Johnson adds driver of the year to awards haulAssociated Press

NEW YORK -- NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson added another honor to his watershed 2006 season, winning the voting for Driver of the Year.

Johnson, whose run to his first Nextel Cup title included victories in the Daytona 500 and the Brickyard 400, as well as a stirring comeback after stumbling at the beginning of the 10-race Chase for the championship, was a runaway winner of the latest honor.

Johnson received 11 of 17 first-place votes from a national panel of sports writers and broadcasters.

Kevin Harvick, the NASCAR Busch Series champion who also finished fourth in the Cup standings, received two votes, while three-time Champ Car World Series champion Sebastien Bourdais, IRL IndyCar Series champion and Indianapolis 500 winner Sam Hornish, Jr., World of Outlaws champion Donny Schatz and NHRA Top Fuel champion Tony Schumacher each got one first-place vote.

"I think that puts the finishing touch on a championship season," owner Rick Hendrick said. "To be voted Driver of the Year, that's the supreme deal, I think every driver out there wants to win that."

In its 40th year, the Driver of the Year title is unique because it is the only award that encompasses all of the racing series in the United States.
