  8. [Hidden Content] Campus Announcements 06/06/2007 - Former LC-M coach joins Lamar State hoop staff Lamar State College-Port Arthur added an assistant coach position to its men's basketball program today with the hiring of Oliver Simmons, a former Little Cypress-Mauriceville High School head coach who was on the University of Kentucky's 1997 national championship team as a freshman and later was a two-year starter at Florida State University before playing several seasons of professional basketball in Europe and the United States. "We are fortunate to find someone with Oliver's impressive qualifications, both as a player and as a coach," said Lamar State head coach Don Bryson, who has been leading the program by himself since its inception in 2004. Bryson, a retired coach and school administrator in the Port Neches-Groves Independent School District, originally planned to coach the Seahawks for three years, get the program off the ground and then retire again. The progress Bryson saw, especially this past season, changed his mind. He agreed to coach another year if he could have an assistant to help with recruiting and running the team. "Oliver's familiarity with area high school coaches also should be a big plus, especially in recruiting," Bryson said. Simmons also will teach in the LSC-PA Kinesiology Program. "We advertised this position nationwide, looking for a coach with a masters degree who also can teach," said Lamar State athletic director Bill Worsham. "We received resumes from many highly qualified candidates. The selection committee chose Coach Simmons because he has an extensive background as a collegiate and professional basketball player and as a head coach of two successful high school programs. He is familiar with the high school programs in this area and is well-prepared to begin coaching at the college level." Simmons currently is head coach at Olympia High School in Orlando, Fl., where he compiled an 82-68 record in the past two years while turning around a program that went 6-24 the year before the took the job. Simmons' team went 18-12 in 2006 and 21-9 this year, the first 20-win season in the school's history. Simmons still holds the career rebounding and scoring records at Lipscomb High School in Nashville, Tn., where the 6'-9" power forward was a 2A all-state player in 1994 and 1995. Simmons was recruited to the University of Kentucky by legendary coach Rick Pitino. He played on Kentucky's 1996 national championship team as a freshman, then broke his leg early in his sophomore year and didn't play much. The next year, Simmons transferred to Florida State University, where he was a two-year starter, leading the team in rebounds as a senior. Simmons also was the team's top performer in the classroom in 1998, 1999 and 2000 while earning a bachelors degree in Business Management and a masters degree in Physical Education with a specialization in Sports Administration. After college, Simmons played professional basketball in Sweden and Holland. He also played pro ball in the United States for the ABA Memphis Houn' Dogs and the IBA Des Moines Dragons. Simmons coached the LC-M Bears to a 60-61 record from 2002 to 2005, going 18-12 the final year before taking the Orlando job. Simmons will join the Lamar State staff on July 1. He and Bryson will be recruiting players for the Seahawks' fourth season and second year in the Division III Metro Athletic Association. "I'm very excited to be back in Texas," Simmons said. "I missed being here, and I'm looking forward to this new challenge." Recent high school graduates and other students who will be attending Lamar State College-Port Arthur in the fall are invited to contact the LSC-PA coaching staff.

  11. High schoolers benched over anti-coach T-shirts GILLETTE, Wyo. (AP) — Eleven of 13 varsity senior soccer players were benched for a match against Sheridan after wearing T-shirts that the Gillette boys' soccer head coach interpreted as challenging the team's coaches. The front of the T-shirt read "18 is greater than 6," and on the back, head coach Jay Mahylis said, was the line, "We'll win it on our own." Mahylis said he took it as a direct challenge to him and his five assistant coaches. "The seniors made a statement today and the coaching staff made our statement," Mahylis said Tuesday. Underclassmen and junior varsity players joined the only two seniors who were not benched in the game Tuesday night against Sheridan, which ended in a 1-1 tie.
  12. Stroud qualifies for U.S. Open By Bob West The Port Arthur News MEMPHIS — No thanks to a certain unnamed airline that removed him from a Sunday night flight from Chicago to Memphis, Chris Stroud is on his way to next week’s U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club. Stroud, operating on minimal sleep after having to make an unplanned drive from Chicago to Memphis, shot rounds of 70-64 Monday over two separate courses at Colonial Country Club to grab one of 15 available spots in the June 14-17 Open. “I just keep telling myself I wasn’t tired,†said Stroud, who was coming off a tie for ninth place Sunday in the Nationwide Tour’s LaSalle Bank Open. “The key was making putts. I have worked so hard on my putting the past month and it’s really paying off.†Stroud, who is playing in the PGA Tour’s Stanford St. Jude Open at the TPC Southwind later this week in Memphis, used an eagle 3 on the 18th hole of the morning round as his springboard into the Open. He was even par at the time, on the harder of the two courses, and ripped a 3-wood from 254 yards to 3 feet. “I almost made a two,†he said. “It was a huge lift going into the afternoon round on a course that was a lot easier.†Stroud shot 5-under-par 30 on the outgoing nine of his afternoon round, then cruised in with a 2-under-34 to nail down his first trip to the U.S. Open. “It’s amazing,†he said. “I never was able to qualify my way into the U.S. Amateur and now I have a spot in the U.S. Open. This is really exciting. I’ll see Oakmont for the first time next week. But the next thing I need to focus on is this week’s tournament. “The way I’m putting I think I have a chance to do really well.†Stroud, who has switched back to a conventional putting grip from left-hand-low, said he took 28 putts on the way to the 70 and 25 enroute to the 64. “It’s amazing how easy the game seems when you are making putts,†he said. “No wonder Tiger Woods wins so many tournaments.†Stroud not only needed good putting, but a degree of mental toughness after what he went through Sunday evening in Chicago. After finishing late in the LaSalle Bank Open, he and wife Tiffany scrambled to make a flight to Memphis. They made it to the airport, were able to get ticketed and get their bags checked with minutes to spare. About the time they were seated, however, bad news was delivered. “The pilot came on and said because of bad weather in Memphis they were going to have to take 10 people off for fuel purposes,†he said. “Since Tiffany and I were among the last on, we were among the first off. We had to rent a car and drive to Memphis.

  16. Young 'Cats shine at Bobcat Baseball Camp Van Wade The Orange Leader ORANGEFIELD — Jeff Bennett expected a nice little crowd at the Bobcat Baseball Camp this week, but the Orangefield head baseball coach certainly didn’t expect as many happy smiling faces as he saw Monday morning. Almost 50 inspired, young future Bobcats have made their way to camp and Bennett is elated. “It’s truly amazing to have this many kids,†Bennett said. “They all seem to be having so much fun. We sure are keeping them busy, this week anyway. They’re learning about the game and they’re getting to meet some new friends.†Bennett has the kids broke down in three different groups. There is the high-energy 5 to 8 year-old group; the 9 to 11 year-old group that has gained a little experience in the Little League ranks; and then there is the 12 year-olds up to incoming freshman group that are there to hone their skills. “Our groups evened out well, about 16 per group,†said Bennett. “The first couple days we’ve focused mainly on the fundamentals, hitting, catching, timing and infield and outfield work. The last two days we’ll be timing them on the bases, working on pitching and such. We try to balance things out pretty well.†The little ones are the ones that keep the coaches busy. Matt Cooper, a former Bobcat standout that graduated last month might have been the busiest, working with the 5 to 8 year-old group. “That’s the group that is the most challenging, but they’re the most fun too,†Cooper said. “They bring all kinds of energy. Once you keep them in line, everything is pretty much smooth after that. It seems like they love the sport. They ask a lot of questions. I’ve heard ‘What if I get hit in the face with the ball’, and I just tell them, ‘That’s what your glove is for.’ “ Cooper is thrilled with the turnout. “I wasn’t expecting this big of a group and it’s been great,†Cooper said. “I’ve been at these camps for awhile and I’ve never seen so many kids. Hopefully it will just continue to expand to even bigger things.†Bennett is glad Cooper is there to lend a helping hand. “Matt is a great kid, to come out here on his own time and help the kids out,†said Bennett. “It takes someone special to work with the kids, especially the younger kids. Matt has a lot of patience. He’s probably having the most fun out here. There never is a dull moment with that group.†Bennett knows all about working with youngsters. His Bobcat squad was the youngest in District 21-3A last season. The Bobcats had four freshman that received a huge amount of playing time as the future looks solid. “We’re going to be young again next year, even though we have some young experience coming back,†Bennett said. “We still have what will be a small senior and junior class. We’ll have about six or seven sophomore that will need to make solid contributions and a pretty good little freshman group coming in.†Bennett feels he has plenty of future Bobcats waiting in the wings with the success of this year’s camp. “We want to set a foundation with this camp,†Bennett said. “We’re discussing with the kids about the success of Bobcat teams in the past. It can be done here. Playoffs are part of the school’s history. The kids need to realize they can compete with the Bridge Citys, Jaspers and Silsbees. I see a lot of determination in the kids’ eyes out here and that’s great to see.â€
  17. LC-M's Sicktich to compete on elite USA A1 volleyball squad Van Wade The Orange Leader LITTLE CYPRESS — Christine Sicktich, who will be a sophomore at Little Cypress-Mauriceville High School next year, recently made the USA Volleyball Girls Select A1 Roster. Almost 1,400 players tried out for the elite unit and just 50 were honored spots on the team. It’s the top program USA Volleyball offers for volleyball players born in and after 1992. SIcktich had an amazing run as a freshman, helping long-time coach Vicki Castino and the Lady Bears to a playoff berth out of District 22-4A. Sicktich, the Newcomer of the Year on the All-Orange Leader Team, was 400-of-481 on attack for the Lady Bears. She notched 171 kills and 40 blocks. She was 356-of-383 on serves and served up 58 aces. She also posted a whopping 491 assists and 291 digs. “It’s a tremendous accomplishment,†Castino said. “The best players in the country try out for that team. There are almost 1,400 great players and to be in that elite 50 is something very special.†The group will train and compete in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., from July 16-26. After the training period, the group will be divided into four teams and compete representing USA Volleyball in the 2007 USA Volleyball High Performance Championships July 22-25. “The kids will miss Christine with all the summer leagues and camps going on this summer but we’re all like, ‘What the heck, go for it Christine,’â€, said Castino. “You don’t get to do something like this very often. We’re all really proud of her and we can’t hardly wait for the high school volleyball season to start. I think we’ll have a good little team.†Rod Wilde, assistant coach at University of Wisconsin, will serve as the program head coach.
