After a year of practicing against one another and playing a junior varsity schedule, the Kingwood Park Panthers are ready to step into the limelight.

The Panthers, who are about to enter their second year of existence, will play their first-ever varsity football game against Sterling High School on Aug. 29 at Turner Stadium.

Kingwood Park played a junior varsity football schedule in 2007. It was the only sport at the school that didn't compete at the varsity level.

"I think we have got a lot accomplished up to this point," said Kingwood Park football coach Jim Holley. "It was really a benefit to us to get to have spring practice this year.

"We have had a few bumps in the road. But, overall, we are really excited about it. We are really looking forward to our first season in 4A."

Kingwood Park will enter Class 4A with only juniors, sophomores and freshmen.

"One good thing is that we will have everybody back (from last year's team)," Holley said. "Sometimes, you would like to see the younger kids wait around one more year. But this situation presented itself to us. I think the kids will do a fantastic job."

Kingwood Park's football team, along with the other sports at the 4A school, will compete in a district with Dayton, Barbers Hill, C.E. King, Crosby, Baytown Memorial, Galena Park and North Forest.

"Our kids did very well in the other sports (in District 22-3A) in our first year," Holley said. "They are going to have high expectations, but in football, it is going to be a growing process. It is not going to happen overnight.

"Last year, we tried to step up the competition by playing some 5A JV teams. We played some good, quality teams. Hopefully, that will help us out (this year)."

Kingwood Park will open fall practice on Aug. 11. It will scrimmage Willis on Aug. 22 before hosting Sterling on Aug. 29. The Panthers also will host Magnolia West on Sept. 5 before concluding non-district against Montgomery.

"Montgomery competed against a couple of District 19-4A teams last year and did very well," Holley said. "That game will be a good tool to see where we are.

"We still have a lot of questions to answer. We have to make some progress (in the weight room and 7-on-7) over the summer."

Junior Gavin Whitelaw will be the Panthers' starting quarterback.

"We look for good things from him," Holley said. "We have had some other kids step up, too. But we don't know anything for sure. We haven't closed the door on anything. We are still evaluating kids. We want to see how they come back in the fall."

Junior safety Austin Salter should spearhead the defense.

"He should play some great football for us," Holley said.

Holley said District 19-4A should be very competitive.

"You have to put Dayton at the top," he said. "C.E. King and Crosby have a lot of tradition in the district and Barbers Hill has had some successful years in the past.

"Baytown Memorial should be just like us. We have a little joke between us about playing in a lot of homecoming games this year. I might get asked to be an honorary judge. That is OK. It is going to take some time to build a new program."

Kingwood Park is playing in a 7-on-7 passing league from 6-8 p.m. on Mondays in June. The other teams in the league include Humble, Kingwood and Atascocita.

"That should be good for us," Holley said. "I think the kids will have to adjust to the speed and things we see."

Holley said his team also will spend a lot of time in the weight room this summer.

"We have to be dedicated to the weight room," Holley said. "We want the kids to be a lot stronger. We still have a long way to go in that area."

Atascocita has over forty five hundred in their school and two years old. Problem with many districts is that they float the bonds but do not have the money to operate the new schools. HISD is like thirteen million dollars in the hole and may have to pass a bond to keep the doors open. Thanks Gov Perry and your one dollar fifty cap.  ???

That new school should help unload East Humble High.  It's still a buyer's market as long as new homes go and don't look like they're slowing down any along the Beltway

This will be true in 2010 when we actually have 4 class and about 1600 kids.  K-Park will have about 1200 kids this year.  Last year K-Park competed in 22-3a playing a varsity schedule in everything except football and soccer (soccer competed in 4a) with just 2 classes, about 700 kids.  K-Park made the playoffs in every sport, boys and girls except softball.  Football is going to be interesting this year with Kingwoods history in football but I think we are going to surprise some folks.  It's almost here!
