Nederland sets playoff, Titans to rest

The Port Arthur News

The District 21-5A co-champion Memorial Titans and North Shore Mustangs resolved their tiebreaker diplomatically on Wednesday, while the Nederland Bulldogs and Livingston Lions will handle things the old fashion way by knocking heads on Friday night at the Carl Parker Multipurpose Center in Port Arthur to break their second-place tie in District 20-4A.

Memorial head coach Terrul Henderson said athletic director Andre Boutte met with North Shore's administration Wednesday morning to discuss how the tiebreaker would be broken. In that process, North Shore basically conceded the No. 1 seed to the Titans, which ended the regular season at 24-7 overall and 9-1 in league play.

Up next for Memorial will be practice and film study, as it waits to meet the winner of Doby and Pearland. Memorial will play its first round game on Monday or Tuesday. The date, time and place should be settled Friday night or sometime Saturday morning.

Meanwhile, Nederland and Livingston will square off Friday night to break their second place tie. The teams each won at the other’s place this season to leave them in a 1-1 split. Now they will meet in Port Arthur.

Nederland is in the midst of a six-game winning streak and has emerged from tie for fourth place to a potential two seed in the Class 4A playoffs.

Win or lose on Friday, Nederland is in the playoffs for the first time since 1993, and its first round game will come against C.E. King or North Forrest. That should all be determined sometime after Friday night's contest or early Saturday.

The Bulldogs are 22-11 overall and 10-4 in league play and are coming off an 82-37 route over Lumberton on Tuesday. Livingston is 22-9 overall and 10-4 in district.

The teams’ district records will not change based on Friday's game, just their seeding.

Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. and tickets will be $4 for adults and $3 for students.

Fans coming in from Mid-County are encouraged to take the following special directions because streets will be blocked by Mardi Gras events.

Stay on Hwy. 69, which will become Memorial Boulevard. Take a right at Gulfway Drive toward Houston Avenue where you will take a left. Follow Houston Avenue until you get to Fourth Street where you will take another left. Fourth Street will lead you to the Carl Parker Center, which will be on the right.
