Great game tonight. No quit in these teams at all. OF had a chance to win it in the 1st OT after they held Buna on their possession. OF drove down to the 2 yard line and missed a field goal that would have given them the win. In the 2nd OT OF got the ball first and kicked a field goal to go up 17-14. Buna then drove down to the OF goal line and it took 4 plays for them to punch it in. Positives for OF is that it is just non-district play and I saw a HUGE improvement from last week.

[Hidden Content] Cardinals seek back-to-back wins Gabe Pruett The Orange Leader BRIDGE CITY — It has been a little bit of a different feeling for Cris Stump and his Cardinals this week. Instead of forgetting about another painful loss, the 1-0 Cardinals are having to learn how to put a win in the past and move on. Bridge City will have to do that quickly as Kountze is headed to Larry B. Ward Stadium at 6 p.m. Saturday. The Cardinals lead the series 2-1. “I told the players to enjoy the win all they could and now get ready because Kountze is on its way,†Stump said. Bridge City is fresh off a 32-20 win over Liberty while Kountze downed Woodville 20-14. Junior Joe Robertson was the leader on offense for the Cardinals as he rushed for 111 yards on 15 carries with two touchdowns. Receiver Cory Moseley also had a nice night with two receptions for two touchdowns. Jerry Landry finished with two catches for 40 yards, one a 25-yard touchdown strike. The victory was the starting debut of Josh Lemoine at quarterback. Lemoine finished 9-for-22 for 155 with three touchdowns and no interceptions. Lemoine added 89 yards on 14 carries. “They were fired up on Wednesday because it was the first time we watched the film from the Liberty game,†Stump said. “It certainly was different for our players. I told them though Kountze won too and they will also be fired up to play. Kountze is predicted by some people to win their district.†Even after his first win as a head coach, Stump was still able to find some things the Cardinals will need to improve on against the Lions. Bridge City gave up 338 yards against Liberty, many of the yards coming in the second half as the Cardinals seemed to get a bit tired. “As the game went on, we did not do as well with our tackling,†Stump said. “That is really when they (Panthers) started to break some of their long runs. “I have been real proud of our kids this week. They have done a good job understanding they got their first win so now we have to prepare to get the second one. I have been real happy with the way our kids have prepared mentally.â€

[Hidden Content] Bobcats brace for old rival Buna Gabe Pruett The Orange Leader ORANGEFIELD — From one District 23-2A opponent to the next, the Orangefield Bobcats are working hard this week to undo some problems after Week Zero. The Bobcats will square off against Buna at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at F.L. McLain Stadium. Orangefield leads the long-standing rivalry 23-21-2 in a series which dates back to 1961. Morrison may not be worried about the distant path because his only concern is fixing the Bobcats’ present and future. The Bobcats gave up 384 yards, including 300 on the ground, to East Chambers in a 26-7 loss in Week 0. “First thing is we are going to have to tackle a lot better,†Morrison said. “We didn’t wrap up and that means we were not getting people to the football. We had a lot of busted assignments on defense. We need that fixed.†Defense was not the only problems for the Bobcats (0-1) who only managed 122 yards on offense. “On offense we are still looking for guys who block up front,†Morrison said. “They have to run block and pass protect. We have to be smart and not turn the ball over this week.†Zach Peevey led the Bobcats offense with 20 carries for 77 yards. Receiver Derrick Evans hauled in four receptions for 43. Steven Stone scored the Bobcats’ lone touchdown from 1-yard out. The Cougars meanwhile cruised past Trinity 50-7 in Buna’s first game of the season. Buna racked up 351 yards against Trinity as Ryan Sheppard led the way with 93 yards on eight carries. Quarterback Josh Clark had 58 yards in the air and another 34 yards on the ground and Blanton Crash added 71 yards rushing. “There really was not an area of the game against East Chambers we watched that did not have problems,†Morrison said. “We plan on getting better from Week 0 to Week 1. “Buna is a good football team. Coach (Bradley) Morgan does a good job over there. The Cougars run a good offense so we have to be sure to line up and tackle those guys.†Morrison was pleased though with how easy both Orangefield and Buna officials made it to move the game to Saturday. “When I came back on Monday I talked to Mr. (Phillip) Welch and we got together with Bradley,†Morrison said. “We both decided you can only get better if we played the game. We have only had one practice and our guys got after it pretty good. The kids know what we have to work on and hopefully now they will sharpen things up. We will be ready to play.â€

[Hidden Content] Mustangs readying for LC-M encounter Van Wade The Orange Leader WEST ORANGE — Coaches at West Orange-Stark were erasing the chalkboard and part of their gameplan that they had prepared for in their non-district battle with Little Cypress-Mauriceville and were beginning to prepare to get the Mustangs ready for Kirbyville Sept. 12 when the phone rang Wednesday. Long-time Mustang coach Dan Hooks received a call from LC-M head coach Todd Moody that got the Orange Bowl back on schedule after the game looked as if it was going to be cancelled for nearly two days. The game is slated for 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Dan R. Hooks Stadium. “I tell you, I was thrilled to get that call from Todd,†said Hooks. “The game needs to be played. Everyone else in the area will be playing and neither our kids are the LC-M kids need to be sitting at home Saturday night.†The Orange Bowl has had plenty of exciting moments over the years despite the fact that WO-S leads the all-time series 22-2. “One thing about the LC-M kids, they flat-out battle their tails off against us,†said Hooks. “Most of their kids know our kids. There’s nothing bitter about this game when we play it. Both teams respect each other and once the game is over, we always wish each other success down the road.†The Mustangs sweated one out at LC-M last year, downing the Bears 6-0 at Battlin’ Bear Stadium when quarterback Ortavious Hypolite hit receiver Josh Rhodes on a 47-yard scoring strike on a third-and-17 play with just 54 ticks left on the clock. “The Bears got after us all night long and by the end of that one, there were two spent football teams,†said Hooks. ‘They gave us a darn good test two years ago out here too.†The Mustangs have captured the last 11 games in the series. The last LC-M victory came in 1994 when they downed the Mustangs 37-6 and went on to claim the school’s first-ever district title. “I remember that game like it was yesterday,†said Hooks. “Those (Craig) Merritt and (Scott) Worster kids ran through us like a runaway train. It’s always a battle. When we won state back in 1986 (WO-S 15, LC-M 0) and 1987 (WO-S 28, LC-M 14) those were two of the toughest tests we had during those seasons.†The Mustangs (1-0) opened the 2008 campaign with a flurry, going to Nederland’s backyard and thumping the Bulldogs 33-13. Senior running back Quintavious Garrett set a school record, zipping for 317 yards and four touchdowns on 26 totes. The Mustangs racked up 455 yards of total offense and slowed down a talented Nederland attack, holding the Bulldogs to just 199 yards. “We liked our chances going in, but to win the way we did was somewhat surprising,†Hooks said. “We’ve had some close, knockdown drag-outs with Nederland over the years, so we were really excited for our kids.†Nederland struck first on a 51-yard scoring pass but the Mustangs never wavered, using a punishing and time-consuming running attack that was led by a surprising inexperienced offensive line. “For it being a first game, we were really pleased with our offensive production,†Hooks said. “Our offensive line really held their own and I’m so proud of them. Quinnie (Garrett), that was an amazing performance. We may not see one like that again in a long time. Defensively, other than one play, we were outstanding. Anytime you can hold a Nederland team to less than 200 yards, that’s quite an accomplishment.†Coach Moody and staff is definitely working with a young squad as the Bears head into their opener. Six starters return on offense and just two on defense from last year’s 1-9 unit. The Bears’ preseason roster had 14 sophomores or freshmen on the varsity. “The Bears are definitely a young team but I bet they have a lot of hungry young talent that is ready to prove itself,†said Hooks. “In a lot of cases, those are the funnest type of teams to work with and build on. We’ve seen them in scrimmages. They look feisty and they come after you.†The Bears will be led on the field by sophomore quarterback Hunter Gonzales and a handful of Bears will be getting good looks in the backfield and at the receiving positions. “That Gonzales kid, you can just tell that he’s a heckuva athlete and is one of those kids that has a bright future ahead of him,†said Hooks. “Last year they had (Kendrex) Salter carrying the ball a bulk of the time. This year, it looks like they have a stable of backs they can turn too that have good speed and size. It looks like Coach Moody has a lot of options there.†Most of all, people across the area are thrilled that the game is back on. “So many things are involved around this game,†Hooks said. “I’m sure LC-M is raring to go with it being their first game. Everyone in the community will be there getting together. The last time we played at our place each school earned about $6,000 in ticket sales. That goes a long way in scholarship money. It’s just a gathering you like to see take place every year.â€

[Hidden Content] Pirates off to a solid start; await St. Thomas Van Wade The Orange Leader VIDOR — After making a nice statement to start their 2008 campaign, the Vidor Pirates hope to continue their winning ways Friday night when they welcome the Houston St. Thomas Eagles to Pirate Stadium for a 7:30 p.m. start. The Pirates are fresh off a 15-7 victory against a solid Beaumont Kelly unit, racking up 238 yards on the ground and containing a tough Bulldog offense. “For an opener, we saw a lot of positive things,†said Vidor head coach Jeff Mathews. “Our defense, for the most part, was tremendous. The kids bent a little but never broke. We played well when Kelly had the ball on our end, plus we were able to force a few turnovers.†Fullback Theron Reynolds led the Pirates on the ground with 112 yards on 19 carries. Running back Shane Pittman zipped for 89 yards on 11 totes and quarterback Chris Teinert had 26 yards and scored two touchdowns on 1-yard quarterback keepers. “Offensively, I see a lot of areas that we can improve on,†said Mathews. “We kinda bogged our ourselves down a little bit on a few of our drives. We still need plenty of work in the passing game as well. Overall, it was a good win for us. In some games last year, we played hard and lost some close ones. We could’ve played better against Kelly and we still won the game. To me, that sounds really good because the kids no that they will only get better if they continue to work hard like they’ve been doing.†While Vidor was downing Kelly, St. Thomas, who is in the same TAPPS district with Kelly, took its lumps, falling to Houston Stark Jesuit 23-0. The Eagles are coached by former Rice standout quarterback Donald Hollas, who also spent time playing in the National Football League. The Eagles return four starters on both sides of the ball from a unit that went 3-7 a season ago. Running back Connor Mills leads the running game agter gaining 345 yards and four touchdowns on 54 carries in 2007. The Eagles are guided on defense by the likes of linebackers Paul Rogers and Kyle Willard and defensive backs Colin Bassett and Jeff Kelly. “St. Thomas is a team that likes to spread you out,†said Mathews. “They have a few breakaway threats that our kids will have to stay in front of. We’re looking for them to test us pretty well.†Mathews likes the way the Pirates are shaping up early on. “I truly like the mind-set of this team,†Mathews said. “We had a handful of plays in the Kelly game that we didn’t execute well. The kids realized that and are gung-ho about getting them corrected. They’re really wanting to learn and their attitudes have been super. We’re really excited about the next nine weeks.†The Pirates will close their non-district schedule next week when they visit Sour Lake to take on Hardin-Jefferson. Vidor will be open Sept. 19 and will start District 20-4A play Sept. 26 on the road at Beaumont Central.

Look guys I know you (WOS and LCM) are upset that you won't be playing this week, but I ask you to stop, take a deep breath, and think about this. We just got very lucky and dodged a major hurricane. Be glad that you will get to see your teams next week. It could have been different. Just remember 3 short years ago the type of season we had. What if this storm had been like Rita and hit us head on? What if it had produced the same or even worse results and we weren't able to finish the season at all? All I'm saying is be thankful that you only have to wait another week for the next game instead of having to wait another year.......
