For the better part of the first quarter, the Barbers Hill boys’ basketball team looked like it was on siesta. Once they woke up, it was all over for Northeast Christian.

The Eagles overcame an early deficit and handled Northeast in a 48-36 win in the third week of action in the Lee College Summer Basketball League. Barbers Hill outscored the Warriors 14-7 in the second quarter and cruised to the win thanks to its defense and outside shooting.

Chris Patareau had the hot hand early for Northeast with five points as it jumped out to a 9-2 lead. The Eagles had an answer in Daniel Mitchell who scored five of his own and helped draw his team to within 11-7 at the end of the first quarter.

Barbers Hill turned up the pressure with its man-to-man defense and pulled even then ahead of Northeast. Mitchell added six to his tally with Robby Bragg and Richard Minnick each adding 3-pointers to help give the Eagles a 21-18 lead into the half.

Momentum proved to be a kind friend for Barbers Hill as it began to put the game away in the third quarter. Ian Hamlin, who had been out with an injury during the first two weeks of league play, drilled a three to help boost the Eagles to a 32-25 lead.

George Foreman had several opportunities to keep Northeast in the game, but could not finish off near the basket and struggled with his free throw shooting. His defense and rebounding were a benefit to the Warriors as they closed to 30-25 on a Max Robinson basket. Mitchell answered with a lay-up to make it a seven-point game entering the final frame.

Minnick stepped up for Barbers Hill in the final quarter with a couple of 3-pointers as the lead went out to double digits and ended in a 12-point win.

Mitchell paced the Eagles with 15 points with Minnick and Bragg each scoring nine. Patareau led the Warriors with 13 points and Robinson scored nine.

In next week’s action, Northeast will open against Crosby at 5:30 p.m. Barbers Hill will take on Goose Creek Memorial at 6:30 p.m. and Sterling blue will take on Liberty at 7:30 p.m. Sterling white and Lee will face off in that nightcap at 8:30 p.m.
