High Island Cardinals The High Island Cardinals have nowhere to go but up. They finished last season a dreadful 1-8 and were shut out 7 times. They now have a new head coach and 20, that’s right, 20 returning starters that will try to fight their way out of the 24-1A cellar. They averaged just 8 points per game last season. QB Tiner George returns after he passed for 400 yards and rushed for 450 yards. RB T.J. Kahla is also back after rushing for 490 yards and 3 touchdowns. Other Offensive Impact Players: Steven Landrum (WR) Defensive Summary The Cardinals also welcome 10 starters back on defense. Last season High Island gave up 41 points per game and will try to improve that number this season. The defensive leader will be LB Trey Hall. Dayton Broncos Dayton enters their 2nd season in 22-4A and after the season they had in 2006 they are predicted to win the district championship for the 2nd straight year in 2007. Dayton stormed through 22-4A play last season undefeated and emerged as the district champions. Coach Jerry Stewart and his 11 returning starters will make it tough for anyone to take the title from them and they may very well run the 22-4A table again. The Broncos lose one of the best RB in all of Southeast Texas in Michael Dugat (West Texas A&M) but there will still be a Dugat in the Bronco backfield in 2007, Michael’s brother AJ Dugat. Look for the Dayton rushing game to not miss a beat in 2007. However, the most important player back has to be QB Cody Green. Green did it all last year, from passing for 1,589 yards and 20 touchdowns to rushing for 689 yards and 4 touchdowns. His performance last year earned him the 22-4A newcomer of the year award. Other Offensive Impact Players: Paul Fontenot (WR) Defensive Summary Coach Stewart welcomes back 4 starters from a defense that gave up 10 points per game in 2006. Dayton had one of the best defenses in all of Southeast Texas last year. FS Ford Smesny is the leading tackler back after having 83 tackles last season. Look for NG Brent Kimmy and LB John Gable to have big seasons as well. Other Defensive Impact Players: Fred Hynson (LB) The SETXsports week 0 game of the week may very well be the contest in West Orange when the Broncos face the Mustangs. Dayton opens 22-4A play on September 28 when they travel to Lumberton to face the Raiders. Many expect the district title to be on the line on October 26 when Central travels to Dayton in what should be a great contest. Port Neches-Groves Indians Last season PN-G finished 5-5 overall and 3-4 in 22-4A play and found themselves on the outside looking in as far as the playoff picture goes. That’s something the Indian faithful isn’t used to. Coach Matt Burnett and 10 returning starters will hope to turn that around in 2007. PN-G does have their QB back in junior Harrison Tatum. As a sophomore Tatum had 44 completions for 612 yards and 6 touchdowns. Expect him to be even more productive this year. Another important offensive weapon returning is FB Jake Hemmings. In ’06 Hemmings rushed for 946 yards and 4 touchdowns. If the offense comes around early PN-G could put up some big numbers in 2007. Other Offensive Impact Players: Matt Johnson (WR) Defensive Summary The strong point of the ’07 PN-G Indians should be the defense. Coach Burnett has 7 starters back from last year’s unit that allowed 24 points per game. The Indian defensive front should be tough with DT Jody McDonald and DE Clint Burnett who had 4 sacks last season. Kenneth Tezeno is also back to man his CB position after having 5 interceptions last year. If PN-G’s defense can step up the Indians should be in the hunt for the playoffs in 2007. Other Defensive Impact Players: Kaleb Walker (LB) Brett Doty (FS) PN-G will be part of the double-header at Reliant Stadium to open the 2007 season as they take on the defending 4A Division 2 champions from La Marque. They have their home opener on September 7 against the Crosby Cougars before a huge non-district affair at Silsbee. The Indians open 22-4A play on September 28 when they travel to Lamar’s Cardinal Stadium to face the Ozen Panthers. The toughest part of the schedule may be the final two games vs Central and at defending 22-4A champion Dayton. Evadale Rebels Last season the Evadale Rebels made the playoffs as the 3rd place team in district 24-1A. This year they hope to challenge West Hardin and Hull-Daisetta for the district championship. Coach Mark Williams has 12 starters back that will help to continue Evadale’s climb to the top. The Rebels will also be strong at the WR position with David Drake and Joh Loan leading the way. Buna Cougars The Buna Cougars made the drop to class 2A last season and found immediate success. They went 4-2 in 24-2A play and made the playoffs for the first time in years. Their season was ended in the Bi-District round at the hands of Newton 42-7 and they finished the year at 7-4. Coach Bradley Morgan expects that success to carry over to 2007 and hopefully will result in a longer playoff run. The Buna offensive line should be good this season led by All-District LT Travis Harding, RT Chris Dotson and LG Cody Holland. Also look for QB Justin Carrell to have a productive year in 2007. Other Offensive Impact Players: Luke Clark (TE) Defensive Summary Last year the Cougars only allowed 16 points per game. They return 5 starters on defense in 2007. All-District OLB Anthony Smith returns to lead the Buna defense after collecting 85 tackles in 2006. DT Dillon Moss will lead a strong Buna defensive line. The key to Buna’s success this year may rest on how the defense plays. Other Defensive Impact Players: Blanton Craft (CB) Buna opens the 2007 season with a road trip at old rival Orangefield in week 0. The Cougars hit the road again in week 1 when they travel to Burkeville to take on the Mustangs. They also have a game with 3A Tarkington and 1A Hull-Daisetta on the non-district schedule. Buna opens 24-2A play on September 28 at home against Anahuac. A game that could weigh heavily on how 24-2A turns out is the matchup in Winnie on October 26 between Buna and district favorite East Chambers. Kirbyville Wildcats If there was ever a season for Kirbyville to win the 21-3A championship this is it. The Wildcats return just about their entire team from last year and most of the key players are back. Coach Jack Alvarez welcomes back 14 starters from last year’s Area Round team. The Wildcats lost to the Sweeny Bulldogs 35-28 to end their season at 8-4 after finishing 3rd in 21-3A. Expect Aaron to have another great year in 2007. Also returning in the backfield is RB Pierce Rhodes. He had a monster 2006 season chewing up opposing defenses as he rushed for 1,526 yards and 23 touchdowns. Rhodes also caught 13 passes for 354 yards and 3 touchdowns. Look for the Kirbyville offense to be very tough to stop in 2007. Other Offensive Impact Players: Randy Muskgrove (WR) Broderick Jackson (RB) Defensive Summary Kirbyville also has 7 starters back on defense. Last season the defense allowed 23 points per game. Not only is Pierce Rhodes a huge threat on offense, he is also a threat on defense. Rhodes had 105 tackles last season for the Wildcats. The secondary for Kirbyville should be very solid led by the above mentioned Broderick Jackson from his FS position along with CB Desmond Evert. Also look for LB Barry Burley and DE Linwood Crawford to have big years. Hardin Hornets Larry Haynes takes over a Hardin program looking to get back on its feet after a few tough seasons. Coach Haynes will definitely have plenty to work with as the Hornets have 17 total starters back for 2007. Hopefully a new winning attitude mixed with a lot of experience will get Hardin back to their winning ways. Also look for the Hornets to be strong at the WR position with Chase Ringer, Hunter Davis and Cameron Koen. Other Offensive Impact Players: Daniel Marsh (RB) Jordan Nolan (QB) Defensive Summary The Hornets return 8 starters from a defensive unit that gave up 31 points per game last season. That number will have to improve for Hardin to have a chance to compete for a playoff spot. Hull-Daisetta Bobcats Hull-Daisetta was expected to challenge West Hardin last year for the 24-1A championship but ended up getting blown out in the district championship game 36-7. The Bobcats would go on to finish the year in the Bi-District round with a 45-34 loss to Groveton. They finished with a 7-4 overall record. Hull-Daisetta welcomes back 16 starters in 2007 and should be ready to challenge again for the district title. Kountze Lions For the Kountze Lions a 4-6 or 5-5 season usually is what’s expected. But since the arrival of coach Stan Hodges a few years ago, a new attitude is brewing up in Lion Country. Last season Kountze got a few quality wins and will look to build on that heading into the 2007 season. OT Deric Puckitt, OT Tanner Hughes and C Colt Ambrose will be leaders on the offensive line. Look for Kountze to also have a pretty good group of receivers led by Stephen Gerhard. Other Offensive Impact Players: Joe Turner (WR) Defensive Summary Kountze should have a very good defense in 2007. Last year the Lions allowed 24 points per game. They do have a lot of experience back including 3 All-District picks. FS Thomas Walcott had 3 interceptions last season and was a First Team All-District pick and is a 4-year starter for the Lions. Another returner, DE Chad Morrison, was also a First Team pick and had 99 tackles last season. Look for Kountze to have some good linebackers in 2007 including Devon Wise and Josh Haynes. Newton Eagles Newton Eagles = district champions. It goes hand in hand. The Eagles won another district title last year going a perfect 5-0 in 23-2A play. They finished the season 8-3 overall as they lost to Marlin in the area round of the playoffs. Coach Barbay and his Eagles are favored to win yet another district championship in 2007 with the help of 12 returning starters. Last year the Eagles averaged 34 points per game and will look to keep the offense rolling in 2007. Newton has always been a run oriented team offensively and this year looks to be no different. The RB position is loaded, led by returning starter Justin McLemore. McLemore had a huge year in 2006, rushing for 1,370 and 14 touchdowns. That earned him all-district honors. Another RB that has huge potential is Trey Ethridge. He may see a lot of carries early in the season. Nico Adams moves from RB to QB this year and should be successful there. Other Offensive Impact Players: James Mattox (WR) Jaron Spikes (TE) Defensive Summary The Eagles also welcome back 6 starters on defense. Last season Newton’s defense allowed 17 points per game. All-District LB Dillon Flanigan returns after recording 96 tackles in 2006. Sophomore Malcolm Mattox should also make an impact on defense at LB and at DE. Look for the Newton defensive line to be very good as well in 2007 with Jeff Byerly and Jim Hughes leading the way. Coach Barbay has never been known to shy away from a tough non-district schedule and this year will be no different. All 4 of Newton’s non-district games are against 3A schools. The Eagles open the season on September 7 with a road game at Crockett. On September 14 we have the “battle in the piney woods†as Newton welcomes rival Jasper to Singletary Stadium. Newton will face another 21-3A member on September 21 when they host the Silsbee Tigers. They will close out non-district play at home on September 28 against the Carthage Bulldogs. The Eagles begin 23-2A play on October 12 at Corrigan-Camden. Lumberton Raiders A new attitude and added confidence follows the Lumberton Raiders into the 2007 season. Second year head coach Alvin Credeur looks to take the next step to getting the Raiders into the playoffs for the first time in school history. Lumberton took some strides into turning their program around last year with a few big wins and will try and build on that with the return of 16 starters. East Chambers Buccaneers Coach Tony Valastro and his East Chambers Buccaneers look primed to take the 24-2A championship once again in 2007. The Bucs welcome 14 starters back from last year’s 11-1 team. Overall the district should be tougher than it was last season and it should make for some very exciting Friday nights. Last year the offense put up 38 points per game. The leader for the East Chambers offense returns in QB Tramain Thomas. Thomas had one of the best years in all of Southeast Texas in 2006 as he passed for 1,366 yards and 11 touchdowns and rushed for 1,349 yards and 22 touchdowns (team leader in both categories). He also had 2 interceptions from his safety position. Another key player for the Buccaneer offense is TE Vance McDonald. He had 11 catches for 196 yards and 2 touchdowns last year. We expect the East Chambers offense to roll once again in 2007 and continue to light up the scoreboard. Last season the Buccaneer defense allowed 23 points per game. LB Paul Trammell will be the defensive leader this year for the Bucs. He had a monster year last season as he had 119 tackles, 2 sacks, 3 forced fumbles and 3 fumble recoveries. Joining Trammell at the LB position will be Jarod Rabalais and Kendall Barrow. West Orange-Stark Mustangs The WO-S Mustangs will look to continue their district dominance in class 3A in 2007. The ‘Stangs have yet to lose a district game since dropping to the 3A ranks in 2004, but the road looks to be a little more bumpy this time around for the blue and silver. Not only did WO-S lose a lot to graduation, but they also lost some key coaches in the offseason. That mixture could be enough to allow someone to sneak up and take the 21-3A title from the Mustangs. The leader of that group is RB DePauldrick Garrett. Garrett rushed for 1,327 yards and 17 touchdowns in 2006 and made first team all-district. Ortavious Hypolite will take over the QB duties after the graduation of Andre Bevil. Another offensive all-district first teamer back is OL Tim Matherne. Brandon Allensworth and Eric Arnold should also have a good year on the offensive line. Even with the low number of returners, don’t expect the Mustang offense to sputter too much. Other Offensive Impact Players: Ronnie Dennis (WR) Defensive Summary Only 3 starters are back on defense for WO-S this year. The ‘Stangs defense was tough in 2006, giving up just 8 points per game. First-Team all district FS Seth Thomas is back to lead the Mustang secondary after recording 117 tackles in 2006. DB Josh Rhodes will be counted on to make an impact in the secondary as well. Another standout on defense is DE/LB Josh Lynch. We will see how the “chain gang†defense performs without the guidance of Coach Mark Foreman this season. Central Jaguars The 2007 Central Jaguars will be looking to reclaim what they feel belongs to them, the 22-4A championship. The district race last year was nip and tuck all year between Central and Dayton and it was the Broncos that came away with the championship after they beat the Jags 21-20 in Beaumont. One thing is for certain about Central, they will have speed to burn once again this year and should challenge Dayton for the district title. The biggest returning starter is RB Derrick Hall. In ’06 Hall was a dual threat, rushing for 550 yards and as a receiver had 450 yards. The offensive line will be a talented group led by Zaybrion Barnwell and Parnell Wells. Defensively, Central should be solid. DE Brian Davis is a pure talent. He had 55 tackles and 7 sacks last season for the Jags. Also look for DL Edward Fleming will give opposing teams trouble all year. The secondary will be lead by CB Adrian Guillory. Hamshire-Fannett Longhorns A new coach and 10 returning starters will try to lead Hamshire-Fannett back to the playoffs for the first time since 2003. Coach Walt Mangan takes over a Hamshire-Fannett program that has struggled for the last few years. Hopefully the change is what the Longhorns need to get back over the hump. Anahuac Panthers Just 4 seasons ago the Anahuac Panthers were a district champion in class 3A. Last season the Panthers suffered through a 2-8 season. Anahuac made a huge move during the offseason when they picked up former Hull-Daisetta head coach Darrell Barbay to be their new head coach. The Panthers had some very close games last season and should make some noise this year. Hardin-Jefferson Hawks 3 points. That’s all that separated the Hardin-Jefferson Hawks from a winning season last year. The Hawks were involved in 3 one point games and each time they came up on the losing end. Had they been able to pull off those wins they would have finished 6-4 instead of 3-7. Orangefield Bobcats Coach Blake Morrison enters his 4th season as head coach of the orange and white and will look to shake up the 21-3A waters in 2007. Coach Morrison hopes to lead the ‘Cats to a place they haven’t been since 2003, the playoffs. It will be a very tall task to get there as 21-3A is thought of by many to be one of the toughest districts in the state. Many would think that having just 4 starters back on defense would cause the Bobcats to struggle on that side of the ball. However, Coach Morrison is a defensive specialist and should have the young Bobcats more than ready to compete in a district full of high powered offenses. Of the 4 starters back, defensive back Ryan Granger will be counted on heavily. Granger hauled in 6 interceptions last year and should have another great season in ’07. West Hardin Oilers Last season the West Hardin Oilers went 8-3 and a perfect 4-0 in 24-1A play to win the district championship. The game that everyone expected to be a barn burner for the championship turned out to be a blowout win for the Oilers as they beat Hull-Diasetta 36-7. West Hardin is once again expected to be at the top of the district race with Hull-Diasetta in 2007 and many expect the championship to once again be decided when these two meet up. Last year the Oilers averaged 27 points per game. West Hardin lost 2 of the best players in all of Southeast Texas last year in Brandon Letsinger and Zach Simmons. QB Tyler Copeland and RB Ethan Tubbs will fill those spots. As backups last season Copeland passed for 275 yards and 5 touchdowns and Tubbs rushed for 376 yards and 3 touchdowns. Tubbs also caught 12 passes for 153 yards and 2 touchdowns last season. Other Offensive Impact Players: Matt Henshaw (TE) Defensive Summary The Oilers also have 5 starters back from a defensive unit that gave up 17 points per game last year. LB Jarid Bordes returns after having a huge 2006 season. Bordes finished 2006 with 174 tackles. Also back on defense is LB Justin Doiron who had 4 interceptions last season.
