Gabriel Pruett

The Orange Leader

BRIDGE CITY — It was all right there for the taking Tuesday night for the Bridge City Cardinals yet it was the Jasper Bulldogs who seized victory.

The Cardinals opened a 10 point lead midway through the third period only to see the Bulldogs walk away with an exciting 64-61 District 21-3A win.

Bridge City (5-8, 0-1) had a shot with just seconds left on the clock after Jasper’s (0-1) Dominique Bailey missed two free throws.

A three point attempt was no good and Jasper was able to run out the clock.

Bailey ended the night with a game-high 28 points.

Bridge City’s Adam Sanchez had a monster first half with 18 points yet did not score in the second half until there was 1:30 left in the game.

Sanchez would finished the night with 26 points, six blocks and eight rebounds.

After being up 31-25 at the break, Bridge City then took a 39-29 lead with 4:33 left in the third period.

Jasper was then able to go on a 12-5 run to finish off the third as the Cardinals held a slim three point advantage at 44-41 heading into the fourth.

Jasper would take its first lead since the game was at 2-0 with 6:40 left in the game as Bailey got hot from the outside, nailing down two three points to start the fourth.

Bridge City’s Jason Clark, who finished with seven points and five rebounds, scored the Cardinals first points of the fourth with 4:10 remaining in the game off a jumper.

The Bulldogs started the fourth on a 10-2 run and led 51-46.

The Cardinals started the game off hot on a 10-2 run as the Bulldogs looked out of sync.

Jasper then went on a 8-0 run to tie the game up at 10 yet it was Bridge City who led 14-10 after the first period.

Sanchez scored 10 of the Cardinals’ 14 points in the quarter, many by attacking inside the paint.

The Cardinals were then able to outscore the Bulldogs 17-15 in the second period as Sanchez added eight more points and Jaden Dillon struck for five points.

Bridge City did a nice job keeping Bailey at bay in the first half as the sophomore only carried nine points in the break.

After having such a strong first half, 13 of the Cardinals 21 turnovers came in the second half. Bridge City forced Jasper into turning the ball over 16 times in the game.

Dillon finished with seven points for the Cardinals and Cory Smith added 10 points and eight rebounds.

Jasper’s Roderick Kyles had 12 points and Dejaniero Jackson had a game-high 11 rebounds.

Bridge City returns to action this Friday when the Cardinals travel to face rival Orangefield.

Jasper wins 64-61..BC miss a 3 pointer at the buzzer.

IF I remember correctly, and without looking up stats - BC was 2 for about 15 for 3-pointers - MUCh worse than I had seen them do earlier in the year.  If they just hit 33%, it's a different game!  And MOST of those shots were uncontested, so it's not like Jasper's "D" was pressuring them to miss.......... :-\
