Nederland squads cruise to Bobcat Relay team wins

ORANGEFIELD — It was a Mid-County kind of day at the 34th running of the Orangefield Bobcat Relays Friday afternoon.

The Nederland boys and girls combined for 410 points to win their respective divisions while Port Neches-Groves took top honors as well with the high-point boy and girl.

The Lady Bulldogs amassed 240 points, easily outdistancing second-place PN-G (148) while the Bulldog boys piled up 170 points to outlast their county rivals in PN-G, which finished with 148.

PN-G’s Matt Johnson was high-point boy after he won the long jump (23-0 1/2), the triple jump (46-6) and the 110-meter hurdles (15.92) and just missed a fourth gold when he was leading the 300-meter hurdles and fell down going over the next-to-last hurdle. Lady Indian Hayley English took top female honors by placing first in the long jump (16-5 1/2) and the 200 meters (27.61).

Little Cypress-Mauriceville senior David Sicktich was a double-winner in both the discus and shot put as he prepares for the upcoming District 22-4A Track & Field Championships, which will be held at Dayton High School.

Sicktich tossed the discus 140 feet, 9 1⁄2 inches to win that event and then easily won the shot put with a heave of 48-7 1⁄2. Sicktich’s teammate Kendrex Salter was golden in the 200 meters, winning with a clocking of 23.21.

Orangefield's Derrick Evans claimed first-place in the high jump with a 6 foot effort and Bobcat Kyle Fontenot won the pole vault with an effort of 11-6.

Nederland’s Justin Krautz was also a double-winner as the Bulldog nabbed first in both the 400 meters (49.72) and the 800 meters (2:10.66).

Lady Bobcat Laura Riddick captured the high jump with a leap of 4-10 and turned herself into a double-winner by claiming the 100-meter hurdles in 17.74 seconds.

Lady Bulldog Ashley Washburn won both the middle distance races, taking the 400 meters (1:04.23) and the 800 meters (2:40.07).

I believe that is the event he fell in on the next to last hurdle. He was leading at the time and appeared OK after the race.
