LC-M takes down WO-S, 12-3 Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader LITTLE CYPRESS — Good thing it is early for both the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Battlin’ Bears and the West Orange-Stark Mustangs. The Bears struck quick for a 9-run first inning then took their feet off the gas as LC-M won 12-3 at Don Gibbens Field. After a flurry of runs in the first inning, the Bears (1-0) found Zane Anderson of the Mustangs (0-1) tough to hit off of the rest of the night. Anderson went 5 1/3 innings giving up three runs on five hits with six strike outs and one walk. Tim Barry, Dallas Brown, Taylor Thompson and Scott Vaughn each scored twice for the Bears. Brown homered in the sixth inning to make the final score, the first homer for the Bears this season. Brown finished with three RBI on the night. Barry had a RBI double in the third while Stefan Cloeren added a two-run single in the bottom of the first, his second at bat of the inning. Brown also had a two-run single in the bottom of the first. LC-M scored nine runs on four hits in the fourth and also got help from three WO-S errors. The Mustangs scored twice in the top of the third. Darius Mitchell scored on a RBI walk by Justin Sparrow and Kendall Veitch did the same off a walk from Cody Hodge. Mitchell scored again in the sixth as Jordan Darnall reached on a two-base error. LC-M committed five errors in the game while WO-S had four. Vaughn scored the Bears’ 10th run in the third after leading off with a double. Two batters later Barry plated Vaughn with a RBI double. Shane Waddell, who was the starting pitcher for the Bears, scored in the fourth on a passed ball.

Wagner sisters coming up big for Lady 'Cats Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader ORANGEFIELD — One is an experience senior and the other is a talented, starting freshman. Together the Wagner sisters in Orangefield have joined the rest of the Lady Bobcats a very special season. Olivia Wagner had already established herself as a star in Orangefield while Ashton has proven to be ready for the same spotlight. The sisters were first teammates during volleyball season and now are in Class 3A Region III Area Round playoffs. “It is pretty awesome to be in the playoffs as a freshman with your sister,†Ashton said on Thursday. “We have to go hard or we are going home.†Olivia quickly said the Lady Bobcats are not going home this weekend. “It is first regional tournament or bust,†Olivia said. “I want us to go as far as Orangefield as ever gone. The seniors have been telling the younger players it is time to step up. It is now do or die. The officials are not going to call as many fouls so the games are going to be a little rough. Every team is going to want it as much as we do.†Playing on the same team as her sister was also something Olivia wanted to do a lot at the beginning of the school year. “I really didn’t know what to expect,†Olivia said. “At first I was not sure she would get the chance to be on varsity. I am happy for her and glad she got the opportunity. Now she has stepped up and I am proud of her. She sure doesn’t play like a freshman.†Some sisters would have a problem being on the same team as their sister, especially with one being a senior and the other being a freshman. “I just look at her as another player when we are on the court,†Ashton said. “She is always there to encourage me and she is a big leader on our team on the court. I have never received special treatment.†Ashton added Olivia also usually takes it easy on her after a mistake. “Well it depends on her mood,†Ashton joked. “I know I can yell at her because I know she can handle it,†Olivia said. “We rely on her heavily. We are starting to count on her to do a little of everything. Once you are on varsity, you are expected to not play like a freshman. On the court I don’t think of Ashton as a freshman and I don’t even think of her as a sister. Now when someone hits her hard, I do get a little mad. I just know I can’t be soft on her.†Ashton also knows the Lady Bobcats rely heavily on Olivia in the critical points of games.“We rely on her a lot,†Ashton said. “She is always there to bring us up and she is always there. We look to her to be one of our leaders and one of our captains. She is a great teammate and we wouldn’t be in the position we are in now without her.†The sisters position can be even better after tonight when the Lady Bobcats take on Navasota. And like both sisters agreed on, the Lady Bobcats are not ready to call it a season just yet.

OF looks to this year's Navasota game, not last year Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader ORANGEFIELD — Orangefield Coach Chris Jost had a simple message to his team early this week — forget last year. “This is a new year and new teams,†Jost. The fact remains the Lady Bobcats will get another crack at the Navasota Lady Rattlers tonight at 7p.m. at Kingwood Park High School in the Class 3A Region III Area Round. Orangefield (24-5) was defeated by Navasota (29-7) in last year’s playoffs. Just an editor’s note, this season there will be neutral officials. “We are going to play for this year,†Jost said. “Of course we are glad for the chance to play Navasota again but we want to be this year’s area champion. We have to keep that in perspective.†Navasota still brings a lot of the same problems this year as they did last year in Jost’s mind. “They are very similar to last year in that they are very athletic and very tall,†Jost added. “They are all 5’7 to 6-foot tall. Just like last year they are going to look to attack and get the ball inside. They will want to make us hit shots in front of them and every chance they get they are going to want to fast break off a rebound.†One good thing for the Lady Bobcats is the recent battles between Hardin-Jefferson. “Our two closest games for a while was the two losses to Koutnze,†Jost said. “We were glad to play such a talented team like Hardin-Jefferson. We had to be ready to play and we had to make adjustments. The Lady Hawks are as good as any warm-up team we could have scheduled. That third game was a very mentally straining game. It came down to who would find a way to win and that is going to be in the playoffs. Hardin-Jefferson made us mentally prepared for the playoffs.†Jost is also glad to see the Lady Bobcats starting to peak at the right time. “Our players are starting to step up at the same time,†the second-year Orangefield coach said. “Aimee (Scales) and Ashton (Wagner) have been more consistent and now we have three to four players off the bench who are also getting it done. In the second half of district it has been a nine-girl effort. Last year we played with seven but we were talented enough to get away with it. This year we made some adjustments and it has gone great.†Jost has become proud of what these Lady Bobcats have done in 2008-09. “I am excited about what this team has accomplished,†Jost said. “Expectations are always high in Orangefield. When you have three starting seniors coming back, the bar is raised even higher. At times this year we were struggling to meet our own expectations. We have been real consistent over the last three weeks. This team is starting to hit its stride and it was worth the wait. The lose to H-J in the first half of district was an eye-opener. We got spanked pretty good on our home court and that has not happened in a while around here.†Now the Lady Bobcats are ready to make sure last year was the only time in the recent past the Class 3A Regional Tournament did not include Orangefield.
