Thanks Claude for the nice comment, but I have to say that its the players that finally realized what they are capeable of doing. I am blessed with great coaches that help me out each and every day, especially my defensive guy Mr. Cody Bryant ( also the Vice President of our League) He has a great mind for the game and we work well together. I also have a lot of help from other dads and moms at each practice. I will take credit for keeping it simple and if I start to try any thing stupid ( like in Silsbee ) Cody reminds me and we go back to simple.... I am mostly proud of this YOUNG team of footballers and their desire to win. No matter the outcome this weekend, we have had the most memorable season of my coaching years. You and JP are class acts, but I can't wish you good luck this weekend, but I will say that I know you guys will give it all you have. See yall Saturday in Silsbee. I'm a little bias! I love my Junior Hawk team. They have exceeded every one of our expectations. I just know that they will not quit. They proved it this weekend, when it would have been easier to fold it up. Hats off to East Chambers, anyone who still thinks they didn't deserve a #2 seed is flat wrong. They hung it all out and were very impressive. HOOKEM HAWKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wednesday, February 28, 2007 By Brice Cherry Tribune-Herald youth sports editor COLLEGE STATION — It’s roughly a 2 1/2-hour drive from Waco to Huntsville. For the Connally Cadets, that trip just got a whole lot shorter. Connally punched its ticket to the regional tournament in Huntsville by fending off Crockett, 48-45, in the Class 3A Region III boys’ basketball quarterfinals here Tuesday night at A&M Consolidated’s Tiger Gym. With the win, the Cadets (30-4) move on to face Hardin-Jefferson in the regional semifinals Friday at Sam Houston State University. “All season long, our goal has been to get to Huntsville,†Connally coach Quinton Snell said. “If we could just get to Huntsville, then we’d let the chips fall where they may. I’m just so proud of these guys, I don’t know what to say. I’m elated.†Late in the fourth quarter against Crockett (23-10), Snell loudly implored his team to “be smart with the basketball!†The Cadets listened. Connally played with savvy wisdom throughout the game but especially in the final 90 seconds. Connally broke a 45-all tie with 1:20 left when senior guard Henry Golightly drew a foul driving to the hoop and connected on one of his two free throws. After a time-out, Crockett tried to set up a play for a go-ahead score, but Connally’s Nate Ward skied high to pick off a Bulldog pass. The Cadets played keep-away with the ball until Crockett finally managed to foul sophomore post D’Andre Simmons with 25.2 seconds left. Simmons hit one of his two free throws to put the Cadets up 47-45, and, on the ensuing trip down, Crockett’s long-range sniper Cannon Earp came up short on a forced three-point attempt from the corner. Connally’s Chris Cobb tracked down the long rebound and drew a foul with 3.9 seconds showing, and the Cadets were on their way to Huntsville. “This feels real good,†Ward said. “We’ve been trying to get to this point since my sophomore year, and to finally get here is pretty sweet.†Connally fell behind by a 15-8 score early in the second quarter after Earp picked up a loose ball and drained a trey from the top of the key. But the Cadets didn’t allow Earp to get off, shadowing the shooter on every Crockett possession, and often sending a second defender over to harrass him. Connally got back in the game thanks to its bench, specifically junior forward Rafael Walker. Walker entered the game in the second quarter and immediately scored on a follow shot and a three-pointer from the corner on his way to a team-high 13 points. “Rafael Walker really hit some big shots,†Snell said. “He’s got a nice stroke, and I’m proud of the way he came in and delivered.†Crockett took a 23-22 lead into the halftime break after Tracy Cooper knocked down a 15-foot jumper at the buzzer. At the end of the third quarter, however, it was Connally’s turn to play “Beat the Clock,†as Golightly made a falling-out-of-bounds scoop pass to Walker, who connected for a three-pointer as the buzzer sounded, putting the Cadets up, 37-36. Down the stretch, Connally made all the big plays, despite suiting up only nine players. “We played smart and did what we had to do,†Snell said. “That’s what this team has done all season long. Whenever we’ve faced any kind of adversity, we’ve pulled together. We had a lot of guys really step up big.†That included Simmons, who despite being saddled with four fouls for much of the second half finished with eight rebounds and eight blocked shots. “That’s something I like to do is try to block shots,†Simmons said. “I try to be a presence back there.†“D’Andre’s a great one, and he’s just a sophomore,†Snell said. “He may help me keep my job a couple more years.†Ward chipped in nine points, 11 rebounds and two steals for Connally, while Golightly picked up eight points. For Crockett, Michael Collins tallied 15 points and Earp hit for nine. Adding a bit of intrigue to the Connally-Crockett matchup was several Central Texas connections on the Crockett end. Crockett’s athletic director is Steve Burrow, a Connally graduate and formerly the athletic director and head football coach for the Cadets. But for the Cadets, it didn’t matter who was standing on the sidelines after the game, as they were mugged at center court by adoring fans, friends and relatives. They were just glad to have at least one more road trip. “This feels so good, I don’t even know what to say,†Simmons said. “I’m just really happy.â€

West Hardin players and coaches, here is a little scouting report. Hope it helps! Cayuga uses speed in playoff win The Palestine Herald By SCOTT TYLER H-P Sports Editor TYLER — All weekend, all Cayuga head coach Greg Jenkins heard about was the speed of Beckville. Tuesday night, the Wildcats proved they have speed of their own. Cayuga raced up and down the court all night Tuesday in a 76-57 Class A-Region III, Division I quarterfinal win over Beckville at the Herrington Patriot Center on the campus of the University of Texas at Tyler. “All I have been hearing about is Beckville can run, Beckville can do this, Beckville can do that,†Jenkins said. “No one wants to give us credit but tonight we reached out and grabbed that credit.†Cayuga (23-9) will play West Hardin in the Class A-Region III semifinals at 10 a.m. Friday at Stephen F. Austin University’s Johnson Coliseum in Nacogdoches. West Hardin defeated Broaddus 41-33 Tuesday night. “We reached one of our goals we set at the beginning of the season,†Jenkins said of getting to the regional tournament. Cayuga reached the goal Tuesday night by using an aggressive defense and then running whenever the Wildcats got the ball. “Defensive intensity is what we do and tonight we did it at its best,†Jenkins said. “We put pressure on their guards and were able to frustrate them.†Cayuga had 10 players score Tuesday night, led by senior Sam Downe’s 22 points as he made a trio of three pointers. “Sam stepped it up tonight in front of a big crowd, in a big game,†Jenkins said. “Sam has never seen a shot he does not like and he always has the green light.†Cayuga used a 9-0 run in the first quarter to take the lead. The scoring spree was started with defense as Carlton Lester, who finished with 13 points, had a steal and made a 5-foot jumper. Malcome Kennedy followed with a steal and got the ball to Darnell Walker who was fouled as he made a layup in transition. Walker would complete the three-point play with the free throw and Cayuga led, 16-9. Cayuga took its first double-digit lead, 21-11, in the opening seconds of the second quarter when Traylon Shead made a jumper from the free-throw line. The Wildcats kept the lead around 10 points for most of the quarter before the Cayuga head coach challenged the team during a timeout with less than two minutes left. “During the timeout, I challenged them to be up by 15 at halftime,†Jenkins said. “I did not want us to get into a lull against Beckville to end the half.†The Wildcats met the challenge, scoring seven points in the final minute, started by a Downe three-pointer. Then Billy Duncan had a layup and Shead had a putback both off of Cayuga’s transition game and the Wildcats opened up a 16-point (43-27) halftime lead. Cayuga started the third quarter where it left off, scoring the first six points on a Lester layup, Kennedy putback and Shead layup, all off of transition plays. Shead’s basket would complete a 13-0 run starting back in the second quarter and Cayuga led, 49-27. During the middle of the third quarter, Beckville kept the deficit near 20 points, prompting Jenkins to pull all five of his starters off the court for five bench players. “We started the third with good intensity but then we had a lapse,†the Cayuga head coach said. “I have five guys beside me who were begging for playing time and they got in there and got the pace going and the intensity back up.†A pair of baskets by Chris Wilson and a 5-foot jumper from Forrest Prophette increased the lead to 59-37 at the end of the third quarter and the Wildcats never looked back.

That BIG FRESHMAN center (for Navasota) is going to be a force for years to come.

Have not seen a lot of the other players from this area play but I will say that I have seen a lot of players come out of HJ and Ryan is (in my opinion) the cream of the crop!

I don't know how to predict a game like this because of the distance between the two districts. Waco Connlly isn't ranked that I can see and they finished third in district 17. Who knows what that means. I do know that if HJ comes out like they did against Navasota its going to take more than an "athletic" team to stop them. All I hope is that the Refs give us a chance. The last two games that I personaly witnessed were unbelievable. There is NO DOUBT that they (the refs) were doing everything to keep Navasota in that game last night.
