Lamar to Make Big Scholarship Funding Announcement Soon

Not sports related but very good news indeed from KBMT:

Lamar officials are keeping tight lipped about an upcoming announcement but say the university is about to receive it's largest corporate gift to fund scholarships in Lamar's history.

Lamar says it will make the announcement Monday, August 31. They will also let us know how it will benefit students in Southeast Texas.

Any ideas on the amount and who's giving it?

Sheila and Walter Umphrey gave $5 million to LU for the rec center in 2005.

In 2007 Phil Drayer gave $5 million to the engineering department.

This year Dan F. Smith and his wife gave $6 million, $5 million for the engineering department, $1 million for football.

These were from individuals, not corporations, and for more than just scholarships.  The Walter Umphrey law firm gave $3 million for football, and there's been a few other $1 million donations just for scholarships.

It was just announced that Valero gave $1 million to LU for engineering scholarships.
