Kelly, Franklin pace BC CC teams to win

PLEASURE ISLAND — The Bridge City cross country team carried on with their momentum Saturday by rolling to both team titles and both individual wins at the Pleasure Island Cross Country Meet.

Leading the way for the Cardinal boys was senior Ryan Kelly, who navigated the hilly three-mile course in 17 minutes, 21 seconds.

He was followed by teammates Tim Cude (third, 18:15), Kirby Sheppard (fourth, 18:54), Brandon Simoneaux (sixth, 19:16), Sawyer Hogan (eighth, 19:52), Armando Chavez (11th, 20:11) and Josh Blakeney (12th, 20:27).

The Lady Cardinals were paced by freshman Jessica Franklin, who captured her first-ever varsity title. Franklin covered the two-mile course in 14:21. She was followed closely by teammates Mary Nguyen (third, 14:24), Shae Garriga (fourth, 15:05); Ariel Chesson (sixth, 15:14), Melissa Pittman (seventh, 15:17), Lisa Huynh (10th, 15:58) and Sarah Fontenot (15th, 17:24).

“The Pleasure Island course is always tough,†said Cardinal head coach Cody Knight. “Last year when the course was set up, it kinda went around the hills. Today, I think every hill had to be covered. It was tough conditions but the kids were eager for the challenge.â€

The Deweyville boys team finished second behind Bridge City and the Lady Pirates were third behind Bridge City and Hamshire-Fannett.

Joe Dooley ran to a second-place finish for the Pirates, running an 18:06. He was followed by teammates Howard Stansbury (seventh, 19:45), Brady Williams (13th, 21:23), Caden Thompson (16th, 22:40), Ronnie Anglin (17th, 22:43), Michael Chalambaga (18th, 22:44) and Jacob Hopson (20th, 22:45) as all seven Pirates medaled.

Leading the way for the Lady Pirates was Amber Burks, who nabbed second-place with a time of 14:23. She was followed by teammates Marrissa Powell (12th, 16:35), Taylor Caswell (18th, 17:59), Margie Bergeron (19th, 18:07), Shyann Leatherwood (20th, 18:16) and Heather Beaudoin (21st, 19:41).

The Little Cypress-Mauriceville Lady Bears claimed fourth place in their division. Reanna Edgerton paced the Lady Bears with a fourth-place time of 13:43. She was followed by teammates Megan Isaacs (16th, 14:56), Leah Adkins (41st, 19:09), Casey Leber (43rd, 19:42) and Merideth Menard (50th, 22:30).

The Bridge City JV boys nabbed second place. Mark Virva led the way, placing fourth with a 20:25. He was followed by Hunter Stevens (sixth, 21:02), Matthew Wappler (11th, 21:52), Jacob Worthington (13th, 22:05), Aaron Hodges (18th, 22:54), and Bryan Godwin (30th, 25:36).

Leading the way for the LC-M JV boys was Justin Guller (seventh, 21:21), Chris Chapman (10th, 21:39), Andrew Longfron (20th, 23:29), Dyllon Sanford (24th, 23:57), James Pena (27th, 24:43) and Steven Istre (40th, 31:18).

For the LC-M JV girls Kaitlin White was 23rd with a 18:16 followed by Callie Farrell (26th, 18:51) and Meghan Welborn (43rd, 22:18).

Faith Rowe placed fourth for the Bridge City JV with a 16:22 while Kim Trtuong was 18th with a 17:40.
