BC’s Scales headed to Fort Bend Elkins Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader BRIDGE CITY — Jackie Scales made it a clean sweep in Orange County for girls basketball coaches out of District 21-3A. Scales recently accepted the position of assistant coach of softball and basketball at Fort Bend Elkins High School in Missouri City. Scales’ departure from being the head coach for Bridge City High School comes after Sondra Ancelot left Orangefield and Callie Orebo left West Orange-Stark High School. Chris Jost has been hired to take over the Lady Bobcats post while the Lady Mustangs are expected to make a hire next week. Scales is making the move to try out something different in a bigger city and in a bigger district as Fort Bend is a 5A school and is in the ten-team District 23-5A. “I hate to leave Bridge City but this is something I couldn’t pass up,†Scales said. “It will be very hard to leave my kids here at Bridge City because I had some awesome kids. The friendships I have made will be ones I will have until I die. I am so grateful to have had this opportunity. If I had not gone to Bridge City, I wouldn’t have met those kids and friends even though I am from here. That is what is so nice about cell phones and emails, we will still keep in touch.†At Elkins, Scales will become a part of a program with playoff success even as early as last season. The girls basketball team was third in District 23-5A and won in the bi-district round 57-54 over Clear Brook. They lost in the area round to Humble, 55-41. In softball, Elkins was the district champions and won in the area round 3-2 over Deer Park. They lost in two games to Brazoswood in the regional quarterfinals. “It was unusual because the softball coached raved about the basketball program and the basketball coach spoke so highly of the softball,†Scales said. “The knowledge I will get from both of them, I’m beside myself. I also will get to still teach World Geography and that makes me excited.†Even before her first day on the job, Scales has already seen what it is like to be at such a big school. “The human resources department called and made it official and offered the job,†Scales said. “They said they were sending out the paper work. I didn’t receive it and I called them back. She said they had 100 new employees they just hired.â€

Gordon, Johnson fail qualifying inspection By NASCAR.COM June 22, 2007 03:11 PM EDT SONOMA, Calif. -- Nextel Cup Series points leader Jeff Gordon and defending series champion Jimmie Johnson, both of the Hendrick Motorsports stable, have failed inspection at Infineon Raceway. The cars of neither Gordon, the defending race champion, nor Johnson will be allowed to practice or qualify Friday. NASCAR spokesman Ramsey Poston said both cars "failed the initial inspection ... as a result of body modifications found to be outside NASCAR tolerances. The front fender [of both cars] was modified outside of NASCAR regulations. They did not meet the C2 template inspection." [Hidden Content]

16 year old marries coach BRUNSWICK COUNTY -- The mother of a Brunswick County 16-year-old who married her High School Coach is speaking out. Betty Hager says she tried to stop the relationship between her daughter and a 40-year-old teacher at South Brunswick High School, including contacting local law enforcement and the school. (View the full interview here) Hager has a paper trail documenting all the conversations she's had with different agencies in Brunswick County. She says it somehow wasn't enough, to stop her daughter, Windy, from marrying a teacher more than twice her age. "Police, Sheriff's office, the principal, the Sheriff's department, friends, family," Hager said. "Nobody could reach her and he would not stay away from my child." It's been a long and frustrating road for the Hagers. It all started the summer after Windy's freshman year, when she was just 14 years old. That's when Windy joined the track team, and her coach took a special interest in her. "She's always been fiercely protective of family and friends," Hager said. "Once she met him her large circle of people she protected went smaller and smaller. Anyone that tried to keep her from the one person that was her focus was the enemy." Fast forward two years. Windy's parents say the time, and their protest had done little to stop the love affair between their daughter and Brenton Scott Wuchae. "The more we tried to save her," Betty Hager said. "The more we became the enemy and there becomes a time when you have to say, I can't save you from yourself." On Monday, they finally gave in, signing a document allowing Windy to marry Wuchae. He resigned from his position with the school system on the same day as the wedding. "We love our baby. We never wanted this for her. She could have had anything she wanted. the world was her oyster. She was capable of anything. she gave it all up," Hager said. School officials say they were aware of the relationship, but could not prove that anything inappropriate was going on. In a statement released to the press after a closed door meeting with the school board today, Superintendent Katie McGee said, "I am shocked and disheartened by what transpired." Windy's parents say their daughter moved out yesterday after the wedding. They say they're still hopeful she'll return.
