Muddy, happy Titans stun ’em 7-6

To celebrate the magnitude of their school’s first-ever football win against a state-ranked team, Memorial’s jubilant Titans decided to wallow in the mud.

It had to feel marvelous for Memorial’s players to roll around in Memorial Stadium’s green and brown soup one last heroic time because they had sloshed in it for the better part of 2 1/2 hours.

Bulldogs prove good mudders, enroute to 36-14 victory

NEDERLAND — The Nederland Bulldogs shrugged off a disappointing three weeks of football on Friday night by leveling the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Battlin’ Bears 36-14 in a mud-splattered District 20-4A game.

The Dogs rolled up 356 total yards of offense and had a very impressive night from Grant Lovelady, who pounded away for 170 yards on 21 carries. Lovelady, who also had an 18-yard reception, trumped LC-M’s entire offense with an 188-180 difference

Fumble return helps Jags top Raiders

BEAUMONT – With Mother Nature providing a steady stream of rain that started just after noon and continued long after the game ended, field conditions were less than ideal.

That put a premium on maintaining possession of the football and limiting turnovers. Central won that battle and the game as the Jaguars held on for a 14-7, District 20-4A win Friday night over visiting Lumberton at Zaharias Stadium

Vidor outlasts Ozen, 21-7

VIDOR — With only 17 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, the Ozen Panthers tried for one last ditch effort to save face against a scrappy Pirate defense in Friday’s mud-soaked slugfest.

But Vidor senior linebacker James Laramore made sure that wouldn’t happen, intercepting Ozen’s Charles Durio on the Panther’s 29 yard line and sealing the 21-7 victory for the Pirates

BRIDGE CITY — For the brave Bridge City fans that fought off the elements Friday night at Larry Ward Stadium, they will remember “The Drive†and the “Exclamation Point†that their Cardinals put on the Hardin-Jefferson Hawks to open District 21-3A play.

Backed down at their own 4 and trailing 10-6 with 8:48 remaining, the Cardinals executed a superb seven-play, 96-yard touchdown drive behind the efforts of quarterback Josh Lemoine and tailback Matt Menard as Menard capped it with a two-yard plunge off right tackle and Lemoine hit receiver Luke Rhodes on a two-point conversion pass to make it a 14-10 lead with 4:53 left

Silsbee ends WO-S streak at 29, 13-7

SILSBEE — The streak is over.

The West Orange-Stark Mustangs were taken down for the first time in 29 district games since dropping down to the 3A ranks in 2004 Friday night by the Silsbee Tigers, 13-7.

The game was never pretty as heavy rain poured on Tiger Stadium and offensive numbers were hard to come by.

The Mustangs (4-2, 0-1) could only muster 65 yards of total.

Kountze outlasts Pirates in 23-2A play

DEWEYVILLE — The Deweyville Pirates watched an 8-6 halftime lead evaporate on their Homecoming when the Kountze ran back the second half kickoff back for a touchdown as the Lions went on to secure a 20-8 District 23-2A victory at Pirate Stadium Friday night.

The Pirates (1-6, 0-3) went up in the first half when senior tailback Keeton Addison cashed in on a touchdown gallo.

Cooper, West Brook crush Channelview 35-0

Few could keep their footing on the sloppy field at Alex Durley Stadium on Friday, but West Brook senior running back Jeremy Cooper parlayed a preseason drill into silky smooth rushing, gaining 115 yards and scoring four touchdowns on just 13 carries.

His productive night helped snap the Bruins' three-game losing streak, propelling them to a 35-0 win over Channelview in a District 21-5A opener.
