  1. I appreciate everyone's opinions on here, and I want to thank the guys that make this site possible, and a big shout out to Mike Sanchez for coming on my show on Friday night. Now, as for my "agenda", or whatever some of you want to refer to it as, I'm not quite sure what that is, and if you know what my "agenda" is, please, let me know. Now, I'll tell you what I do know. I covered W-OS in 2007 as a reporter for the Enterprise, and I've followed the Mustangs on and off since. I've covered high school football since 2005 in four different states - Texas, Ohio, Missouri and Kansas. I know how passionate the fans are here, and West Orange Stark's tradition is as good a tradition as I've ever seen. I admire and respect that. I have absolutely no ill will towards Coach Thompson, never spoken to the man, and from all accounts, I've heard he's a fine man and a fine football coach. I've also had the opportunity to speak with Coach Foreman, and from all accounts, I've also heard he's a fine man and a fine football coach. Not to mention he's a helluva track coach to boot. That said, IN my OPINION, and let me say again, my OPINION, and that's what these message boards are all about right? Airing and expressing our OPINIONS? I feel that Coach Foreman would have been the BEST man for the JOB. Plain and simple. That is not a slight on Coach Thompson in any way shape or form. Granted, it was one game, and perhaps I'm jumping the gun. But I also know that I saw a very average offense that has playmakers - and if I'm wrong, please let me know - basically go on cruise control instead of putting the game away, the defense was on the field an awful lot in that second half and it showed in the fourth quarter. Granted the secondary blew some assignments, but I digress. W-OS should've won that game. For all the Coach Thompson supporters, I'm not against Coach T. And if the Mustangs turn around and win lots of games from here on out, and Coach T proves to be a great coach and the dominance at W-OS continues, then I'll have no problem saying I was wrong and my hats off to Coach T. But in the meantime, please don't tell me or others what my "agenda" is or that I'm "bashing" Coach Thompson simply because I don't think he was the right hire. Because truth be known, if he does prove to be the "right" hire, everyone on this board will let me know it, and I'm fine with it. But if he doesn't, and W-OS struggles, and in a year or two when the Mustangs are looking for another coach and wishing they hadn't let Coach Foreman get away, I'll probably be able to count on one finger the number of people that say I was right. But for the Mustangs sake, let's hope I'm not. Thanks again, I appreciate and enjoy the discussion, and tune in every Friday from 6-7 pm for Sports Talk with Fred Davis on 1300 AM here in Beaumont. Spirited discussion is always welcome. Enjoy your weekends.
  2. A couple things from last night's game... First, hats off to Nederland for not quitting. Down 20-7 and after a dismal third quarter, the Bulldogs kept coming at W-OS, and did a great job of getting the ball back with 3:30 left to go in the ballgame. And what a ballsy call to go for the 2-pter and the win versus settling for the tie and overtime. So kudos to Coach Neumann for the testicular fortitude and his players for converting. Now.... While I was there as strictly as fan of high school football with no rooting interest in either side, the call that set the ball up inside the 10, and forgive me, because  I don't have the kid's name in front of me - but the long pass play that set the Bulldogs up - the kid was out of bounds by at least a foot - if not more. I'm not entirely sure how in the hell the ref missed that call, but it was atrocious. Granted, The Stangs should've stopped Nederland a couple plays before when they had the FB wrapped up at the line of scrimmage on third and three, but instead he breaks through some arm tackles and rumbles 20 yards to keep the momentum and the drive alive. Great play by Nederland. But to rule that pass play in-bounds was inexcusable. As for West Orange Stark - I don't know Cornel Thompson, and I'm sure he's a nice man, but the Mustangs made the wrong hire. While the officiating in last night's game was questionable, the playcalling and enthusiasm from the W-OS sideline was almost as appalling. That offense is about as vanilla as you're gonna get, and if it weren't for pure athleticism from the Mustang side, this game would've been decided much earlier. The Mustangs had a coach on staff - Toby Foreman - a young, vibrant, innovative guy who has a proven track record of success who in my estimation would've brought a state title back to Orange, and created another era of excellence and state titles, but they choose a longtime assistant instead. Bad move. That's what I took away from last night's game. Sure, Nederland pulled it out, but W-OS and its football program is the real loser because they let the best coach for that program walk and its going to cost them big time.
