  1. SP 68 HD 41  All SP starters were taken out of the game in the fourth to get ready for Evadale/Spurger game.  Some JV players played the entire fourth quarter.
  2. If Evadale played B-1 defense and shut Blankenship down (from the arc by getting in his face), Evadale by 4 because of home field advantage.  Evadale has two big men who should be able to handle #12 of Spurger.  Evadale has the personnel to match-up with Spurger.  If they pressed, Spurger will run away with a win.  GO BLUE!!!
  3. Having fun at Mardi Gras downtown Port Arthur.  Very cold!  Friend of mine said SP 71 HI 37.  Bench played second quarter and JV played fourth quarter.  Must not be a very exciting game.
  4. A blow out unless coach Harvey puts a lid on his starters.  Bench players should get a lot of playing time.  SP has been playing very well as a team as of late.  Get ready for playoffs, boys.  You will need all your players for playoffs.  In fact, I would bench all starters except the post in the second half to see how they respond to adversity or pressure.  Forget individual stats.  You can have the individual stats all you want, but no body will remember you if you don't make it to the big dance.
  5. Congrats to SP on its win against Evadale.  Both teams were trading leads in the first quarter until SP stopped the press and pulled away.  SP led as many as 17 points at one point, but Evadale created some critical turnovers and cut the lead to 8.  SP managed to break the press late in the fourth quarter and scored some easy buckets.  SP did a great job shutting No. 3 down of Evadale as they did to No. 34 of Spurger.  Can't wait to see Spurger and Evadale game.  GO EVADALE!!!!
  6. Not so fast, Apiolar!  If SP used the same game plan as it did against Evadale a few weeks ago, that would play right into the hands of Evadale.  SP pressed almost the whole game and got tired, which led to at least 7 easy layups for Evadale = 14 points.  If SP played like as it did against Spurger, Evadale would not have a chance.  Evadale will try to slow SP down with its press, watch out!!!!!  Looking forward to seeing Spurger against Evadale in 10 days.
  7. SP - 60 WH - 38 Game was over in the first quarter.  Bench players played all four quarters.  I must say the game was extremely boring.  Coach Harvey was very classy; he chose not run up ....
  8. Courtside, I was simply responding to sport talk's post.  Spurger is definitely a contender to win the district.  When I said "pretender" in my previous post, I was referring to the teams that are not in the upper echelon in District 25-A.  I have read many of your posts, and you seem to be extremely knowledgeable of the game, so there is no need for me to be explicit as to which (3) teams are in the upper echelon in District 25-A.  As you know, SP is scheduled to play WH next, which is a sandwich game for them because they just played Spurger and Evadale is on deck.  If SP players do not handle the victory against Spurger well and start prematurely thinking about Evadale, they could set themselves up for an upset against WH (a pretender with a lot of potential in the next few years, but not this season).  I hope that will clear everything up.
  9. SP, Your next game against WH at their house is a sandwich game.  Enjoy your victory against Spurger tonight and forget it tomorrow.  Back to the gym and don't think about Evadale.  Remember, WH ruined your season last year when they beat your team at their house (I was there), and ultimately denied your team a share of district title.  I went to your game tonight with a friend/co-worker of mine and he said that SP has played well since their loss to Evadale.  Based on what I saw tonight, guys played as a team for the most part.  The chemistry was definitely there.  Hope to see you against Evadale.  I was wrong about you guys when I picked SP to go 6 - 4 a few weeks ago.  My friend asked me to post my assessment of the game so I agreed since he paid for my ticket.  No. 30 and No. 25 were great both inside and outside.  No. 21 and No. 23 were good from the arc.  No. 3 played good defense and created some turnovers for SP, but ran out of gas towards the end of the game.  It was a good coaching job by Coach Harvey, he made an adjustment in the second quarter, which slowed down Spurger's temple of the game.  However, hee needs to rotate the players more to give his starters some rest.  Coach Issac kept rotating his players; I thought that was excellent although Spurger suffered its first loss of the season.
  10. Sabine Pass    58 Spurger          47 It was a good game.  SP had a perfect game plan to shut #34 down.
  11. Spurger can be beaten, let downs or not.  Let downs are likely to occur when your opponent is a pretender.  Evadale and SP are in the mix for playoffs, so Spurger better not takes SP lightly tonight.  This is not a sandwich game.
  12. A friend of mine told me that SP has yet to lose at home since they started playing at Nederland's old gym.  Congrats Spurger for being undefeated in the district so far.  The game against Evadale was very exciting in the first half, but Spurger pulled away in the second half.  I think this will be a good game.
  13. It was a good game.  Congrats Coach Wilkins and the Rebels.  I think SP, as a whole, is more talented; however, SP was outcoached and outplayed tonight.  The rebels, clearly, played as a team.  Coach Wilkins continued rotating his players throughout the game to keep their legs fresh for the press.  If you are going to press, you need fresh legs.  And that was what Coach Wilkins did.  I did not see SP play as a team.  No. 25 and No. 30 seemed like one team, and the rest of other players was like another team without any kind of chemistry.  It seems like there were two SP teams against a "holistic" team from Evadale.  Another point about SP is that when they were up by 12 in the first quarter, the players should have been rotated in and out to keep their legs fresh if the plan were to press the whole game.  I was impressed with HC Wilkins.  Even when they were down by 12 in the middle of the first quarter, he did not seem to panic, which is a good trait to have because that is what leadership is all about.  SP started out fast but could not maintain its intensity because they did not have fresh legs.  As previously projected, Spurger, Evadale and SP will finish first, second and third in their district, respectively.  Coach Issac and Wilkins in my opinion are likely to coach elsewhere soon.
  14. I totally concur with you on this issue.  In fact, I was at the Spurger-Sabine Pass game last Friday.  I could not believe what I was hearing.  One fan from Spurger called a fan from SP, using the "N" word.  This is not a reflection on Spurger's community as a whole.  However, there is no place for such a behavior.  It is beyond reprehensible and it is not something that we want kids to emulate.  The fan from SP that the young oiler was referring to, in my opinion, should be banned from future sporting events.  I hope the school does smoething about it.
