Arkansas state was independent in football (Amer South Conference) the same time Lamar was.  They had a full page article on their plan to go Div1a in their program guide in 1988 when we played them there.  Other than going independent  and trying to put together a tougher schedule, LU was busy promoting cutting its feet off.  That being said, A state had a rough transition years that I'm not sure bmt fans would withstand.
