. "I haven't even thought about that yet," Van Gundy said. "It's just 12 hours after we lost. There has been speculation about my job going on the whole year. Anybody that saying that (that he has chosen to step down as Rockets coach), I have no idea why they would say that. "There is no significance to anything other than we lost. That's the only significant thing." Asked if he has meetings with Rockets general manager Carroll Dawson, assistant general manager Daryl Morey or Van Gundy planned to discuss Van Gundy's future, Alexander said that answering any "volatile questions" would lead to more speculation, but would only say he has not made a decision. "Jeff has talked to you about that, and he wouldn't lie," Alexander said. "And I told you I haven't made a decision and you know I have never lied to you. Both stories are untrue. There is no truth to this." But while Van Gundy remained the Rockets on Sunday, a day after the Rockets were eliminated in the playoffs' first round, neither could say how long that would remain true. [email protected] -

Report: Van Gundy leaving RocketsESPN.com news services Saturday's Game 7 loss to the Jazz was the last for Jeff Van Gundy as the Houston Rockets' coach, according to the New York Post. Citing an "impeccable source," The Post reported that Van Gundy is leaving NBA coaching for the forseeable future. According to the source, Van Gundy's decision isn't based on the first-round series loss to the Jazz. Van Gundy wouldn't discuss his future when asked in the postgame news conference Saturday. "All that stuff next year is for another time," Van Gundy said. "Tonight is about obviously a hugely disappointing result. "Guys had a tremendous regular season and a great group, and we didn't play as well as we would have hoped in the postseason." The Rockets have missed the playoffs just once in Van Gundy's four years with the Rockets, but Houston has also failed to make it out of the first round each time. Van Gundy is 430-318 as an NBA coach. He has a 44-44 postseason record in guiding the Knicks and the Rockets to the playoffs. In 1999, he became the first coach in NBA history to guide an eighth-seeded team to the NBA Finals, where the Knicks lost to the San Antonio Spurs. His winning percentage of .590 in New York ranks only second to Pat Riley (.680) in Knicks history. -
