UAB whips Rice in tourney opener

NEW ORLEANS — Fifth-ranked Rice spent the better part of the past two months trying to erase the memory of its sluggish start to the Conference USA schedule.

It took one blistering afternoon for those nightmare images to come flooding back for the Owls.

Rice, the top seed in the C-USA tournament, was outplayed and embarrassed by eighth-seeded UAB, falling 8-2 in the opening round Wednesday at Turchin Stadium.

The Blazers (25-32) snapped the Owls’ 10-game winning streak and handed Rice (42-12) its worst loss since a 9-1 setback to Texas on March 11.

UAB scored four runs over three innings off Rice starter Matt Langwell (5-1), and continued to add runs against the bullpen.

UAB starter Kyle Roberson (6-6), fresh off a strong start of seven shutout innings against Southern Miss last Friday, pitched into the ninth inning before giving way to Billy Lichtner.

The Owls will face No. 5 seed East Carolina in an elimination game at 9 a.m. Thursday.
